Trophies / Achievements
Welcome, Patriots, to the definitive guide for unlocking every Trophy and Achievement in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. This section will provide detailed, actionable strategies to help you conquer even the most challenging accolades, from collecting every weapon to earning the coveted Big Boss Emblem.
Road Map to Platinum
Achieving 100% completion in MGS4 requires multiple playthroughs. We recommend the following sequence for maximum efficiency:
- First Playthrough (Normal/Big Boss Hard): Focus on enjoying the story, collecting as many weapons as possible, and getting a feel for the game mechanics. Don't worry too much about stealth or alerts. This is a good run to aim for the "Collect All Weapons" and "Collect All iPod Tracks" trophies.
- Second Playthrough (Big Boss Emblem Attempt - The Ultimate Challenge): This is where you'll aim for the Big Boss Emblem, which inherently unlocks many other trophies related to stealth, no kills, and speed. This run should be on the highest difficulty available (The Boss Extreme, if unlocked) and requires meticulous planning.
- Clean-up Playthroughs: Use these runs to mop up any remaining trophies, such as specific flashback triggers, unique kill methods, or specific emblem requirements you might have missed.
Trophy Categories & Strategies
001.0 – Trophies (General)
Many trophies are earned simply by progressing through the story or performing specific actions. Keep an eye out for these as you play.
- Story Progression Trophies: These are unmissable and unlock automatically as you complete each Act.
- Flashback Trigger Trophies: Throughout the game, certain locations or interactions will trigger nostalgic flashbacks. To ensure you don't miss any, explore every corner and interact with suspicious objects. For example, in Act 1, revisit the spot where Snake first met Otacon in MGS1 (near the tank hangar entrance) to trigger a flashback. In Act 4, stand in specific spots in Shadow Moses, like the helipad or the tank hangar, to trigger memories.
- iPod Track Collection: There are numerous iPod tracks scattered throughout the game, often found in hidden areas, dropped by enemies, or purchased from Drebin. Consult a dedicated iPod track guide to ensure you collect them all. Many are in lockers, behind destructible walls, or in hard-to-reach spots.
002.0 – Weapons Collector
To earn the "Collect All Weapons" trophy, you must acquire every single weapon available in the game. This includes:
- Standard Weapons: Found in the environment, dropped by enemies, or purchased from Drebin. Always check every corner of a new area.
- Unique Weapons: Some weapons are only obtainable through specific means, such as the Rail Gun (obtained after defeating Crying Wolf), the MGL-140 (found in Act 2, inside the research lab), or the Patriot (unlocked by earning the Big Boss Emblem).
- Drebin's Stock: Regularly check Drebin's shop. His inventory expands as you progress through the game and collect more Drebin Points (DP). sell unwanted weapons to free up space and earn DP.
- Boss Weapons: After defeating each of the Beauty and the Beast Corps members non-lethally (using tranquilizers or CQC), you can pick up their unique weapons (e.g., the P90 from Laughing Octopus, the M14 EBR from Raging Raven).
- Non-Lethal Approach: For the boss weapons, remember to defeat the B&B members by depleting their Psyche Gauge, not their Health Gauge. This will allow you to pick up their unique weapons after the fight.
003.0 – Emblems
Emblems are awarded at the end of each playthrough based on your performance. There are 40+ emblems, each with specific requirements. Many are mutually exclusive, meaning you'll need multiple playthroughs to earn them all.
- Stealth Emblems: "Fox," "Big Boss," "Hound" – require low alerts, no kills, and minimal damage.
- Combat Emblems: "Crocodile," "Scorpion" – awarded for high kill counts and aggressive play.
- Speed Emblems: "Bee," "Tortoise" – awarded for completing the game quickly or slowly, respectively.
- Unique Action Emblems: "Chicken" (high alerts, many kills, many continues), "Bear" (many CQC takedowns), "Centipede" (many item uses).
- Strategy: For efficiency, combine emblem runs. For example, a "No Kill" run can also be a "No Alert" run, contributing to higher-tier stealth emblems.
004.0 – The Ghosts of Shadow Moses
This trophy requires you to trigger all flashbacks in Act 4: Shadow Moses. This is a critical trophy that can be easily missed if you rush through the area. Take your time and explore every iconic location.
- Helipad: Stand on the helipad where Snake first arrived in MGS1.
- Tank Hangar: Enter the tank hangar and walk around.
- Nuclear Warhead Storage Building: Enter the building and explore the various rooms, including the office where Meryl was held.
- Cyborg Ninja Fight Area: Go to the area where Snake fought Gray Fox.
- REX Hangar: Enter the Metal Gear REX hangar.
- Liquid Ocelot Fight Area: Revisit the area where you fought Liquid Ocelot.
- Specific Items: Interact with specific items like the broken security cameras or the MGS1-era computer terminals.
005.0 – Flashbacks (General)
Beyond Shadow Moses, there are other flashbacks scattered throughout the game. These are often triggered by interacting with specific objects or visiting certain locations. Pay attention to visual cues or subtle changes in the environment.
- Act 1: Middle East: Visit the area where Snake first met Otacon in MGS1.
- Act 2: South America: Explore the jungle and the research facility thoroughly.
- Act 3: Europe: During the chase sequence, keep an eye out for specific landmarks.
006.0 – iPod Tracks
Collecting all iPod tracks is a separate trophy. Many are found in lockers, hidden rooms, or dropped by specific enemies. Some can also be purchased from Drebin.
- Locker Search: Always check every locker you encounter.
- Enemy Drops: Certain unique enemies or bosses might drop tracks.
- Drebin's Shop: Check Drebin's inventory regularly, as new tracks become available.
- Specific Locations: Some tracks are in very specific, often out-of-the-way, locations. For example, in Act 1, there's a track hidden in a ventilation shaft.
007.0 – Big Boss Emblem Guide
This is the ultimate challenge and the most difficult trophy to obtain. Earning the Big Boss Emblem requires a perfect run on the highest difficulty. Here are the key requirements and strategies:
- Difficulty: Must be completed on "The Boss Extreme" difficulty.
- No Kills: You cannot kill a single enemy. Use tranquilizers (Mk. 2 Pistol, Mosin Nagant), CQC takedowns, or non-lethal grenades (Stun Grenades, Smoke Grenades).
- No Alerts: You cannot trigger a single alert phase. If an alert is triggered, reload your last save immediately.
- No Continues: If you die, you must reload your save. Do not use a continue.
- No Recovery Items: You cannot use any recovery items (e.g., Noodles, Regain, Ration).
- No Special Items: This includes the Stealth Camo, Bandana, and any other special items that make the game easier.
- Completion Time: Finish the game within 5 hours.
- Damage Taken: Keep damage taken to a minimum (ideally 0).
- Saves: Limit your saves to 25 or fewer.
- Strategy:
- Route Planning: Plan your route meticulously for each section. Know enemy patrol patterns and optimal paths.
- Weapon Loadout: Prioritize the Mk. 2 Pistol and Mosin Nagant for non-lethal takedowns. The Solid Eye is invaluable for spotting enemies and traps.
- CQC Mastery: Become proficient in CQC. It's your primary tool for silently incapacitating enemies.
- Patience is Key: Do not rush. Wait for openings, observe enemy movements, and plan your next move carefully.
- Save Scumming: Save frequently, especially before challenging sections. If you make a mistake (alert, kill, damage), reload immediately.
- Boss Fights: For the Beauty and the Beast Corps, use tranquilizers to deplete their Psyche Gauge. For other bosses, focus on non-lethal methods if possible, or use the environment to your advantage.
- OctoCamo Usage: Utilize the OctoCamo to its fullest potential. Blend into every surface.
- Cardboard Box: Don't underestimate the power of the cardboard box for stealth and quick movement.
