Vulcan Raven (Tank)

The first encounter with the imposing Vulcan Raven pits Solid Snake against him in a heavily armored tank. This battle takes place in the Tank Hangar exterior, a large, open courtyard area filled with various obstacles and cover points. Unlike the later Snowfield encounter with Sniper Wolf, this environment is characterized by its industrial structures and the presence of patrolling guards, adding an extra layer of tactical complexity to the fight.

Recommended Loadout & Preparation

  • Grenades: Your primary weapon for disabling the tank. Stock up as much as possible before the fight. You can find additional grenades scattered around the arena.
  • SOCOM Pistol: Essential for silently eliminating patrolling guards without alerting Raven or drawing their fire.
  • FAMAS (Optional): While not ideal for the tank itself, the FAMAS can be useful for quickly dispatching guards if stealth fails, or for sustained fire on Raven once he's exposed.
  • Ration: Always carry a few Rations for emergency health recovery.
  • Chaff Grenades (Optional): Can temporarily disable the tank's targeting system, giving you a brief window to move or attack without immediate threat.

Phase 1: Disabling the Tank

Upon entering the Tank Hangar exterior, Vulcan Raven will immediately engage you in his M1 Abrams tank. The objective of this phase is to damage the tank's treads, forcing Raven to expose himself.

Strategy for Tank Engagement:

  1. Utilize Cover: The area is dotted with large crates, concrete barriers, and even smaller structures. These are crucial for shielding yourself from the tank's main cannon and heavy machine gun fire. Always move from cover to cover.
  2. Anticipate Tank Movement: The tank follows a predictable patrol route around the perimeter of the courtyard. Observe its pattern to anticipate its next position and plan your grenade throws.
  3. Timing Your Grenade Throws:
    • The most effective way to damage the tank is by throwing grenades directly into its path, aiming for the treads.
    • Wait for the tank to stop or slow down, typically when it's about to fire its main cannon or machine gun. This is your window to throw.
    • Lead your throws slightly, as grenades have an arc and a short fuse time. A well-placed grenade will explode directly under the tank, causing significant damage.
    • You'll need approximately 6-8 direct grenade hits to disable the tank, depending on difficulty.
  4. Avoiding Tank Fire:
    • Main Cannon: The tank's main cannon fires powerful shells that can one-shot Snake on higher difficulties. When Raven is about to fire, a distinct sound cue will play, and the cannon will visibly adjust. Immediately take cover behind a solid object.
    • Machine Gun: The machine gun has a wider arc of fire and can suppress Snake, making movement difficult. Duck behind cover or continuously sprint to avoid sustained fire.
    • Chaff Grenades: If you have them, a Chaff Grenade can temporarily disrupt the tank's targeting, causing it to fire erratically or pause, providing a safe window for movement or attack.
  5. Managing Patrolling Guards:
    • Several Genome Soldiers patrol the area. They will actively engage Snake if they spot him, adding another layer of threat.
    • Prioritize stealthily eliminating guards with your SOCOM. Aim for headshots to take them down quickly and quietly.
    • If a guard spots you, quickly dispatch them to prevent them from calling in reinforcements or drawing Raven's attention unnecessarily.
    • The guards often drop ammo or rations, which can be useful.

Phase 2: Engaging Vulcan Raven Directly

Once the tank has sustained enough damage, its treads will be disabled, and it will come to a halt. Vulcan Raven will then expose himself from the tank's turret, wielding a heavy machine gun.

Strategy for Direct Engagement:

  1. Continue Grenade Assault: Your grenades are still highly effective. Aim them directly at Raven as he pops out of the turret.
  2. FAMAS Fire: If you're low on grenades or prefer direct fire, the FAMAS can be used to chip away at Raven's health. Aim for his upper body.
  3. Maintain Distance and Cover: Raven's machine gun is still dangerous. Keep moving, using the available cover to break his line of sight and avoid sustained fire.
  4. Exploiting Openings: Raven will occasionally pause his firing to reload or adjust. These are prime opportunities to land your attacks.
  5. Watch for Grenade Resupply: If you run critically low on grenades, quickly scout the arena for resupply points, but be extremely cautious as Raven will still be firing.

Victory & Progression

After a sustained assault, Vulcan Raven will be defeated, and the tank will be rendered inoperable. There is no specific key card reward directly from Raven at this point. Instead, your victory grants you access to the next area, allowing you to progress further into Shadow Moses Island.

Important Note on Key Cards: The Lv. 1 Card Key is obtained much earlier from the DARPA Chief. The Lv. 2 Card Key is acquired significantly later in the game, not from this boss fight. Defeating Vulcan Raven here is a critical story progression point, opening up new pathways and objectives.

Common Pitfalls

  • Running out of Grenades: Not stocking up sufficiently or missing too many throws can leave you vulnerable.
  • Ignoring Guards: Allowing guards to accumulate or alert Raven can quickly overwhelm Snake.
  • Standing in the Open: The tank's main cannon is lethal; never stay exposed for long.
  • Impatience: Rushing in without observing the tank's patterns or managing guards will lead to quick defeat.
