Blade Mode & Zandatsu Mastery
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance's combat hinges on your ability to effectively utilize Blade Mode and execute Zandatsu. Blade Mode allows you to enter a slow-motion state where you can precisely slice enemies in any direction. This is crucial for severing limbs, disarming opponents, and, most importantly, setting up Zandatsu opportunities.
To enter Blade Mode, press and hold the indicated button (typically R1/RB). While in Blade Mode, you can freely aim your slashes with the analog stick. The key to maximizing its effectiveness lies in targeting specific enemy parts. For most standard enemies, a well-placed vertical slash can sever their arms or legs, leading to a stagger. For tougher foes and bosses, identifying weak points is paramount. For instance, against bosses like Mistral, severing the Dwarf Gekko arms attached to her whip is essential to create openings.
Zandatsu, meaning "cut and take," is the ultimate reward for skillful play. When an enemy is staggered or critically wounded, a prompt will appear, indicating a Zandatsu opportunity. Activating this will trigger a cinematic where Raiden plunges his blade into the enemy and rips out their repair unit (or other vital components). Successfully performing a Zandatsu instantly replenishes Raiden's health and provides him with a large amount of energy for his Blade Mode. Mastering the timing of Blade Mode activation and the precision of your slashes is the direct path to consistent Zandatsu executions.
Practice is key. Spend time in combat encounters simply experimenting with Blade Mode. Try different angles and speeds of slashes. Observe how enemies react to being dismembered. The more comfortable you become with the free-aiming and slicing mechanics, the more fluid your combat will become, and the more frequently you'll be able to perform devastating Zandatsu attacks, keeping you alive and in the fight.
