Sound & Vision Detection
The Metal Gear Solid series meticulously simulates enemy awareness, with both sight and sound playing critical roles in detection. Enemies are not just passive obstacles; they actively patrol, listen for disturbances, and react to visual cues. Understanding how these senses work is fundamental to remaining undetected and planning your movements effectively.
Your actions, no matter how small, can have significant consequences if they fall within an enemy's sensory range. A dropped item, a misfired shot, or even the sound of your footsteps can alert guards to your presence. Conversely, you can use these mechanics to your advantage by creating diversions or by carefully observing enemy patrol patterns and sight cones.
Enemy Vision
Enemies have a cone of vision that extends in front of them. Anything within this cone is potentially visible. The color of the enemy's vision indicator (often displayed on the radar or as an icon above their head) sifies their current awareness level: white for normal vision, yellow for suspicion, and red for alert.
- Line of Sight: Enemies can only see what is directly in front of them. Obstacles like walls, crates, and even tall grass can block their line of sight.
- Distance: The further away you are, the harder it is for enemies to spot you, especially if you are moving slowly or are partially obscured.
- Movement: Rapid or erratic movements are more likely to catch an enemy's eye than slow, deliberate ones.
Enemy Hearing
Enemies are also sensitive to sound. Loud noises, such as gunshots, explosions, or even the sound of your footsteps on certain surfaces, can attract their attention. They will often investigate the source of suspicious sounds.
- Noise Levels: Different actions produce different noise levels. Walking on metal grates is louder than walking on carpet.
- Distance: The further away an enemy is, the less likely they are to hear faint sounds.
- Environmental Noise: Ambient sounds, like rain or machinery, can sometimes mask your own noises, making it easier to move undetected.
Alert Indicators
When an enemy becomes suspicious, an exclamation mark or a question mark may appear above their head, indicating they are investigating. If they spot you directly, this will escalate to a full alert, often accompanied by a radar scramble or a change in music.
