This is where you will unlock and develop the vast arsenal of weapons, gadgets, and support items that will aid you in your missions. The R&D process is directly tied to the quality and quantity of your recruited personnel, as well as the resources you gather from the field. Investing in R&D is crucial for staying ahead of the enemy and for tackling the increasingly difficult challenges that Peace Walker throws at you. A well-equipped Snake is a formidable force, and the R&D department is the key to achieving that.

The R&D process begins with recruiting soldiers with the appropriate technical skills and assigning them to the R&D department. As your R&D staff grows and gains experience, you will unlock new research tiers. Each tier offers a selection of new weapons, items, and upgrades. For example, you might start by researching basic firearms like pistols and assault rifles, but as you progress, you'll unlock advanced weaponry such as grenade launchers, sniper rifles, and even experimental weapons. Similarly, your inventory of support items will expand to include things like smoke grenades, stun grenades, C4 explosives, and various medical supplies. The resources you collect from missions, such as metal, fuel, and rations, are consumed during the research and development process.
