Story Missions Walkthrough
Welcome, fellow survivor, to the detailed walkthrough for Metal Gear Survive's main story missions. This guide will navigate you through the treacherous Dite, offering strategies, item locations, and essential tips to ensure your survival and success. Prepare for a challenging journey, but with this guide at your side, you'll overcome every obstacle the dust has to throw at you.
Chapter 1: The First Step
Objective: Reach the Base Camp.
- Walkthrough:
Your journey begins disoriented and alone. Follow the on-screen prompts to learn basic movement (Left Stick to move, Right Stick to look) and interaction (X/A to interact). Your immediate goal is to locate the Base Camp. Head generally north-east, keeping an eye out for environmental markers like broken structures and a faint smoke plume in the distance. You'll encounter a few Wanderers along the way; use your basic melee attacks (R2/RT for light, L2/LT for heavy) to dispatch them. Conserve your stamina (indicated by the yellow bar) by avoiding unnecessary sprinting.
As you approach the dilapidated structure marked on your rudimentary map, you'll trigger a cutscene and establish your first Base Camp. This is your primary hub for crafting, resting, and mission preparation. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the various stations: the Workbench for crafting tools and weapons, the Cooking Pot for preparing food and water, and the Storage Box for inventory management.
- Key Items & Resources (Scavenge Immediately):
- Scrap Metal (x5-10): Found by breaking down rusted vehicles, metal debris, and small piles of scrap. Essential for early crafting.
- Wood Planks (x5-10): Found by breaking down wooden crates, fences, and fallen logs. Crucial for basic tools and defenses.
- Rations (x2-3): Often found in abandoned tents or small containers. Replenishes hunger.
- Dirty Water (x2-3): Found in puddles or broken water dispensers. Must be boiled at the Cooking Pot to become safe.
- Basic Melee Weapon (e.g., Pipe): You start with one, but keep an eye out for stronger alternatives dropped by Wanderers or found in crates.
- Tactical Tip: Even in this early stage, practice headshots on Wanderers. It's a one-hit kill and conserves durability on your melee weapon.
Chapter 2: The Search for Water
Objective: Secure a reliable water source.
- Walkthrough:
Your Base Camp is established, but resources are scarce, especially clean water. Your first priority is to secure a sustainable water source. Head west from your Base Camp, following the faint trail that leads towards a more arid, dust-filled area. You'll soon enter a region where visibility is reduced, and Wanderers are more prevalent. Stay alert and use your stealth (Crouch: Circle/B) to avoid unnecessary engagements.
You'll eventually discover a broken-down water pump, identifiable by its distinct silhouette against the dusty backdrop. Interact with it to trigger a repair sequence. You'll need 3x Scrap Metal and 2x Wood Planks to fix it. These can be found by breaking down debris in the immediate surrounding area (look for small metal piles and wooden crates) or from defeated Wanderers. If you're short, return to the area around your Base Camp for more common resources.
Once repaired, the pump will provide a steady supply of Dirty Water. Remember to boil it at your Base Camp's cooking pot (requires Wood Planks as fuel) to make it safe for consumption. Consuming unboiled water can lead to illness, reducing your stamina and health regeneration.
- Key Items & Resources:
- Dirty Water: Obtained from the repaired water pump. Collect as much as your inventory allows.
- Scrap Metal (x3): Required for pump repair.
- Wood Planks (x2): Required for pump repair and cooking fuel.
- Empty Water Bottle (x1-2): Often found near the water pump or in nearby structures. Allows you to carry more water.
- Common Pitfall: Forgetting to boil water. Always process Dirty Water at your Cooking Pot before drinking.
Chapter 3: The Lost Signal
Objective: Investigate the source of a mysterious signal.
- Walkthrough:
A faint signal has been detected, hinting at other survivors or vital information. Head south-east from your Base Camp, towards the large, ruined radio tower visible in the distance. This area is heavily populated with Wanderers, including the more aggressive Bombers.
Tactical Approach for Bombers: Bombers are distinguished by the glowing, explosive crystal on their backs. They will charge you and detonate, dealing significant area-of-effect damage.
- Stealth: Prioritize stealth (crouch-walking, using cover) to avoid detection. If a Bomber is unaware, you can often sneak up and perform a stealth kill (Triangle/Y when prompted) which destroys the crystal without detonation.
- Ranged Combat: If stealth isn't an option, use ranged weapons. A few shots to the crystal on their back will cause them to explode prematurely, damaging nearby enemies. This is an excellent crowd-control tactic. If you don't have a bow or firearm yet, craft a few Throwing Knives at the Workbench; they are effective against the crystal.
- Melee Combat (Last Resort): If forced into melee, dodge their charge (Circle/B) and then quickly attack their back crystal. Be prepared to retreat immediately after they explode.
As you approach the tower, you'll need to navigate through a series of collapsed structures and debris. Look for a path leading upwards, often involving climbing over rubble or through broken stairwells. You'll eventually reach a console at the top of the tower. Interact with it (X/A) to attempt to re-establish the signal.
Combat Encounter: Upon activating the console, you'll be ambushed by a wave of Wanderers, including a few Bombers. The console area offers limited cover.
- Prioritize Bombers: Take out any Bombers first, using their explosions to clear other Wanderers.
- Choke Points: Use the narrow pathways leading to the console as choke points. Deploy any crafted Fences or Barricades if you have them to slow down the incoming horde.
- Molotov Cocktails: If you have any crafted Molotov Cocktails (requires Alcohol and Cloth), now is an excellent time to use them for crowd control, especially against groups of Wanderers.
- Headshots: Continue to aim for headshots on regular Wanderers to conserve ammo/weapon durability.
After repelling the attack, the signal will be partially restored, revealing a new objective location further afield. A brief cutscene will play, updating your mission.
- Key Items & Resources:
- Radio Parts (x1-2): Can be found near the base of the tower, often in small crates or on ledges. Useful for crafting later communications equipment.
- Small Backpack Blueprint: (Optional) Located in a hidden crate or locker near the tower's base (often requires a bit of exploration around the perimeter). This blueprint allows you to craft a Small Backpack, significantly increasing your inventory space. Highly recommended to find!
- Gunpowder (x1-2): Occasionally dropped by Bombers or found in military-style crates around the tower. Essential for crafting firearms ammo.
- Arrow/Bolt Crafting Materials: If you have a bow/crossbow, scavenge for Feathers and Wood Planks in the area.
- Reference Link: For more detailed strategies against Bombers, refer to the Enemy Types & Weaknesses: Bomber section of this guide.
Chapter 4: Into the Dust
Objective: Reach the new signal's origin point.
- Walkthrough:
The signal leads you deeper into the treacherous dust. This chapter introduces extended periods in the dust, requiring careful management of your oxygen and stamina. Before venturing out, ensure you have a full oxygen tank and at least 2-3 Oxygen Tank Refills (crafted at the Workbench using Chemicals and Scrap Metal). Your oxygen level is indicated by the blue bar on your HUD; when it depletes, your health will rapidly decrease.
The path is generally linear, following the signal marker on your map, but it is fraught with danger. You'll encounter new enemy types, including the fast-moving Trackers.
- Trackers: These enemies are quick and agile, often appearing in small packs. They excel at flanking. Use your fences and traps (e.g., Barbed Wire Fence, Spike Trap) to slow them down if you're forced into combat. Aim for headshots or use wide-arc melee swings to hit multiple at once.
Midway through the journey, you'll discover a small, abandoned outpost. This provides a temporary safe zone (no dust inside) and a chance to restock on basic supplies. Look for a Dirty Water Bottle and some Rations inside the main building. There's often a small Workbench and Cooking Pot here, allowing you to craft and cook without returning to Base Camp. Take this opportunity to craft more oxygen refills if needed.
Continue following the signal marker on your map. The destination is a large, derelict research facility. The approach to the facility is often guarded by a few more Wanderers and Trackers. Prepare for a significant encounter upon arrival.
- Key Items & Resources:
- Oxygen Tank Refill (x2-3 recommended): Essential for extended dust travel. Craft at Workbench.
- Dirty Water Bottle (x1-2): Found in the abandoned outpost.
- Rations (x1-2): Found in the abandoned outpost.
- Chemicals (x2-3): Occasionally found in the abandoned outpost or dropped by specific enemy types. Crucial for Oxygen Tank Refills.
- Barbed Wire Fence Blueprint: (Optional) Sometimes found in the abandoned outpost, allows crafting of defensive barriers.
- Tactical Tip: When traversing the dust, stick to higher ground or the edges of the dust clouds where visibility might be slightly better, allowing you to spot enemies before they spot you.
Chapter 5: The Facility's Secrets
Objective: Investigate the research facility and retrieve data.
- Walkthrough:
The research facility is a labyrinth of dark corridors and lurking dangers. Your primary objective is to locate the main server room and download critical data. The facility is heavily guarded by Wanderers, including new variants like the armored Armored Wanderers.
- Armored Wanderers: These enemies have protective plating on their bodies. Aim for their weak points, which are usually the head (if exposed) or any unarmored limbs. Explosives or heavy melee attacks can also break their armor, exposing them to regular damage.
Navigation: The facility is multi-leveled. Look for stairwells and elevators. Some doors may require power to open; search for nearby generators or fuse boxes to activate them (usually marked with a yellow light or sparking wires). A good strategy is to clear each room methodically before proceeding, checking for resources and hidden pathways.
Puzzle: In one section, you'll encounter a locked door requiring a three-digit code. The code can be found on a whiteboard in a nearby office, usually scrawled faintly. (Hint: Common early game codes include "1-2-3", "4-5-6", or "7-8-9", though it can vary slightly. Always check the immediate vicinity for clues.) The code is often written on a dusty whiteboard or a sticky note attached to a terminal.
Upon reaching the server room (often identifiable by multiple glowing server racks), initiate the data download by interacting with the main terminal. This will trigger a timed defense sequence. You'll need to protect the server from waves of Wanderers for approximately 2 minutes.
- Defense Strategy:
- Pre-deploy Defenses: Before starting the download, scout the room and deploy Fences, Barricades, and any crafted Turrets (e.g., Automatic Turret if you have the blueprint) at choke points leading to the server.
- Prioritize Threats: Focus fire on Armored Wanderers and Bombers first. Use explosives or heavy attacks to quickly deal with Armored Wanderers.
- Crowd Control: Use Molotov Cocktails or area-of-effect weapons to thin out large groups of regular Wanderers.
- Stay Mobile: Don't get cornered. Use the environment for cover and create distance when reloading or healing.
Once the download is complete, a new exit will open, leading you back towards the dust. Collect any dropped loot before leaving.
- Key Items & Resources:
- Data Drive: Automatically acquired upon successful download. This is a mission-critical item.
- Advanced Blueprint: (Optional) Often found in a hidden locker or secure container in the facility's laboratory or a high-security office. This blueprint allows crafting of more powerful weapons (e.g., higher-tier firearms) or advanced base defenses. Search thoroughly!
- Medical Supplies (e.g., First Aid Spray, Painkillers): Commonly found in the facility's medical bays or offices. Crucial for healing.
- Ammunition: Various types of ammunition are often found in crates or on defeated enemies within the facility.
- Common Pitfall: Not preparing defenses before starting the download. The timed defense can be overwhelming without proper setup.
Chapter 6: Return to Base
Objective: Return to your Base Camp with the retrieved data.
- Walkthrough:
With the data secured, your mission is to safely return to Base Camp. The journey back through the dust will be similar to your approach, but now you carry valuable information. Be aware that some areas may have respawned Wanderers or even new patrols of Trackers. Your path will be marked on your map, guiding you back.
If you're low on supplies, take a moment to scavenge along the way, but prioritize reaching safety. The data is crucial, and losing it (by dying before reaching Base Camp) means replaying the previous chapter's defense sequence. Manage your oxygen carefully, especially if you used a lot during the facility's defense.
Upon reaching your Base Camp, a cutscene will play, advancing the story and unlocking new crafting options and base upgrades. You'll now have access to more advanced technologies and potentially new mission types.
- Key Items & Rewards:
- Base Camp Upgrades Unlocked: Access to higher-tier crafting recipes at the Workbench, improved defenses, and potentially new facilities.
- New Mission Types: Side missions or exploration objectives may become available.
- Kuban Energy (Bonus): A significant amount of Kuban Energy is often awarded for completing major story chapters, allowing you to level up your character's skills.
- Post-Mission Actions:
- Upgrade Your Base: Prioritize upgrading your Workbench and Storage Box.
- Level Up: Use the Kuban Energy to improve your core stats (Health, Stamina, Oxygen) or unlock new combat/survival skills.
- Craft New Gear: use any new blueprints you found to craft stronger weapons or armor.
This detailed walkthrough covers the initial chapters of Metal Gear Survive. Remember to constantly scavenge, upgrade your gear, and adapt your strategies to the ever-changing threats of Dite. Good luck, survivor!
