Mega Core-X

The Mega Core-X is the final form of the SA-X after you defeat it in the Restricted Lab. This is it, Samus! The last obstacle before you can escape the BSL Research Station. This boss fight is a test of endurance and precise movement. Be prepared for a long battle, and make sure your Missile and Energy Tanks are topped off!

Phase 1: SA-X Core

Initially, the Mega Core-X will appear as the SA-X's Core-X. This phase is relatively straightforward, but don't get complacent.

  • Strategy: The SA-X Core will float around the room, occasionally dashing towards you. Your primary attack here is your Plasma Beam.
  • Attacks:
    • Dash: The Core-X will charge horizontally or diagonally across the screen. Jump or duck to avoid.
    • Energy Orbs: It will sometimes fire small energy orbs that home in on your position. Shoot them down with your Plasma Beam to clear a path.
  • Weak Point: The SA-X Core itself. Continuously fire your Plasma Beam at it.
  • Transition: After taking enough damage, the SA-X Core will transform into the Mega Core-X.

Phase 2: Mega Core-X

This is the true final boss. The Mega Core-X is a massive, multi-limbed creature that will fill a large portion of the screen. This phase requires careful dodging and well-timed Missile shots.

Mega Core-X Attacks and Evasion

The Mega Core-X has several devastating attacks. Learning their patterns and how to evade them is crucial for survival.

  • Arm Swipes: The Core-X will extend its large, clawed arms across the screen.
    • Evasion: These are often telegraphed. Watch for the arm to retract slightly before it sweeps. You'll need to jump over or duck under them. Sometimes, it will perform a double swipe, requiring two quick evasions.
  • Energy Blasts: It will fire large, slow-moving energy projectiles from its main body.
    • Evasion: These can be shot down with your Plasma Beam, but it's often safer to simply move out of their path. They travel in predictable patterns.
  • Core-X Spawns: Periodically, the Mega Core-X will release smaller Core-X enemies.
    • Strategy: These are a nuisance and can replenish your health and missiles if absorbed. Prioritize absorbing them quickly, but don't let them distract you from the main boss's attacks.
  • Laser Beam: The Mega Core-X will sometimes charge up and fire a wide, horizontal laser beam across the screen.
    • Evasion: This is one of its most dangerous attacks. The beam will cover a significant portion of the screen. You'll need to quickly find a safe spot, usually a small gap between the beam and the floor/ceiling, or use your Space Jump to stay airborne above it.

Offensive Strategy

Your primary weapon against the Mega Core-X is your Missiles. The Plasma Beam is useful for clearing spawned Core-X and energy blasts, but it does negligible damage to the boss itself.

  • Weak Point: The large, central eye of the Mega Core-X. This is the only place where your Missiles will deal significant damage.
  • Attack Windows: The eye is not always exposed. It will often be covered by its arms or retract into its body.
    • Opportunity 1: After an arm swipe, the eye is often briefly exposed. Fire 1-2 Missiles quickly.
    • Opportunity 2: When it's charging an energy blast, the eye might be open. This is a good chance to get a few shots in.
    • Opportunity 3: During or immediately after it spawns smaller Core-X, the eye can be vulnerable.
  • Charge Shots: While not as effective as Missiles, a fully charged Plasma Beam shot can deal a small amount of damage and is better than nothing if you're out of Missiles or waiting for an opening.
  • Missile Management: Absorb any spawned Core-X enemies to replenish your Missiles and Energy. This is critical for sustaining the fight. Don't be afraid to take a hit or two if it means absorbing a Core-X that will give you back valuable resources.

Final Blow

Once you've dealt enough damage, the Mega Core-X will begin to flicker and eventually explode, leaving behind a large, glowing Core-X. This is the final Core-X you need to absorb to regain your full power and finish the game. Approach it and absorb it to trigger the ending sequence.
