Base Management & Facilities

Welcome to the core of your operations in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops! Effective base management is crucial for success, allowing you to recruit new soldiers, develop advanced weaponry, and heal your injured personnel. This section will guide you through optimizing your facilities and maximizing your squad's potential.

Recruitment & Squad Management

Your base thrives on new recruits. Capturing enemy soldiers during missions is the primary way to expand your ranks. Once captured, these soldiers are sent to your base for processing.

  • Capture Strategy: To recruit effectively, you must incapacitate enemies without killing them. The best methods include:
    • Tranquilizer Gun (Mk. 22): Found early in the game, this non-lethal pistol is essential. Aim for headshots for quick incapacitation.
    • Chokeholds/CQC: Approach enemies from behind and use CQC (Circle + Analog Stick) to put them in a chokehold. You can then knock them out or hold them up.
    • Stun Grenades: Effective for stunning multiple enemies, making them easier to capture.
  • Transportation: After an enemy is incapacitated, you must drag their unconscious body to a designated "capture zone" (marked on your map) or a cardboard box delivery point. The Fulton Recovery System is not available in Portable Ops.
  • Squad Screen: Access the "Squad" menu from your base to manage your personnel. Here you can:
    • Assign Roles: Each soldier has specific stats (Combat, Medical, Spy, Tech). Assign them to the appropriate unit (Combat Unit, Medical Unit, Spy Unit, Tech Unit) to boost that unit's level.
    • Dismiss Soldiers: If you have too many low-skilled soldiers, you can dismiss them to make room for better recruits.
    • View Stats: Check individual soldier stats to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Unit Facilities & Development

Each unit at your base contributes to different aspects of your operations. The higher a unit's level, the more benefits you receive.

Combat Unit

This unit determines the strength and number of soldiers you can deploy on missions. A higher Combat Unit level allows for:

  • Increased Squad Size: Deploy more soldiers per mission, giving you more tactical options.
  • Better Soldier Stats: Recruited soldiers tend to have higher base stats.
  • Strategy: Prioritize assigning soldiers with high "Combat" stats to this unit. Early in the game, focus on building a solid Combat Unit to handle tougher missions.

Medical Unit

The Medical Unit is vital for healing injured soldiers and developing medical items.

  • Healing Speed: A higher Medical Unit level significantly reduces the time it takes for injured soldiers to recover.
  • Item Development: Unlocks and speeds up the development of medical items like Rations, Life Medicine, and Anti-Personnel Mines (which can be used for non-lethal takedowns if placed strategically).
  • Strategy: Always have a strong Medical Unit. Injured soldiers cannot be deployed, so quick recovery is paramount. Assign soldiers with high "Medical" stats.

Spy Unit

The Spy Unit gathers crucial intelligence, revealing enemy positions and item locations on mission maps.

  • Map Intelligence: A higher Spy Unit level provides more detailed maps, showing enemy patrol routes, item pickups, and even hidden passages.
  • Enemy Intel: Reveals enemy types and their equipment before deployment.
  • Strategy: A strong Spy Unit is invaluable for planning missions. Assign soldiers with high "Spy" stats. Early investment here can save you a lot of trouble.

Tech Unit

The Tech Unit is responsible for developing new weapons, equipment, and improving existing gear.

  • Weapon Development: Unlocks powerful new firearms, explosives, and gadgets. Examples include the M1911A1, AK-47, Grenades, and Claymores.
  • Equipment Upgrades: Improves the effectiveness of items like the Cardboard Box, increasing its stealth capabilities.
  • Strategy: Invest in your Tech Unit to gain access to better firepower and utility items. Assign soldiers with high "Tech" stats. Prioritize developing the Suppressor for your Mk. 22 early on for stealth advantages.

Managing Resources & Time

  • Time Progression: Time in Portable Ops progresses as you complete missions. This affects soldier recovery and item development.
  • Resource Management: While there isn't a direct "currency" system for base upgrades, the quality and quantity of your recruited soldiers act as your primary resource. Always aim to capture high-ranking enemies.
  • Optimal Deployment: Before each mission, carefully select your squad based on the mission objectives and the intelligence provided by your Spy Unit. Don't send injured soldiers into battle!
