Disc 2 Walkthrough

Welcome to Disc 2, Snake! The stakes are higher, and the challenges more intense. This section will guide you through the latter half of your mission, detailing every crucial step, item, and strategy to ensure your success against Metal Gear and its operators.

After the Torture

Upon starting Disc 2, you'll likely be recovering from Ocelot's torture. Your health will be low, and you'll be without most of your equipment. Your immediate priority is survival and re-equipping yourself.

  • Escape the Cell: If you submitted to the torture, you'll find yourself in a cell. Ocelot will leave you. Wait for the guard to approach and either knock him out or hide under the bed until he enters the cell to investigate. Once he's inside, quickly exit the cell.
  • Retrieve Your Gear: Your items are in a locker in the guard room. Be stealthy, as guards patrol this area. The SOCOM and FAMAS are essential. Don't forget your Cardboard Box for quick evasion.
  • Find Meryl: Meryl is being held in a nearby cell. Use the PAL Key (Card Key Level 6) you acquired earlier to open her cell door.

The Communications Tower

Your next objective is to reach the top of the Communications Tower to contact Campbell and receive further instructions.

Communications Tower A

  • Ascending the Tower: This section is heavily guarded. Utilize the stairs and ladders, taking out guards silently with the SOCOM or using chokeholds. Watch out for security cameras.
  • Picking Up Supplies:
    • Ration: Often found on various levels or in small alcoves.
    • Grenades: Useful for clearing groups of guards or destroying cameras from a distance.
    • Stinger Missiles: Crucial for the upcoming boss fight. Ensure you have a good supply.
  • Sniper Alley: As you climb, you'll encounter a long, exposed walkway. This is Sniper Alley.
    • Strategy: Equip your PSG-1 Sniper Rifle. Look for the sniper glints from the enemy snipers. Take them out quickly before they can pinpoint your position. Move between cover points (small pillars) to avoid getting hit.
    • Hidden Item: There's often a Thermal Goggles pickup in this area, which can help spot snipers in fog or low visibility.

Communications Tower B

  • The Ascent Continues: More guards and cameras. The layout is similar to Tower A but with different patrol patterns.
  • Boss Fight: Liquid Snake (Hind D)
    • Location: The very top of Communications Tower B.
    • Equipment: You MUST have the Stinger Missile Launcher equipped.
    • Strategy:
      1. Targeting: Lock onto the Hind D with your Stinger.
      2. Evasion: Liquid will fire missiles and machine-gun rounds. Dodge his attacks by rolling (X button) or moving behind the central structure.
      3. Timing: Fire your Stinger when Liquid is hovering or making a pass. Aim for the cockpit or the main body.
      4. Patience: This is a battle of attrition. Keep moving, keep firing, and don't get greedy. Use Rations if your health gets low.

The Snowfield and Blast Furnace

After the Hind D battle, you'll descend the tower and proceed towards the Snowfield.

  • Snowfield Navigation: The snowfield is a wide-open area. Be wary of enemy patrols. Use the snowdrifts for cover.
  • Blast Furnace Entrance: The entrance to the Blast Furnace is usually heavily guarded. Consider using Chaff Grenades to disable security cameras and turrets before engaging guards.

Metal Gear REX Hangar

This is it. The final confrontation with Metal Gear REX.

Phase 1: Destroying REX's Radome

  • Equipment: You'll need the Stinger Missile Launcher.
  • Strategy:
    1. Targeting: REX's weak point in this phase is its radome (the large, circular radar dish on its left shoulder).
    2. Evasion: REX will use its machine gun, missiles, and laser. Stay mobile. Roll to dodge missiles and the laser.
    3. Timing: Wait for REX to expose its radome. This usually happens after it attacks or when it's turning. Fire a Stinger missile.
    4. Repeat: It will take several direct hits to destroy the radome. Conserve your Stinger ammo and pick up any scattered around the arena if needed.

Phase 2: Destroying REX's Cockpit

  • Equipment: Still the Stinger Missile Launcher.
  • Strategy:
    1. Targeting: With the radome destroyed, REX's cockpit (where Liquid is piloting) is exposed.
    2. Evasion: REX becomes more aggressive. Its attacks are faster and more frequent.
    3. Opportunity: After REX performs certain attacks, it will briefly open its cockpit hatch. This is your window to fire a Stinger.
    4. Precision: Aim carefully. A direct hit to the cockpit is required. This phase is more challenging due to REX's increased speed and attack patterns.

Liquid Snake (Hand-to-Hand)

After defeating Metal Gear REX, you'll face Liquid in a final hand-to-hand combat sequence atop REX's remains.

  • No Weapons: This is a pure brawl. Your only tools are your fists.
  • Combat Moves:
    • Punch/Kick Combo: Press the Circle button repeatedly for a three-hit combo.
    • Throw: Press Square while moving towards Liquid to grab and throw him.
    • Dodge: Use the X button to crouch and avoid some of Liquid's attacks.
  • Strategy:
    1. Aggression: Be aggressive but don't overcommit. Land a combo or a throw, then create some distance.
    2. Counter: Liquid will often charge at you. Dodge and counter with your own attacks.
    3. Health Management: Use Rations if you have any left, though this fight is more about skill than resource management.
    4. Patience: Liquid has a lot of health. Keep chipping away at him until he's defeated.

The Escape

Congratulations, you've defeated Liquid! Now, you must escape the facility before it self-destructs.

  • Time Limit: A countdown timer will appear. You need to reach the exit before it hits zero.
  • Vehicle: You'll be in a jeep with Meryl (or Otacon, depending on your choices).
  • Maneuvering: Drive the jeep through the collapsing tunnels. The path is mostly linear.
  • Enemy Jeeps: Enemy jeeps will pursue you. Meryl (or Otacon) will provide covering fire. Focus on driving and avoiding obstacles.
  • Final Obstacle: Liquid will make one last attempt to stop you. Drive straight at him.

Upon successfully escaping, enjoy the ending cutscenes and reflect on your epic journey through Shadow Moses Island!
