Understanding enemy patrol patterns and AI behavior is paramount to success in Metal Gear Solid. Each enemy type, from the standard Genome Soldier to the more specialized guards, operates with distinct routines and reactivities. Genome Soldiers typically patrol in predictable paths, often in pairs, with one guard covering a wider area while the other maintains a more focused watch. Their vision cones are clearly defined, and by observing their movements from cover, you can identify safe windows for passage.

Alertness levels play a crucial role. When an enemy spots something suspicious, they will enter an "!" state, investigating the area. If they find evidence (like a dropped item or a disturbed object), they escalate to a "?" state, actively searching for the source of the disturbance. If they directly see Snake, they will initiate combat and sound an alarm, leading to reinforcements and increased security measures.

Key AI behaviors to exploit include their tendency to group up when alerted, making them vulnerable to tranquilizer darts or grenades. They also have a limited memory; if you break line of sight quickly after being spotted, they may return to their patrol after a brief search. Some guards are more vigilant than others; for instance, guards near key objectives or in high-security areas will often have shorter patrol routes and more frequent checks.
