Abkhazian Streets Walkthrough
Welcome to the war-torn Abkhazian Streets, a crucial early-game section that introduces you to the core combat mechanics and environmental hazards of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. This area serves as a proving ground for your Blade Mode skills and parry timing, so be prepared for intense, close-quarters engagements.
Section Overview & Objectives
Your primary objective in the Abkhazian Streets is to navigate through the heavily fortified urban environment, eliminate hostile cyborg forces, and proceed to the next area. This section emphasizes direct combat, though limited stealth opportunities exist. Pay close attention to environmental cues and enemy patrol patterns.
Enemy Encounters & Strategies
The Abkhazian Streets are swarming with various cyborg units. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses is key to efficient progression.
- Cyborg Ninjas (Standard): These are your most common foes. They wield high-frequency blades and attack in groups.
- Strategy: Focus on parrying their attacks to create openings for Blade Mode. A successful parry often stuns them, allowing you to initiate a Zandatsu for health and fuel cell recovery. Prioritize taking down ranged attackers first if present.
- Cyborg Ninjas (Rocket Launcher): These variants are equipped with shoulder-mounted rocket launchers, providing long-range suppressive fire.
- Strategy: These are high-priority targets. Close the distance quickly and eliminate them before they can launch rockets, which can deal significant damage and knock you down. Use Ninja Run to dodge incoming projectiles.
- Gekko: These bipedal, goat-like mechs are surprisingly agile and can deliver powerful kicks.
- Strategy: Gekko are vulnerable to precise cuts. Aim for their legs in Blade Mode to cripple them, then follow up with attacks to their main body. Be wary of their charge attacks and stomps.
- Armored Cyborgs (Shielded): These tougher cyborgs carry large shields, making frontal assaults difficult.
- Strategy: Their shields are impervious to normal attacks. You must either parry their attacks to expose their back or use Blade Mode to precisely cut their limbs or the shield itself. Throwing environmental objects (like cars) can also stagger them, creating an opening.
- Mastiff (Mini-Boss): You'll encounter at least one Mastiff in this area, typically guarding a key choke point or objective. These large, dog-like cyborgs are fast and hit hard.
- Strategy: The Mastiff's primary weakness is its exposed back. Dodge its lunging attacks and try to get behind it. Once stunned, use Blade Mode to target its spine for a quick Zandatsu. Be prepared for quick-time events (QTEs) during its charge attacks.
Environmental Hazards & Interactive Elements
The Abkhazian Streets are not just a battlefield but also a dynamic environment that can be used to your advantage or detriment.
- Tripwires: Laser tripwires are often placed across doorways or narrow passages. Touching them triggers an alarm and spawns additional enemies.
- Strategy: Use your Augmented Mode (AR) to detect tripwires. You can either jump over them, slide under them (by pressing the dodge button while running), or carefully cut them with Blade Mode.
- Security Cameras: Mounted on walls and poles, these cameras will alert nearby enemies if you enter their field of view.
- Strategy: Use AR to spot cameras. You can destroy them with a ranged attack (e.g., a thrown object or a sub-weapon if you have one) or avoid their gaze entirely. Destroying them prevents reinforcements.
- Explosive Barrels/Containers: Red barrels are scattered throughout the streets.
- Strategy: Hit these with a melee attack or throw an enemy into them to cause an explosion, damaging and stunning nearby foes. This is excellent for crowd control.
- Cars & Debris: Various vehicles and large pieces of rubble are present.
- Strategy: Many of these can be picked up and thrown at enemies using your strong attack (Triangle/Y). This is particularly effective against shielded enemies or groups.
Stealth Opportunities & Limitations
While Metal Gear Rising is primarily a character action game, limited stealth options are available. In the Abkhazian Streets, stealth is generally discouraged due to the game's design, which heavily rewards aggressive combat and Zandatsu for resource management.
- Stealth Kills (Ninja Kills): If you approach an unaware enemy from behind, a prompt will appear allowing for an instant stealth kill.
- Limitations: Opportunities are scarce in this section due to patrol patterns and the density of enemies. Relying on stealth will significantly slow your progress and often put you at a disadvantage by isolating you from Zandatsu opportunities. The game's core loop of parry-cut-Zandatsu is essential for maintaining health and fuel cells, which stealth kills do not provide.
- Best Use: Use stealth kills primarily to thin out small, isolated groups or to eliminate a particularly annoying enemy (like a rocket launcher cyborg) without alerting the entire area. Do not attempt to clear entire sections via stealth; it's inefficient and counter-productive to the game's design.
- Augmented Mode (AR): Use AR to scout enemy positions, patrol routes, and detect hazards like tripwires and cameras. This is crucial for planning your approach, whether stealthy or aggressive.
Collectibles & Hidden Items
Keep an eye out for these valuable items scattered throughout the Abkhazian Streets:
- Data Storage: These glowing blue data chips often contain lore entries or unlock concept art.
- Location Example: One Data Storage is typically found early in the section, often tucked away behind some debris or in a small alcove off the main path, usually guarded by a single cyborg. Use AR to spot its distinct blue glow.
- Cardboard Boxes: While not a collectible in the traditional sense, finding and destroying all cardboard boxes in an area can sometimes unlock a small bonus or achievement.
- Repair Nanopaste: Often dropped by enemies or found in destructible crates. Always pick these up for health regeneration.
- Electrolyte Packs: Less common, these fully restore your Fuel Cell gauge. Crucial for extended Blade Mode use.
Recommended Loadout & Upgrades
For the Abkhazian Streets, focus on core upgrades that enhance your combat efficiency:
- Health Upgrades: Prioritize increasing your maximum health. The fights here can be brutal, and more health means more room for error.
- Fuel Cell Upgrades: More fuel cells allow for extended Blade Mode use, which is critical for Zandatsu and precise cuts.
- Defensive Upgrades: Consider upgrading your defensive parameters to reduce incoming damage.
- Offensive Upgrades: While less critical than health/fuel, increasing your attack power will speed up encounters.
- Sub-Weapons: The Grenade is a solid choice for crowd control, and the Homing Missile can be useful against Gekko or rocket launcher cyborgs if you have the BP.
