Snowfield & Sniper Wolf
The journey through Shadow Moses Island takes a chilling turn as you emerge from the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building into the treacherous Snowfield. This expansive, exposed area is the domain of one of FOXHOUND's most formidable members: Sniper Wolf. To survive this encounter and proceed, you must first acquire the proper tools and understand the environment.
Pre-Snowfield Preparation: Acquiring the PSG1 Sniper Rifle
Before you even think about stepping into the Snowfield, you absolutely must acquire the PSG1 Sniper Rifle. Attempting to face Sniper Wolf without it is a futile endeavor. The game guides you to this weapon, but the exact steps are crucial to understand.
- Defeat Revolver Ocelot: You will have just finished your intense showdown with Revolver Ocelot in the Commander's Room (B1). After this fight, you'll obtain the Lv. 1 Card Key.
- Contact Master Miller: After the Ocelot fight, proceed to the Heliport or Tank Hangar. Call Master Miller on your Codec (140.96). He will inform you about the PSG1's location and its necessity for dealing with a sniper.
- Retrieve the PSG1:
- Head back to the Nuclear Warhead Storage Building.
- Descend to B2.
- Locate the Armory. This is the room with numerous lockers and weapon racks.
- The PSG1 is located in the southwestern corner of the Armory, behind a locked door that requires the Lv. 1 Card Key you just acquired.
Critical Note: Do NOT enter the Snowfield before obtaining the PSG1. The game's progression is designed for you to get this weapon first. If you enter the Snowfield and trigger the cutscene with Sniper Wolf, you will be in a very disadvantaged position and will likely need to backtrack.
Navigating the Snowfield & Environmental Hazards
The Snowfield itself presents its own challenges beyond Sniper Wolf. The biting cold is a constant threat to your stamina.
- Cold Effect: Your stamina bar will continuously drain while exposed to the cold. If your stamina reaches zero, your health will begin to deplete.
- Countermeasures:
- Ration: Use Rations to restore stamina. Keep a healthy supply.
- Body Temperature: Equipping the Thermal Goggles can help you visually locate enemies and items, but they do not negate the cold effect.
- Movement: Minimize your exposure time. Move efficiently and engage Sniper Wolf quickly.
Boss Strategy: Sniper Wolf (First Encounter)
This is your first direct confrontation with Sniper Wolf. She is a master marksman, and you'll need to match her precision.

Recommended Loadout:
- Weapon: PSG1 Sniper Rifle (essential)
- Items: Rations (plenty!), Pentazemin (crucial for steady aim), Thermal Goggles (optional, but helpful for spotting)
Battle Overview:
Sniper Wolf will position herself on the far side of the snowfield, often behind a snowbank or rock formation. She will take shots at you from a distance. Your goal is to find a safe vantage point, aim carefully, and return fire.
Step-by-Step Strategy:
- Initial Positioning: As you enter the Snowfield, immediately move to the right or left to get behind some cover. There are several large rocks and snowbanks that can provide temporary concealment.
- Locate Sniper Wolf:
- Equip your PSG1.
- Use the scope to scan the far side of the snowfield. She often appears near the large rock formations or the edge of the cliff.
- If you have Thermal Goggles, equip them briefly to help spot her heat signature.
- Find Your Vantage Point:
- Recommended Spot 1 (Right Side): There's a small, raised snowbank on the far right side of the entrance. This offers good cover and a relatively clear line of sight.
- Recommended Spot 2 (Left Side): A similar snowbank exists on the far left.
- Prone Position: Always go prone (crawl) when aiming with the PSG1. This significantly reduces your profile and makes you a harder target.
- Steady Your Aim with Pentazemin:
- Before taking a shot, use a Pentazemin. This drug temporarily steadies Snake's hands, making your scope less wobbly. This is absolutely vital for hitting a moving target at long range.
- You can carry up to 5 Pentazemin. Use them wisely, but don't hesitate when you have a clear shot.
- Engage Sniper Wolf:
- Once you have a clear shot and have used Pentazemin, aim for her head. Headshots deal significantly more damage.
- After firing, immediately unequip the PSG1 and move to a different piece of cover or adjust your position. She will likely return fire.
- Pattern Recognition: Sniper Wolf typically fires in bursts or after a short delay. Learn her rhythm to anticipate her shots.
- Patience is Key: Do not rush your shots. Wait for a clear opening. It's better to take fewer, accurate shots than many missed ones.
- Manage Stamina and Health:
- Keep an eye on your stamina bar. If it gets low, use a Ration.
- If you take damage, use a Ration to restore health.
- Repeat: Continue this cycle of finding cover, locating Wolf, using Pentazemin, taking a shot, and repositioning until her health bar is depleted.
Common Pitfalls:
- Ignoring Pentazemin: Trying to shoot without Pentazemin is extremely difficult due to Snake's natural sway.
- Standing Up: Standing while aiming makes you an easy target. Always go prone.
- Staying in One Spot: After taking a shot, Sniper Wolf will often adjust her aim. Moving makes you harder to hit.
- Running Directly at Her: This is a death sentence. Maintain distance and use your sniper rifle.
Upon successfully defeating Sniper Wolf, a cutscene will play, and you will be able to proceed further into the Snowfield towards the Communications Tower.
