Post-Game Content
Congratulations, Galactic Federation agent! You've successfully navigated the horrors of Planet ZDR, defeated Raven Beak, and averted a galaxy-wide catastrophe. But Samus Aran's mission isn't truly over until every last secret is unearthed and every challenge conquered. Metroid Dread offers a robust post-game experience for completionists, speedrunners, and those who simply can't get enough of its exhilarating gameplay.
100% Item Completion: The Ultimate Power-Up
The primary objective for many after credits roll is to achieve 100% item completion. This means finding every single Missile Tank, Missile+ Tank, Energy Tank, and Power Bomb Tank scattered across ZDR. While the game guides you through the majority, many are hidden behind environmental puzzles, secret passages, or require advanced movement techniques you might not have mastered during your first playthrough.
Strategy for Item Hunting:
- Map Analysis: Open your map (press the - button) and zoom in on each area. Look for rooms or sections that still show grayed-out areas, indicating unexplored territory. Pay close attention to small, isolated squares or unusual shapes that might hide a secret.
- Pulse Radar (X-Ray Scope): This ability is your best friend for finding hidden blocks. Activate it in suspicious areas, especially near dead ends, seemingly solid walls, or ceilings/floors that look like they could be broken. Remember, some blocks are only breakable with specific weapons (e.g., Plasma Beam, Wave Beam, Screw Attack).
- Bomb/Power Bomb Placement: Experiment with dropping Bombs and Power Bombs in unusual spots. Many hidden passages are revealed this way, often leading to Missile Tanks or Energy Parts. If you see a small indentation or a slightly different texture on a wall, try bombing it.
- Screw Attack Exploration: Once you have the Screw Attack, revisit areas with long stretches of breakable blocks. Simply rolling through these sections can reveal hidden pathways and items you previously couldn't reach.
- Grapple Beam Points: Look for Grapple Beam blocks that might lead to elevated platforms or across wide gaps to secret areas. Sometimes these are subtle and blend into the background.
- Speed Booster/Shinespark Puzzles: Some of the most challenging items require precise Speed Booster activation and Shinespark maneuvers. Practice these techniques in open areas before attempting them in tight spots. Look for long corridors where you can build up speed.
Key Areas for Hidden Items:
- Artaria: Revisit the early sections with your full arsenal. Many hidden Missile Tanks are tucked away in the initial E.M.M.I. zones, accessible only after acquiring the appropriate E.M.M.I. abilities. For example, a Missile+ Tank can be found near the first E.M.M.I. zone entrance by using a Shinespark to break through a floor.
- Cataris: The lava-filled areas often hide items behind breakable blocks that require the Plasma Beam or Wave Beam to destroy safely from a distance. A Power Bomb Tank is notoriously hidden in a vertical shaft requiring a precise Shinespark from a lower level.
- Dairon: The dark sections of Dairon are prime spots for Pulse Radar usage. Look for hidden passages in the walls of the large, open rooms. There's an Energy Tank in the upper-right section that requires a well-timed Speed Booster jump across a gap.
- Burenia: The underwater sections often conceal items in narrow passages or behind breakable blocks that are easily missed due to the reduced visibility. A Missile Tank can be found by using the Screw Attack to break through a ceiling in a large water-filled chamber.
- Ferenia: The advanced movement required for many Ferenia items means you'll likely find several on your return trip. Pay attention to areas with multiple Grapple Beam points that might lead to obscured platforms.
- Ghavoran: The organic environments can make hidden blocks harder to spot. Use your Pulse Radar frequently, especially in rooms with plant-like structures. A Missile+ Tank is hidden behind a series of breakable blocks in a vertical shaft near the central elevator.
- Elun: While a smaller area, Elun has a few tricky items. One Missile Tank requires a precise wall jump sequence to reach a high ledge.
- Hanubia: The final area also contains a few last-minute collectibles, often requiring a combination of abilities to access.
Unlockable Galleries and Modes
Upon completing the game, you'll unlock several rewards based on your performance:
Completion Rewards:
- Ending Screens: The game features different ending screens based on your completion time and item collection percentage. Aim for a faster time and 100% items to see the most detailed and rewarding artwork.
- Hard Mode: Finishing the game on any difficulty unlocks Hard Mode. This mode significantly increases enemy damage and health, making combat much more challenging. It's the perfect test for veteran Metroid players.
- Rookie Mode (DLC): If you found the main game too difficult, the free Rookie Mode DLC offers a more forgiving experience with increased health and reduced enemy damage.
- Dread Mode (DLC): For the ultimate challenge, Dread Mode is unlocked after completing Hard Mode. In Dread Mode, any single hit from an enemy or environmental hazard results in instant death. This mode demands absolute precision and mastery of Samus's moveset.
Gallery Unlocks:
As you complete the game under various conditions, you'll unlock a gallery of illustrations. These often depict key moments from the game or offer concept art. To unlock all of them, you'll need to complete the game on:
- Normal Mode
- Hard Mode
- Dread Mode
- Achieve 100% item completion on at least one playthrough.
- Complete the game within specific time limits (e.g., under 4 hours, under 2 hours, etc.). These time-based unlocks often stack, so a very fast 100% run can unlock multiple gallery images.
Speedrunning: Master the Clock
Metroid Dread is a fantastic game for speedrunning due to its fluid movement, sequence breaks, and challenging boss fights. If you're looking to push your skills to the limit, consider a speedrun.
Speedrunning Tips:
- Learn Boss Patterns: Boss fights are major time sinks. Memorize attack patterns and optimal counters to defeat them as quickly as possible.
- Optimize Movement: Master techniques like Shinesparking, wall jumping, and slide jumping to traverse areas efficiently.
- Sequence Breaks: Research known sequence breaks. These are often advanced techniques that allow you to obtain items or access areas earlier than intended, skipping large portions of the game. Be warned, many require precise execution.
- E.M.M.I. Zone Navigation: Develop efficient routes through E.M.M.I. zones to minimize encounters and escape quickly.
- Practice, Practice, Practice: Speedrunning is all about repetition and refinement. Don't get discouraged by early failures.
Whether you're meticulously searching for every last Missile Tank or racing against the clock in Dread Mode, Metroid Dread's post-game content ensures that Samus's adventure on ZDR can continue long after the final boss falls.
