Walkthrough - Chapter 3: The Lost Expedition

Welcome, Recruit, to Chapter 3: The Lost Expedition. This chapter will test your resourcefulness and introduce you to new threats and vital equipment. Prepare for a journey into the deeper, more dangerous regions of Dite.

Objective: Locate the Expedition's Last Known Position

Your primary goal is to find any trace of the missing research expedition. The last known transmission originated from an area marked on your map as the "Dusty Canyon."

  • Starting Point: From your Base Camp, head directly east. You'll want to stick to the northern edge of the initial Dite zone to avoid unnecessary encounters with Wanderers.
  • Navigation: The Dusty Canyon entrance is identifiable by a large, collapsed rock archway. Use your compass and map frequently. The dust storms in this area can severely reduce visibility.
  • Resource Gathering: As you traverse, keep an eye out for Iron Scraps and Small Animal Bones. These are crucial for early weapon and tool upgrades. You'll find them scattered near rock formations and desiccated flora.

Encountering New Threats: Armored Wanderers

Upon entering the Dusty Canyon, you'll encounter a new variant of the Wanderer: the Armored Wanderer. These foes are tougher and require a different approach.

  • Weak Points: Unlike regular Wanderers, Armored Wanderers have plates of hardened crystal on their bodies. Their primary weak point is the glowing core on their back.
  • Strategy:
    • Stealth: If possible, sneak behind them for a critical backstab with your Survival Machete. This often takes them down in one hit.
    • Melee Combat: If direct engagement is unavoidable, aim for their legs to stagger them, then quickly reposition to strike their back. Your Wooden Bat can be effective here, but durability is a concern.
    • Ranged Combat: If you have crafted a Makeshift Bow, a well-placed arrow to the back will deal significant damage. Conserve your Stone Arrows for these tougher enemies.
  • Loot: Armored Wanderers often drop Hardened Crystal Shards, a vital material for crafting advanced defenses and weapons later on.

Finding the Expedition's Camp

Continue deeper into the Dusty Canyon. You'll eventually come across signs of a struggle and makeshift barricades.

  • Location: The expedition's camp is located in a small, sheltered alcove at the canyon's easternmost point. Look for a partially destroyed tent and scattered equipment.
  • Key Item: Inside the tent, you will find the Expedition Log (Page 1). This document provides crucial lore and hints about what happened to the team.
  • Supply Cache: Near the tent, there's a small, intact supply crate. Open it to receive:
    • 3x Ration Pack
    • 5x Clean Water Bottle
    • 10x Gunpowder (new crafting material!)
    • Blueprint: Makeshift Pistol

New Crafting Opportunity: Makeshift Pistol

With the Gunpowder and Makeshift Pistol Blueprint acquired, you can now craft your first firearm.

  • Required Materials:
    • 1x Iron Scraps
    • 1x Hardened Crystal Shard
    • 5x Gunpowder
  • Crafting Location: Return to your Base Camp and use the Crafting Bench.
  • Ammunition: Remember to craft Makeshift Pistol Rounds using Iron Scraps and Gunpowder. Each round requires 1x Iron Scraps and 1x Gunpowder.

Objective: Investigate the Distress Signal

After collecting the Expedition Log, a faint distress signal will appear on your map, originating from a cave system to the north of the Dusty Canyon.

  • Preparation: Before heading to the cave, ensure you have crafted the Makeshift Pistol and at least 20-30 Makeshift Pistol Rounds. The cave system is dark and dangerous.
  • Equipment: Equip your Survival Machete as your primary melee weapon and the Makeshift Pistol as your secondary.
  • Navigation: The cave entrance is partially obscured by dense fog. Look for a narrow opening between two large rock formations.

Inside the Cave: The Lost Survivor

The cave system is teeming with Wanderers. Use your pistol to thin out groups, but conserve ammo for tougher encounters.

  • Enemies: Expect regular Wanderers and a few Armored Wanderers. The confined spaces make melee combat riskier.
  • Finding the Survivor: Follow the sound of the distress signal. You'll find a lone survivor, Dr. Miller, trapped behind a collapsed rockfall.
  • Rescue: To clear the rockfall, you'll need to find 3x Explosive Charges. These are located in small crates scattered throughout the cave.
    • Charge 1: In a small alcove to the left of the main path, guarded by two Wanderers.
    • Charge 2: Near a glowing fungal patch, behind a large stalagmite.
    • Charge 3: At the very end of a dead-end tunnel, requiring you to dispatch an Armored Wanderer.
  • After Rescue: Once you have all three charges, place them on the rockfall and detonate them from a safe distance. Dr. Miller will be freed and will provide you with the Expedition Log (Page 2) and a new blueprint: Advanced Barricade.

Return to Base Camp

With Dr. Miller rescued and new information in hand, it's time to return to Base Camp. The journey back will be less perilous as many Wanderers will have been cleared.

  • New Ally: Dr. Miller will now be available at your Base Camp, offering new side quests and crafting recipes.
  • Chapter Completion: Interacting with the Main Terminal at Base Camp after Dr. Miller's arrival will complete Chapter 3.
