Serpent
After receiving your new objective from the Main Deck, your next destination is Sector 3 (PYRO). Take the Navigation Room elevator down and proceed to the left. You'll encounter a new type of enemy here, the Fune, which are small, fast-moving, jellyfish-like X-Parasites. A single shot from your Arm Cannon will dispatch them.
Navigating to Sector 3 (PYRO)
Your journey to Sector 3 (PYRO) involves a straightforward path from the Navigation Room. This sector is characterized by high temperatures and lava hazards, so be prepared for environmental damage if you're not careful.
- From the Navigation Room, head left through the door.
- Continue left, past the elevator shaft, until you reach the next room.
- Descend through the floor opening in this room.
- You'll find yourself in a long vertical shaft. Drop all the way down to the bottom.
- At the bottom, head right through the door.
- In this new corridor, continue right until you reach the Sector 3 (PYRO) access point.
- Enter the Sector 3 (PYRO) access room.
- Use the Data Room to download the Sector 3 (PYRO) map data. This is crucial for navigating the area efficiently and identifying key locations.
- Proceed through the door to officially enter Sector 3 (PYRO).
Encountering the Serpent
Upon entering Sector 3 (PYRO), you'll immediately notice the increased temperature and a new environmental hazard: lava. Avoid touching it, as it will deal significant damage to Samus. Your immediate goal is to locate the source of the X Parasite outbreak in this sector, which will lead you directly to the Serpent.
- From the entrance, head right. You'll encounter more Fune and possibly some Core-X Parasites that emerge from defeated enemies. Absorb them to restore health and missiles.
- Continue right, navigating around the lava pits. These pits are often guarded by small, flying enemies called Zebbos, which can be dispatched with a single shot.
- You'll reach a room with a large, dormant creature resembling a snake or eel embedded in the wall. This is the Serpent.
- As you approach, the Serpent will awaken and block your path, initiating a mini-boss encounter.
Serpent Strategy
The Serpent is a stationary mini-boss that guards a crucial pathway in Sector 3 (PYRO). While its attack pattern is straightforward, defeating it requires precise timing and careful evasion. This fight serves as an introduction to mini-boss encounters that test your reaction time and missile management.
Attack Patterns:
- Head Jab: The Serpent will lunge its head forward, attempting to bite Samus. This attack is telegraphed by a slight pull-back before the lunge.
- Energy Orb: It will occasionally spit out a slow-moving energy orb that travels across the screen. This orb can be destroyed with a few shots, but it's generally safer to evade.
- Fune Summon: Periodically, the Serpent may summon Fune (small, fast-moving jellyfish-like X-Parasites) to distract Samus. These should be dealt with quickly to maintain focus on the main target.
Combat Strategy:
- Weak Point: The Serpent's only vulnerable spot is its open mouth. Shots to any other part of its body will be ineffective.
- Timing is Key: Wait for the Serpent to open its mouth. This typically happens during its head jab animation or when it's preparing to spit an energy orb.
- Missile Barrage: Fire Missiles directly into its open mouth. Your Arm Cannon shots will deal minimal damage and are best saved for clearing any Fune that might appear. You will need approximately 8-10 missiles to defeat the Serpent.
- Evasion:
- When the Serpent performs the Head Jab, jump over its head or duck underneath it. The timing for ducking is slightly tighter.
- For the Energy Orb, simply jump over it. If Fune are present, prioritize jumping over the orb and then dealing with the Fune.
- When Fune are summoned, quickly dispatch them with your Arm Cannon to prevent them from interfering with your missile shots or causing unnecessary damage. Absorbing their Core-X will also provide minor health and missile replenishment.
- Patience: This fight is more about timing your shots and avoiding damage than raw firepower. Don't rush, and prioritize avoiding damage. If you take too much damage, retreat slightly to absorb any Fune Core-X or wait for an opportune moment.
- Recommended Loadout: Standard Arm Cannon and Missiles. No special upgrades are required for this fight, but having a decent missile count is beneficial.
After landing several successful Missile hits into its mouth, the Serpent will recoil, its body will flash, and it will eventually dissipate, clearing the path forward. Absorb the Core-X Parasite it leaves behind to regain a significant amount of health and missiles, preparing you for the challenges ahead.
Post-Serpent Progression
With the Serpent defeated, the path to the right is now open. This area leads deeper into Sector 3 (PYRO), where you will encounter new environmental challenges and more aggressive X-Parasites. Be prepared for increased temperatures and more complex platforming over lava pits.
- Proceed through the newly opened pathway to the right.
- You will enter a series of rooms with more lava hazards and new enemy types, such as Mute (small, flying creatures that drop from the ceiling) and Magdolls (stationary, fire-breathing turrets).
- Your next objective will be to locate the Sector 3 (PYRO) Data Room to download further map data and receive new instructions from the Main Deck.
- Keep an eye out for hidden missile expansions and energy tanks in this sector, as they will be crucial for your continued survival.
