Enemy Types & Weaknesses
Understanding the various enemy types you'll encounter in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and exploiting their weaknesses is paramount to a successful mission. Whether you prefer a stealthy approach or a more direct confrontation, knowing your adversaries will save you precious resources and keep Snake alive. This section details common enemy types, their behaviors, and the most effective ways to neutralize them.
Standard Grunt (Soviet Soldier)
These are the most common enemies you'll face. They are typically equipped with AK-47s and patrol established routes. While not particularly intelligent, they can quickly raise an alarm if they spot Snake or find a body.
- Behavior: Patrols, investigates suspicious noises, calls for backup if alerted.
- Weaknesses:
- Headshots: A single shot to the head with almost any firearm (e.g., M1911A1, SAA) is an instant, silent kill.
- CQC: Grab and interrogate for intel, then knock out or slit their throat. Effective for stealth.
- Tranquilizer: The EZ Gun or Mk22 tranquilizer pistol is ideal for non-lethal takedowns. Aim for the head or torso for quicker effect.
- Distractions: Throwing a magazine (select from inventory) or a rotten fruit will draw their attention, allowing you to sneak past or ambush.
- Traps: Setting a Claymore mine on their patrol path can eliminate them silently, but be mindful of other patrols.
- Recommended Gear: Mk22, M1911A1, Combat Knife, Magazine, Claymore.
Guard Dog
Often found accompanying soldiers or guarding specific areas, these K9 units have superior senses of smell and hearing, making them excellent at detecting Snake even when camouflaged. They are fast and can inflict significant damage if they get close.
- Behavior: Barks to alert soldiers, charges and bites if it detects Snake.
- Weaknesses:
- Tranquilizer: The Mk22 is highly effective. A single shot will put them to sleep, preventing an alert.
- CQC: A well-timed CQC throw can stun them, allowing for a follow-up tranquilizer shot or a quick kill with the Combat Knife.
- Food: Throwing a piece of captured food (e.g., a Snake, Rat, or captured bird) can distract them for a short period, allowing you to sneak past.
- Silent Weapons: The M1911A1 with a Suppressor or the SAA (if you're accurate) can dispatch them quickly and quietly.
- Recommended Gear: Mk22, Combat Knife, captured food items.
Heavy Infantry (Armored Soldiers)
These formidable foes are clad in body armor, rendering most small arms fire ineffective against their torso. They often carry heavier weapons like shotguns or light machine guns and move slower than standard grunts.
- Behavior: Slow, heavily armed patrols. More resilient to frontal attacks.
- Weaknesses:
- Headshots: The most reliable method. Aim for the head with any lethal firearm (e.g., AK-47, M1911A1).
- Explosives: Grenades are highly effective. A well-placed Fragmentation Grenade will take them down quickly. RPG-7 is overkill but works.
- Shotgun Blasts: The Shotgun (found in areas like Bolshaya Past South) at close range can penetrate their armor or knock them down, allowing for follow-up shots.
- CQC (Advanced): While difficult due to their bulk, a successful CQC throw can expose their unarmored back, allowing for a quick lethal knife attack or a burst of fire.
- Stun Grenades: Temporarily disorients them, providing an opening for headshots or a quick escape.
- Recommended Gear: AK-47, M1911A1, Fragmentation Grenades, Shotgun, Stun Grenades.
Snipers
Snipers are typically positioned in high vantage points, overlooking key areas. They have excellent long-range accuracy and can spot Snake from a considerable distance. Their laser sights are a dead giveaway of their presence.
- Behavior: Static positions, long-range attacks, often accompanied by a spotter.
- Weaknesses:
- Counter-Sniping: The SVD Sniper Rifle (often found in areas like Krasnogorje Mountainside) is your best bet. Use your binoculars to locate them, then take a precise shot.
- Stealth Approach: use camouflage and cover to get close enough for a CQC takedown or a silent weapon kill (e.g., Mk22 headshot).
- Smoke Grenades: Throwing a Smoke Grenade can obscure their line of sight, allowing you to advance or retreat.
- RPG-7: If you have an RPG-7 (found in various weapon caches), a direct hit will eliminate them, though it's loud.
- Recommended Gear: SVD Sniper Rifle, Mk22, Smoke Grenades, Binoculars.
Patrol Boats/Hovercrafts
Encountered in watery areas, these vehicles are often armed with mounted machine guns and can quickly cover distances. They are a significant threat in open water.
- Behavior: Patrols water bodies, fires continuously if Snake is detected.
- Weaknesses:
- RPG-7: The most effective weapon. One or two direct hits will destroy them.
- Grenades: If you can get close enough (e.g., by swimming near the bank), a well-aimed Fragmentation Grenade can damage or destroy them.
- Mounted Turrets: In some areas, you might find fixed machine gun turrets that can be used to engage them.
- Stealth (Underwater): Staying submerged with the O2 Tank (found in areas like Dremuchij Swampland) can allow you to bypass them entirely.
- Recommended Gear: RPG-7, Fragmentation Grenades, O2 Tank.
