Saving & Loading Your Progress

Infiltrating Outer Heaven is a perilous undertaking, and preserving your progress is paramount. Unlike later installments in the Metal Gear series, the original Metal Gear on the MSX does not feature an auto-save function. You must manually save your game to avoid losing valuable progress. Understanding the mechanics of saving and loading is crucial for any aspiring FOXHOUND operative.

Saving Your Game

To save your current game state, you must utilize your Transceiver (also known as the Codec in later games) and contact a specific frequency. This action will record your current location, inventory, health, and mission progress.

  • Step 1: Access the Transceiver.
    • Press the designated button to bring up your Transceiver menu. On most MSX emulators, this is typically mapped to a function key or a specific controller button.
  • Step 2: Input the Save Frequency.
    • Navigate to the frequency input screen.
    • Dial the frequency 120.79. This is the dedicated frequency for saving your game.
  • Step 3: Confirm Save.
    • Once 120.79 is entered, you will receive a confirmation prompt. Select "YES" to save your game.
    • A message will appear indicating that your game has been saved.
  • Important Considerations:
    • Save Often: It is highly recommended to save frequently, especially after clearing a challenging area, defeating a boss, or acquiring a critical item like the Card Key 1 or the Grenade Launcher.
    • Strategic Saving: Avoid saving in precarious situations, such as when surrounded by enemies or critically low on health, unless absolutely necessary. If you load into a bad situation, you might be forced to restart from an earlier save.
    • No Multiple Save Slots: The original Metal Gear typically only supports one save file. Saving overwrites your previous progress. Plan accordingly.

Loading Your Game

Should you fall in battle, or wish to resume your mission at a later time, you will need to load your saved game. This is done directly from the game's title screen.

  • Step 1: Return to the Title Screen.
    • If you are currently playing, you can usually return to the title screen by selecting "Quit" from the pause menu, or by restarting the game application.
  • Step 2: Select "Load Game".
    • On the main title screen, you will see options such as "New Game" and "Load Game".
    • Use the directional controls to highlight "Load Game" and confirm your selection.
  • Step 3: Resume Operation.
    • Your last saved game will automatically load, placing Solid Snake at the exact point where you last saved, with all his acquired items and current health status.

Mastering the save and load mechanics will ensure a smoother and less frustrating experience as you navigate the treacherous corridors of Outer Heaven. Don't let a simple oversight send you back to the beginning of your mission!
