Cardboard Box Mechanics
The humble Cardboard Box is one of Solid Snake's most iconic and versatile tools for infiltration and evasion. Far more than just a disguise, mastering its mechanics can significantly alter your approach to various situations, allowing for stealthy movement, quick escapes, and even strategic item transportation.
Acquiring and Equipping Cardboard Boxes
There are three distinct Cardboard Boxes available throughout Shadow Moses Island, each with a unique designation that corresponds to specific transportation routes:
- Cardboard Box 1: Found in the Tank Hangar, on the ground floor, near the elevator. This box is essential for using the transportation system between the Tank Hangar and the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building.
- Cardboard Box 2: Located in the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building, on the first floor (B1), within the storage area. This box allows access to the transportation system connecting the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building and the Snowfield.
- Cardboard Box 3: Discovered in the Snowfield, near the entrance to the Communications Tower. This box is used for transportation between the Snowfield and the Tank Hangar.
To equip a Cardboard Box, navigate to your item inventory using the START button, select the desired box, and press X. Snake will crouch and pull the box over himself. To unequip, simply select another item or weapon, or press the action button (usually Circle) while stationary to stand up and remove the box.
Stealth and Evasion Tactics
The primary use of the Cardboard Box is for stealth. When equipped, Snake becomes virtually invisible to guards unless they are very close or actively investigating a suspicious sound. Here's how to maximize its stealth potential:
- Line of Sight: Guards will not detect you if you are in a Cardboard Box and out of their direct line of sight. Use environmental cover like crates, walls, or machinery to further obscure yourself.
- Movement: You can move while wearing a Cardboard Box, but your movement speed is significantly reduced. This is best used for short, careful movements between cover or to slowly advance on an unsuspecting guard.
- Sound: Moving in a Cardboard Box still generates some noise. Avoid moving directly behind guards or in areas with sensitive sound detection (e.g., metal grates).
- Distraction: If a guard is alerted but hasn't seen you, equipping a Cardboard Box can sometimes cause them to lose interest and return to their patrol route, especially if you move out of their immediate area of suspicion.
- Camouflage: In certain environments, the Cardboard Box can blend remarkably well. For instance, Box 1 in the Tank Hangar can be placed among other crates to become almost indistinguishable.
Transportation System Utilization
Beyond simple stealth, Cardboard Boxes are crucial for utilizing the automated transportation system on Shadow Moses Island. This system allows for rapid travel between key areas, saving significant time and avoiding dangerous patrols:
- Locate a Delivery Point: These are marked by yellow and black striped platforms, often found in loading bay areas or large open rooms.
- Equip the Correct Box: Ensure you have the Cardboard Box corresponding to your desired destination. For example, to travel from the Tank Hangar to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building, you need Cardboard Box 1.
- Stand on the Platform: While wearing the correct Cardboard Box, stand still on the designated delivery point.
- Wait for Transport: After a short delay, a forklift or automated system will pick up the box (with Snake inside) and transport you to the linked location.
Important Considerations:
- Alert Status: You cannot use the transportation system if you are in an "Alert" status. Ensure the area is clear before attempting to travel.
- Box Specificity: Each transportation route requires a specific box. Attempting to use the wrong box will result in no transport occurring.
- Strategic Shortcuts: Master these routes to quickly backtrack for items, avoid difficult enemy encounters, or reach objectives faster. For example, using Box 3 to return to the Tank Hangar from the Snowfield can be a lifesaver if you need to resupply or access earlier areas.
By understanding and effectively utilizing the Cardboard Box mechanics, you'll find new avenues for strategic play and overcome many of Shadow Moses's challenges with classic Solid Snake ingenuity.
