Ridley

The infamous Space Pirate general, Ridley, returns as an X-Parasite mimic in Metroid Fusion. This battle is a true test of your acquired abilities and reflexes. Be prepared for a fast-paced, aggressive encounter.

Preparation is Key

Before engaging Ridley, ensure you are fully stocked and have the necessary upgrades. This fight can drain your resources quickly.

  • Energy Tanks: Aim for at least 8-10 Energy Tanks. More is always better.
  • Missile Expansions: Max out your Missile capacity. You'll need a lot of them.
  • Power Bombs: While not directly used for damage against Ridley, having a full stock of Power Bombs can be useful for clearing the room of smaller enemies if you get overwhelmed in other areas before this fight.
  • Charge Beam: Essential for dealing consistent damage.
  • Screw Attack: While not strictly necessary for damage, it provides invincibility during jumps, which can be a lifesaver for dodging Ridley's attacks.

Battle Strategy

Ridley's X-Parasite form retains many of his classic attack patterns but with an X-Parasite twist. The key to victory lies in consistent damage output and masterful dodging.

Phase 1: Aerial Assault

Ridley will primarily fly around the top of the arena, swooping down occasionally. His main attacks in this phase are:

  • Fireballs: He'll spit a stream of fireballs directly at you. These are relatively easy to dodge by moving left or right, or by using a short jump.
  • Tail Swipe: Ridley will sometimes dive low and attempt to swipe you with his tail. This attack has a decent wind-up, giving you a small window to jump over it or slide under if you have the Speed Booster.
  • Claw Attack: He may also try to grab you with his claws. This is a quick attack, so stay mobile.

Offensive Strategy: Focus your attacks on Ridley's head. Charged Beam shots are your primary source of damage. Fire a charged shot, then immediately follow up with 3-5 Missiles. Repeat this pattern. When Ridley is flying high, jump and fire upwards. When he swoops low, aim horizontally. Don't be afraid to use your Screw Attack to get in close for a few quick Missile hits if you have the opportunity, as it will make you invincible during the spin.

Phase 2: Grounded Aggression

As you deal more damage, Ridley will start spending more time on the ground, becoming more aggressive. His attacks will become faster and more varied.

  • Ground Pound: Ridley will slam down, creating a shockwave. Jump over this shockwave.
  • Charging Attack: He will charge across the screen. This is a good opportunity to slide under him if you have the Speed Booster, or jump over him with a Screw Attack.
  • Flamethrower: Ridley will unleash a continuous stream of fire across the ground. This is a dangerous attack. Get to the opposite side of the screen and jump over the flames, or use the Screw Attack to pass through them if you're caught close.

Offensive Strategy: Maintain the Charged Beam + Missile combo. When Ridley is on the ground, aim for his head. If he charges, try to get behind him and unleash a barrage of Missiles. The Screw Attack is incredibly useful in this phase for evading his ground attacks and getting in close for damage. If you have the Space Jump, use it to stay airborne and above his attacks as much as possible.

General Tips for Success

  • Stay Mobile: The arena is large enough to allow for constant movement. Never stand still.
  • Conserve Missiles (Initially): While you need a lot of Missiles, don't just spam them. Use them strategically after a Charged Beam shot for maximum impact.
  • Prioritize Dodging: It's better to take a moment to dodge an attack than to take heavy damage trying to land one more hit.
  • Collect X-Parasites: After taking damage, Ridley will occasionally release X-Parasites. Absorb these to regain health and Missiles. This is crucial for endurance.
  • Learn Patterns: Ridley's attacks are predictable once you've seen them a few times. Pay attention to his wind-up animations.

With persistence and careful execution of these strategies, the X-Parasite Ridley will fall, granting you access to the next critical area of the B.S.L. research station.
