Game Mechanics
Welcome to the Game Mechanics section! Here, we'll delve into the core systems that govern your journey through the Biologic Space Laboratories (BSL) research station. Understanding these mechanics is crucial for survival and efficient progression as you battle the X Parasite.
Samus's Abilities & Upgrades
Samus Aran, in her Fusion Suit, possesses a unique set of abilities, some inherited from her previous power suit and others gained through absorbing X Parasites. Mastering these is key to navigating the BSL station and defeating its formidable inhabitants.
Movement & Basic Actions
- Run: Hold the B button while moving to increase Samus's speed. Essential for clearing gaps and escaping danger.
- Jump: Press the A button. The longer you hold it, the higher Samus jumps.
- Crouch: Press Down on the D-Pad. Useful for avoiding certain attacks and entering small passages.
- Morph Ball: Press Down on the D-Pad while crouching to transform into a Morph Ball. This allows Samus to roll through narrow tunnels. You'll regain this ability early in Sector 1 (Main Deck), after defeating the first Core-X.
- Wall Jump: While jumping, press against a wall and then quickly press the opposite direction on the D-Pad and the A button simultaneously. This allows Samus to scale vertical shafts. You'll gain this ability after absorbing the first Core-X in Sector 1 (Main Deck).
- Hang: Samus can grab ledges by jumping towards them. Press Up on the D-Pad to climb up.
Combat & Weaponry
- Arm Cannon: Samus's primary weapon. Press the B button to fire.
- Charge Beam: Hold the B button to charge a more powerful shot. This ability is restored after absorbing the first Core-X in Sector 1 (Main Deck).
- Missiles: Press R + B to fire a Missile. Missiles are crucial for opening Missile Blocks and damaging bosses. You'll acquire your first Missile Tank in Sector 1 (Main Deck) after defeating the first Core-X.
- Diffusion Missile: A powerful upgrade that causes Missiles to explode with a wider radius, damaging multiple enemies or blocks. Acquired after defeating the SA-X in Sector 2 (TRO).
- Power Bombs: Devastating explosives that clear all enemies and certain blocks on screen. Press L + B to deploy. You'll obtain your first Power Bomb Tank in Sector 4 (AQA) after defeating the Giant Jellyfish.
Suit Upgrades
Throughout your journey, you'll recover various suit upgrades that enhance Samus's capabilities. These are often found after defeating bosses or absorbing specific Core-X Parasites.
- High Jump: Increases Samus's jump height, allowing access to previously unreachable areas. Acquired after defeating the Arachnus X in Sector 4 (AQA).
- Speed Booster: Allows Samus to run at incredible speeds, breaking through Speed Booster Blocks and performing Shinesparks. Acquired after defeating the Security Robot in Sector 3 (PYR).
- Space Jump: Grants Samus the ability to perform infinite jumps in the air, essential for traversing large gaps and vertical shafts. Acquired after defeating the SA-X in Sector 5 (ARC).
- Screw Attack: While performing a Space Jump, Samus becomes invulnerable and damages enemies she touches. Acquired after defeating the Neo Ridley X in Sector 6 (WST).
- Varia Suit: Reduces damage taken from environmental hazards and enemy attacks. Acquired after defeating the SA-X in Sector 6 (WST).
- Gravity Suit: Allows Samus to move freely underwater and provides further damage reduction. Acquired after defeating the SA-X in Sector 5 (ARC).
Energy & Health Management
Samus's health is represented by the Energy Tank system. Each tank holds 99 units of energy. When an Energy Tank is depleted, the next one automatically activates.
Restoring Energy
- Energy Pickups: Small green spheres dropped by defeated enemies. Each restores a small amount of energy.
- Energy Tanks: Large green spheres that fully restore one Energy Tank. These are rare and strategically placed.
- Recharge Stations: Found in Navigation Rooms and specific save rooms. These fully restore all Energy Tanks and Missiles.
Expanding Energy
To increase your maximum health, you must find and absorb Energy Tanks. Each Energy Tank found adds 99 units to your total capacity. There are a total of 10 Energy Tanks to discover throughout the BSL station. Keep an eye out for hidden passages and breakable blocks!
Missile & Power Bomb Management
Missiles and Power Bombs are limited resources. Efficient use and replenishment are vital.
Restoring Ammo
- Missile Pickups: Small red spheres dropped by defeated enemies. Each restores one Missile.
- Power Bomb Pickups: Small yellow spheres dropped by defeated enemies. Each restores one Power Bomb.
- Recharge Stations: Fully restore all Missiles and Power Bombs.
Expanding Ammo
To increase your maximum Missile and Power Bomb capacity, you must find Missile Tanks and Power Bomb Tanks.
- Missile Tanks: Each Missile Tank adds 5 Missiles to your maximum capacity. There are numerous Missile Tanks scattered across the BSL station.
- Power Bomb Tanks: Each Power Bomb Tank adds 1 Power Bomb to your maximum capacity. These are rarer than Missile Tanks but equally important.
Environmental Hazards & Block Types
The BSL station is fraught with dangers beyond just the X Parasites. Understanding the environment is key to progression.
Environmental Hazards
- Hot Rooms (Sector 3 - PYR): These rooms deal continuous damage to Samus unless she has the Varia Suit.
- Cold Rooms (Sector 5 - ARC): These rooms deal continuous damage to Samus unless she has the Varia Suit.
- Water (Sector 4 - AQA): Movement is significantly slowed underwater until the Gravity Suit is acquired.
- Spikes/Lava: Instant death or heavy damage. Avoid at all costs.
Block Types
Many areas are blocked by various types of destructible blocks. Knowing how to break them is essential for exploration.
- Regular Blocks: Can be destroyed by a single shot from the Arm Cannon.
- Missile Blocks: Marked with a missile icon. Require a Missile to destroy.
- Power Bomb Blocks: Marked with a power bomb icon. Require a Power Bomb to destroy.
- Speed Booster Blocks: Marked with a series of arrows. Require Samus to be in Speed Booster mode to break through.
- Bomb Blocks (Morph Ball): Small, often hidden blocks that can only be destroyed by a Morph Ball Bomb.
- Crumble Blocks: Blocks that disappear shortly after Samus steps on them. Plan your movements carefully.
- Invisible Blocks: Often hidden in walls or ceilings. Fire your Arm Cannon to reveal them.
Navigation & Map System
The BSL station is a sprawling complex. The map system is your best friend for staying oriented and finding your next objective.
- Navigation Rooms: These rooms contain a computer terminal that provides your next objective and updates your map. They also serve as Recharge Stations.
- Save Rooms: Allow you to save your progress. Always save before tackling a boss or a particularly challenging area.
- Map Rooms: These rooms reveal a portion of the map for the current sector. Always seek these out when entering a new area.
- Data Rooms: Special rooms where Samus downloads new abilities or information.
- Elevators: Connect different sectors of the BSL station.
- Hazard Shields: Colored barriers that block access to certain areas until a specific condition is met (e.g., defeating a boss, acquiring an upgrade).
The X Parasite & Core-X
The X Parasite is the central antagonist of Metroid Fusion. Understanding its mechanics is crucial for survival.
- X Parasites: After defeating an enemy, it will release one or more X Parasites. These come in different colors:
- Yellow X: Restores energy.
- Red X: Restores Missiles.
- Green X: Restores Power Bombs.
- Blue X: Grants temporary invincibility.
- Core-X: These are larger, more powerful X Parasites released after defeating a boss. Absorbing a Core-X often grants Samus a significant ability upgrade. They are typically invulnerable to regular attacks and must be defeated by firing a charged shot or missile into their core when it's exposed.
