Tips for Stealth
Welcome, aspiring infiltrator! While Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake offers moments for direct confrontation, mastering stealth is paramount to survival and success. This section will equip you with the knowledge and tactics to navigate Zanzibar Land unseen and unheard.
Understanding Enemy Vision and Hearing
- Vision Cones: Guards have a distinct cone of vision in front of them. Pay close attention to their patrol patterns. Moving outside this cone, or directly behind them, is your safest bet.
- Sound Cues: Footsteps, gunfire, and even opening doors can alert nearby guards. Walk slowly (by lightly pressing the D-pad) when near enemies or in sensitive areas.
- Line of Sight: Even if you're not in their direct cone, guards can spot you from a distance if you're in their general line of sight, especially in open areas. Use cover whenever possible.
Essential Stealth Gear & Tactics
Your inventory is your best friend. Utilize these items strategically:
- Cardboard Box: The iconic Cardboard Box is your primary disguise.
- Acquisition: You'll find your first Cardboard Box in the truck on the first screen of the game (the Truck Depot).
- Usage: Equip it and stand still. Guards will often mistake you for inanimate cargo. This is especially effective in areas with many crates or in truck bays. Be aware that some guards, particularly those on higher alert, might investigate a lone box.
- Movement: You can slowly move while inside the box, but this increases the risk of detection. Only move short distances when absolutely necessary.
- Cigarettes: While not a direct stealth item, Cigarettes can reveal laser tripwires and other invisible traps.
- Acquisition: Often found in guard posts or locker rooms. Keep an eye out!
- Usage: Equip and use them in suspicious corridors or rooms. The smoke will highlight otherwise invisible obstacles, allowing you to bypass them without triggering an alarm.
- Chaff Grenades: These are invaluable for disabling electronic surveillance.
- Acquisition: Typically found in weapon caches or dropped by specific enemies.
- Usage: Throw a Chaff Grenade to temporarily disrupt cameras, laser grids, and even some automated gun turrets. This creates a window of opportunity to slip past. Be mindful of the duration of the effect.
- Suppressor: For your Handgun, a Suppressor is critical for silent eliminations.
- Acquisition: Often found alongside the Handgun or in armories.
- Usage: Attach it to your Handgun to take out guards without alerting others. Remember, even with a suppressor, a body left in plain sight can still trigger an alert if discovered.
- Locker Hiding: Many areas feature lockers or small alcoves.
- Usage: If a guard is approaching your position and you can't move, duck into a locker. This provides excellent cover and allows you to observe patrol patterns safely.
Environmental Awareness
- Shadows and Dark Areas: While not explicitly a "shadow system" like later games, staying out of direct light or hugging walls can sometimes make you less conspicuous.
- Ventilation Shafts: Keep an eye out for grates on walls or floors. These often lead to ventilation shafts, providing alternate, stealthy routes around heavily guarded areas.
- Distractions: Sometimes, a well-placed shot (even a suppressed one) at a wall or an object can draw a guard's attention, allowing you to sneak past their original position.
General Stealth Principles
- Patience is Key: Don't rush. Observe enemy patterns, wait for openings, and plan your movements.
- Save Frequently: If you're attempting a complex stealth sequence, save your game beforehand. This allows for trial and error without significant backtracking.
- Avoid Direct Confrontation: While you have weapons, engaging multiple guards in a firefight is often a recipe for disaster and will quickly raise the alert level.
- Body Disposal: If you must neutralize a guard, try to do so in a secluded spot. If not, consider dragging their body (by walking over them) to a less visible location to prevent other guards from discovering them.
