The M1911A1 is a good choice, but any pistol will do. You can also use CQC to disarm him temporarily, but he recovers quickly. A more effective strategy is to use the tranquilizer darts from your M9 pistol to hit him in the head. This will stun him, allowing you to get in a few shots with your primary weapon. Another tactic is to use the environment to your advantage; if you can get behind him, you can perform a CQC grab and disarm him, or even throw him.
