Meeting Ashley Williams
Ashley Williams is one of the first human squadmates Commander Shepard encounters, and her introduction is a crucial part of establishing the Normandy SR-1's crew and the initial narrative thrust of Mass Effect. You will first meet Ashley during the mission on Eden Prime, where she is part of a Marine contingent attempting to secure the planet from the Geth incursion. She is initially presented as a staunch defender of humanity, often expressing skepticism towards alien races and a strong sense of duty.
During the Eden Prime mission, Ashley will be fighting alongside Shepard and the other squadmates. She is a capable soldier, proficient with assault rifles and shotguns, and her presence provides valuable combat support. As you progress through the mission, you'll have opportunities to interact with her and learn more about her background. She is fiercely loyal to her family and carries the burden of their expectations. Her dialogue often reflects her pragmatic and sometimes jaded outlook on the galaxy's political landscape, particularly her distrust of the Turians and other alien species.
Upon successfully completing the Eden Prime mission and returning to the Normandy, Ashley will officially join Shepard's crew. You can then recruit her for subsequent missions, and she will offer unique insights and commentary during your travels. Her personal quests often revolve around her family history and her struggles with her faith and her place in the galaxy. Building a good relationship with Ashley involves understanding her perspective, even when it clashes with your own. For instance, during conversations about the Prothean ruins or the nature of the Geth, her human-centric viewpoint can offer a contrasting perspective to other squadmates like Tali'Zorah. Her combat specialization makes her a valuable asset in direct firefights, especially against organic enemies where her Assault Rifle proficiency shines.
