Survival Mechanics (Hunger, Thirst, Oxygen)
Mastering the core survival mechanics of Hunger, Thirst, and Oxygen is paramount to your success in the desolate world of Metal Gear Survive. Neglecting these vital stats will quickly lead to debuffs, reduced combat effectiveness, and ultimately, death. This section will provide actionable strategies and item locations to keep you alive and thriving.
Managing Hunger
Your Hunger meter depletes steadily over time, especially during strenuous activities like sprinting, fighting, or gathering resources. A low Hunger meter will reduce your stamina regeneration and maximum stamina, making combat and exploration significantly harder.
- Foraging for Food:
- Wild Plants: Keep an eye out for edible plants scattered throughout the Dust. Look for glowing berries (e.g., Crimson Berries) and mushrooms (e.g., Dust Shrooms). These offer small but immediate hunger relief.
- Animal Carcasses: Defeated creatures, particularly larger Wanderer variants, often drop raw meat (e.g., Raw Beast Meat, Raw Bird Meat). These are excellent for hunger but require cooking.
- Cooking: The Key to Sustenance:
- Campfires: The most basic cooking station. Craft a Campfire using 3x Wood and 2x Small Stones. Place it in a safe area, interact with it, and select your raw ingredients. Cooked food provides significantly more hunger restoration and often grants temporary buffs.
- Cooking Pot: A more advanced cooking station found at your Base Camp. The Cooking Pot allows for more complex recipes using multiple ingredients, yielding superior food items (e.g., Hearty Stew, Grilled Skewers) that offer greater hunger satisfaction and longer-lasting buffs.
- Recipes: Experiment with different combinations of raw meats, wild plants, and even purified water to discover new recipes. Many recipes are unlocked by simply cooking the right ingredients together.
- Emergency Rations:
- MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat): These pre-packaged rations can be found in supply crates or dropped by certain enemies. They offer instant, moderate hunger relief and are invaluable when you're far from a cooking station. Always carry a few.
Quenching Thirst
Thirst is just as critical as hunger. A parched survivor will experience reduced health regeneration and slower movement speed, making them vulnerable to the Dust's dangers.
- Finding Water Sources:
- Water Puddles/Streams: While seemingly abundant, directly drinking from these sources will give you Contaminated Water, which can lead to illness.
- Water Extractors: These deployable structures can be crafted and placed in specific locations to passively collect water. Prioritize building and maintaining these at your Base Camp and forward operating bases.
- Water Bottles: Empty water bottles can be found throughout the world. Fill them at clean water sources or use a Water Purifier.
- Purifying Water:
- Water Purifier: This essential crafting station, available at your Base Camp, transforms Contaminated Water into safe, drinkable Purified Water. Always process any contaminated water you collect.
- Boiling Water (Campfire): In a pinch, you can boil Contaminated Water over a Campfire to make it safe, though this is less efficient than a dedicated purifier.
- Hydration Items:
- Purified Water: The most common and reliable way to quench thirst. Always carry several bottles.
- Hydration Packs: Similar to MREs, these provide significant thirst relief and can be found in supply drops or enemy loot.
Breathing in the Dust (Oxygen)
The Dust is a hostile environment, and prolonged exposure without proper protection will quickly deplete your Oxygen meter, leading to suffocation and death. This mechanic is primarily active when venturing outside of safe zones or areas with clear air.
- Oxygen Tanks:
- Standard Oxygen Tank: Your primary means of breathing in the Dust. These have a limited capacity and deplete over time. Keep an eye on your Oxygen meter, especially during extended expeditions.
- Upgraded Oxygen Tanks: As you progress and unlock new crafting recipes, you'll be able to craft larger capacity Oxygen Tanks (e.g., Large Oxygen Tank, Heavy Duty Oxygen Tank) at your Base Camp's crafting stations. Prioritize these upgrades.
- Refilling Oxygen:
- Oxygen Stations: These are fixed points found in certain areas, often near wormhole generators or established outposts. Interact with them to fully refill your equipped Oxygen Tank.
- Base Camp: Your Base Camp provides a safe, oxygenated environment where your tank will automatically refill.
- Emergency Oxygen Canisters: Small, single-use items that provide a quick burst of oxygen. Useful for extending your time in the Dust or in critical situations. These can be found in supply caches or crafted.
- Minimizing Oxygen Consumption:
- Avoid Sprinting: Sprinting in the Dust consumes Oxygen at a much faster rate. Conserve your energy and walk when possible.
- Stay in Safe Zones: Whenever possible, retreat to areas with clear air or established Oxygen Stations to conserve your tank's supply.
- Wormhole Generators: Activating and maintaining Wormhole Generators in the Dust creates localized safe zones where you don't consume Oxygen. Prioritize repairing and defending these.
