A New Beginning
Having proven your basic survival skills and completed the initial tutorial quests, Uniegost, your uncle, will now task you with a monumental undertaking: establishing your own settlement and attracting people to live within it. The quest "A New Beginning" serves as your formal introduction to the core mechanics of building a thriving dynasty, specifically focusing on gaining Dynasty Reputation and the crucial process of recruiting villagers.
This quest is a significant milestone, transitioning you from a solitary survivor to the founder of a community. It lays the groundwork for all future expansion and resource management. Successfully completing it will not only advance the main story but also unlock vital gameplay loops.
Quest Objectives & Walkthrough
The primary objectives of "A New Beginning" are straightforward but require careful planning and execution:
- Build a House: Establish the first permanent residence for your future villagers.
- Gain Dynasty Reputation: Accumulate enough reputation points to meet the recruitment threshold.
- Recruit a Villager: Convince an NPC from another village to join your settlement.
Step 1: Building Your First House
Before you can attract anyone, they need a place to live! Your first task is to construct a simple house. This will be the foundational building for your burgeoning village.
- Required Building: Small Simple House (or any other house type you prefer, but the Small Simple House is the most resource-efficient early on).
- Location: Choose a strategic location for your village. Consider proximity to resources (wood, stone, water), fertile land for farming, and flat terrain for easier construction. Many players opt for areas near the river between Gostovia and Denica, or further west near Lesnica.
- Resources Needed (Small Simple House):
- Logs: 10
- Sticks: 10
- Stones: 10
- Straw: 10
- Construction Process:
- Open your building menu (default key: Q).
- Navigate to "Buildings" -> "Houses".
- Select "Small Simple House".
- Place the blueprint on a suitable, flat piece of land.
- Gather the required resources. You can chop down trees for Logs, pick up Sticks and Stones from the ground, and harvest Reeds (found near water) or use a Scythe on dry grass for Straw.
- Approach the blueprint and use your Hammer (default key: Q, then select Hammer) to construct each section. You'll see outlines indicating which material is needed for each part.
Tip: Don't build too far from your initial resource gathering spots. You'll be carrying a lot of materials!
Step 2: Gaining Dynasty Reputation
Dynasty Reputation is a crucial metric that reflects your standing in the valley. It determines how many villagers you can recruit and influences various interactions. For "A New Beginning," you need to gain a specific amount of reputation (usually around 50-100 Dynasty Reputation, check your quest log for the exact number).
Here are the most effective ways to gain Dynasty Reputation early in the game:
- Completing Quests: This is the primary and most reliable method.
- Main Story Quests: "A New Beginning" itself will grant reputation upon completion, but you need some to start recruiting.
- Side Quests (Exclamation Marks): Look for NPCs in villages with an exclamation mark above their heads. These are often simple fetch quests or delivery tasks that offer a good chunk of reputation. Prioritize these!
- Uniegost's Quests: Continue to check in with Uniegost in Gostovia; he often has follow-up quests that reward reputation.
- Crafting and Selling Items: While less efficient for raw reputation, selling crafted goods contributes indirectly by giving you money to buy resources for other reputation-gaining activities.
- Paying Taxes: Once you have a village and start generating income, paying your annual taxes on time (or early) provides a small reputation boost. This is a later-game mechanic, however.
- Maintaining High Mood: Once you have villagers, keeping their mood high (by providing good housing, food, and workplaces) contributes to your overall Dynasty Reputation over time.
Strategy Tip: Focus heavily on side quests. Travel between Gostovia, Denica, and Lesnica. Talk to everyone. Many early side quests are simple "bring me X item" or "go talk to Y person" tasks that can be completed quickly and provide valuable reputation.
Step 3: Recruiting Your First Villager
With a house built and sufficient Dynasty Reputation, you can now convince someone to join your fledgling community. This is perhaps the most exciting part of the quest!
- Where to Find Recruits: Villagers available for recruitment are found in other established villages (Gostovia, Denica, Lesnica, Borowo, etc.). They will have a small house icon above their heads when you are close enough to interact with them.
- Recruitment Requirements:
- Dynasty Reputation: You must meet the minimum reputation threshold (as specified in your quest log).
- Available Housing: You need at least one empty house in your settlement. The house you built in Step 1 will serve this purpose.
- Villager Skills: When you talk to a potential recruit, you'll see their skills (e.g., Farming, Hunting, Extraction, Production, Diplomacy, Survival). For your first recruit, consider someone with a skill that will help you gather basic resources or produce food, such as a farmer or a hunter.
- The Recruitment Process:
- Approach an NPC with the house icon above their head.
- Initiate dialogue.
- Select the dialogue option: "How would you like to come and live in my village?" (or similar wording).
- If you meet the requirements, they will accept!
Important Considerations for Your First Recruit:
- Gender: Your first recruit can be male or female. If you recruit a female, she can become pregnant and contribute to your population growth. If you recruit a male, he can be assigned to various production buildings.
- Skills:
- A Farmer (high Farming skill) is excellent for planting crops and managing fields once you build a barn and fields.
- A Hunter (high Hunting skill) can staff a Hunting Lodge, providing a steady supply of meat and leather.
- An Extractor (high Extraction skill) can work in a Woodshed (for logs/sticks) or a Mining Hut (for stone/ore).
- Mood: Once recruited, your villager's mood will be affected by their housing, food, and workplace. Ensure they have a roof over their head and access to food (initially, you'll need to put food in the Food Storage building once you build it, or they will take from your personal inventory if you don't have a Food Storage).
Common Pitfalls and Tips for Success
- Resource Management: Always keep an eye on your log, stick, stone, and straw reserves. You'll need a lot of them for initial buildings.
- Weight Limit: Be mindful of your carrying capacity. Don't over-encumber yourself, especially when gathering building materials. Consider crafting a simple backpack early on.
- Food and Water: Ensure you have a consistent supply of food and water for yourself. Your villagers will also require food once recruited.
- Tools: Keep your tools repaired! A broken hammer or axe will halt your progress. Craft simple stone tools or buy iron tools from vendors if you have the coin.
- Night Travel: Avoid traveling at night, especially in unfamiliar territory. Wolves and other predators are more active, and visibility is poor.
- Save Frequently: Medieval Dynasty can be unforgiving. Save your game often, especially before undertaking major tasks or exploring new areas.
- Explore Villages: Don't just stick to Gostovia. Visit Denica, Lesnica, and other settlements to find more side quests and potential recruits.
Upon successfully recruiting your first villager, "A New Beginning" will be marked as complete, and you'll receive your rewards. This pivotal moment signifies the true start of your dynasty, opening up new possibilities for expansion, resource production, and community management.
