Character Profiles

Understanding the key players in Outer Heaven is crucial for survival and mission success. This section details the main characters you'll encounter, offering strategies for interacting with allies and defeating formidable foes.

Main Characters

These individuals are central to your mission and often provide vital information or assistance. Knowing their roles and how to best utilize their support is paramount.

  • Solid Snake (You)
    • Role: Rookie operative of FOXHOUND, tasked with infiltrating Outer Heaven and destroying the Metal Gear.
    • Strategy: Your primary objective is stealth. Utilize the Cardboard Box (found in various storage rooms, especially in the early base areas) to evade patrols. The Suppressed Pistol (often found in the first few buildings after infiltration) is excellent for silent takedowns. Conserve your ammunition for boss encounters. Remember to frequently call Big Boss on your Transceiver (frequency 120.85) for mission updates and tactical advice.
    • Key Items:
      • Transceiver: Essential for communication.
      • Binoculars: Locate in the armory on the first floor of Building 1. Useful for scouting enemy patrols from a distance.
      • Body Armor: Significantly reduces damage. Found in the underground passage leading to Metal Gear's hangar.
  • Big Boss
    • Role: Commander of FOXHOUND, your direct superior. He provides mission briefings and tactical support via radio.
    • Strategy: Always listen to Big Boss's advice. He will often guide you on where to go next, warn you about upcoming threats, and even provide hints for boss battles. His Transceiver frequency is 120.85. Call him if you're lost or unsure of your next move.
    • Important Interactions: He'll instruct you on rescuing Grey Fox and Dr. Pettrovich Madnar, and will eventually reveal the location of Metal Gear.
  • Grey Fox
    • Role: Legendary FOXHOUND agent, captured during his initial infiltration of Outer Heaven. Your first major objective is to rescue him.
    • Strategy for Rescue:
      1. After infiltrating the base, navigate through Building 1 and into the prison area.
      2. You'll need a Red Card Key (obtained from a guard in the barracks on the second floor of Building 1) to open his cell.
      3. Once freed, Grey Fox will provide crucial information about Metal Gear and the location of Dr. Pettrovich Madnar. He'll also give you the Rocket Launcher, a vital weapon for later boss fights.
  • Dr. Pettrovich Madnar
    • Role: The lead scientist behind Metal Gear, held captive by Outer Heaven. Rescuing him is essential for understanding and ultimately destroying Metal Gear.
    • Strategy for Rescue:
      1. After rescuing Grey Fox, he will direct you to Dr. Pettrovich's location, typically in a laboratory within Building 3.
      2. You'll need a Blue Card Key (found in the office area on the first floor of Building 2) to access his lab.
      3. Upon rescue, Dr. Pettrovich will reveal Metal Gear's weaknesses and provide you with the Plastic Explosives necessary for its destruction. He also introduces you to his daughter, Ellen.
  • Ellen Pettrovich
    • Role: Dr. Pettrovich's daughter, also held captive. She provides emotional support and sometimes minor hints.
    • Strategy: Her rescue is usually concurrent with her father's. While she doesn't offer direct combat assistance, her presence is important for the narrative and for motivating Dr. Pettrovich.

Boss Characters

These are the formidable adversaries you'll face. Each requires a specific strategy and often particular weaponry to defeat. Prepare thoroughly before engaging.

  • Shotgunner
    • Location: Often the first boss, encountered in the armory or a large open room in Building 1.
    • Strategy: The Shotgunner is slow but deals heavy damage up close.
      1. Equip your Handgun or Submachine Gun if you have it.
      2. Maintain distance and fire in short bursts.
      3. Utilize cover (crates, pillars) to avoid his wide-spread shotgun blasts. Move in, shoot, and retreat.
      4. A few well-placed grenades (Grenades are usually found in the same building, often in a storage locker) can also be effective if you can time your throws.
  • Machinegun Kid
    • Location: Typically found in a narrow corridor or a small room in Building 2.
    • Strategy: This enemy is fast and fires rapidly.
      1. The key is to anticipate his movements. He often charges in a straight line.
      2. Lay down Mines (found in various supply rooms throughout Building 2) in his path. When he approaches, he'll trigger them for significant damage.
      3. Alternatively, use the Rocket Launcher (obtained from Grey Fox) if you have enough rockets. Aim carefully as he moves quickly.
      4. If you're out of explosives, use the Submachine Gun and try to corner him, unleashing a continuous stream of fire.
  • Fire Trooper
    • Location: Encountered in a burning room or a heated environment, often in Building 3.
    • Strategy: The Fire Trooper uses a flamethrower, making close-quarters combat dangerous.
      1. Equip the Rocket Launcher. This is your most effective weapon against him.
      2. Keep your distance and fire rockets when he pauses to reload or change direction.
      3. If you're low on rockets, use Grenades. Throw them into the flames he creates, or directly at him.
      4. The Gas Mask (found in a secure locker in Building 3) is highly recommended for this fight to mitigate environmental damage from the flames.
  • Metal Gear
    • Location: The deepest part of Outer Heaven, in a heavily fortified hangar.
    • Strategy: This is the final boss. You'll need the Plastic Explosives from Dr. Pettrovich.
      1. Metal Gear has a weak point: its legs/feet.
      2. Place Plastic Explosives directly on its legs. You'll need to plant several charges.
      3. After placing an explosive, quickly retreat to a safe distance to avoid the blast.
      4. The Body Armor (if you found it) is crucial here to withstand Metal Gear's attacks.
      5. Repeat the process of placing explosives and retreating until Metal Gear is destroyed. Be mindful of the patrolling guards in the hangar; eliminate them silently before focusing on Metal Gear.
