Welcome, rookie, to the world of Tactical Espionage Action! You're about to embark on a legendary mission as Solid Snake, the legendary infiltrator. This guide will walk you through the initial steps of your infiltration into Shadow Moses Island, a remote Alaskan nuclear weapon storage facility that has been seized by rogue members of the Hi-Tech Unconventional Warfare Unit, FOX-HOUND.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to rescue two key hostages: Donald Anderson, the DARPA Chief, and Kenneth Baker, the President of ArmsTech. More importantly, you must neutralize the terrorist threat and prevent them from launching a nuclear strike using their new weapon, Metal Gear REX. Expect to face off against Shadow Warriors, Next-Generation Special Forces, and uncover a conspiracy involving VR Simulation, Gene Therapy, and the Soldier Gene.

The Infiltration: Dock Area

Your mission begins with a stealthy insertion into the icy waters surrounding Shadow Moses Island. Prepare for immediate action as you navigate the initial Dock area.

  • Initial Drop: You'll be dropped into the water near the submarine dock. Your first objective is to surface and locate an entry point.
  • Underwater Navigation: Swim forward and slightly to the right. You'll see a small opening in the dock wall. Dive underwater (press X on PlayStation) and swim through this opening.
  • Surfacing Point: Once through the opening, surface in the small alcove. You'll find a ladder here. Climb up (press Triangle) to reach the main dock level.

Dock Walkthrough

Upon reaching the dock, your immediate goal is to proceed towards the Heliport. Be mindful of guard patrols.

  1. First Guard Patrol: As you climb the ladder, a guard will be patrolling the immediate area. Wait for him to turn his back and walk away from your position before proceeding.
  2. Crawl Space Entry: To your left, you'll notice a low-hanging pipe or vent. Crouch (press Circle) and crawl underneath it to remain undetected.
  3. Cardboard Box (Optional but Recommended): After crawling through, you'll emerge near some crates. Look for a Cardboard Box tucked away in this area. Pick it up (press Triangle). This item is invaluable for stealth later on.
  4. Proceeding North: Continue moving north along the dock. Stick to the shadows and use the crates and structures for cover.
  5. Second Guard Encounter: Another guard patrols the northern end of the dock. Observe his pattern. You can either sneak past him when his back is turned or, if you're feeling bold, use a quick CQC takedown (approach from behind and press Square) or a tranquilizer if you have one (though you won't have one yet).
  6. Heliport Entrance: At the very northern end of the dock, you'll find a set of stairs leading up to the Heliport. Ascend these stairs to proceed to the next area.

Key Items to Note

  • Codec: Your primary communication device. Colonel Campbell and Naomi Hunter will contact you frequently. Pay attention to their calls for vital mission updates and strategic advice. You can access the Codec by pressing Select and then navigating to the Codec option.
  • AP Sensor: This handy device will alert you to nearby enemies with a distinct beeping sound. The faster the beep, the closer the enemy. It's automatically equipped at the start.
  • Binoculars: Found early in the game, these allow you to scout ahead without exposing yourself. Essential for planning your routes. Keep an eye out for them in the Heliport area.

Remember, stealth is your greatest weapon. Avoid direct confrontation whenever possible, and use your environment to your advantage. Good luck, Snake!
