Item Locations
Exploring SR388 means finding crucial upgrades to aid Samus in her mission. This section details the locations and acquisition strategies for all major items. Remember, some items require previously acquired abilities to reach them.
Energy Tanks
Energy Tanks increase Samus's maximum health, allowing her to withstand more damage. There are 10 in total to find:
- Energy Tank 1 (Area 1): After descending into the first major cavern from the surface, head right. You'll encounter a vertical shaft with a small alcove on the left. Use a Missile to destroy the block blocking the path to this tank.
- Energy Tank 2 (Area 2): In the area with the first Alpha Metroid encounter, after defeating it, proceed right through the newly opened path. This tank is in plain sight.
- Energy Tank 3 (Area 3): Within the lava-filled section, navigate carefully using the Spider Ball. This tank is often found by exploring dead-end paths that require precise Spider Ball maneuvers over lava. Look for a small chamber accessible from a vertical shaft.
- Energy Tank 4 (Area 4): After acquiring the Space Jump, return to the large, open vertical shaft near the beginning of Area 4. Use your new jumping ability to reach a high platform on the left side, where this tank awaits.
- Energy Tank 5 (Area 5): In the labyrinthine corridors of Area 5, search for a hidden passage behind a destructible block (often requiring a Power Bomb) in a room filled with flying enemies.
- Energy Tank 6 (Area 6): Deep within the watery sections, this tank is often found by exploring submerged tunnels. Look for a path that requires the Screw Attack to clear a series of blocks.
- Energy Tank 7 (Area 7): In the desolate, rocky landscapes of Area 7, this tank is typically hidden behind a series of destructible blocks in a room with several enemies. A well-placed Power Bomb can reveal its location.
- Energy Tank 8 (Area 8): Near the final stages of the game, this tank is often found in a room with a large number of enemies, requiring Samus to clear the area before safely collecting it.
- Energy Tank 9 (Area 9): In the final descent towards the Queen Metroid, keep an eye out for a hidden alcove or a path requiring the Screw Attack to break through a wall.
- Energy Tank 10 (Area 9): Very close to the Queen Metroid's lair, this final tank is usually in a side passage that might be easily missed if you're rushing to the final boss.
Missile Expansions
Missile Expansions increase your missile capacity by 5. There are numerous expansions throughout SR388, vital for defeating Metroids and bosses.
- Missile Expansion 1 (Area 1): From the starting point, head right and down. In the first large room with enemies, look for a small alcove on the left wall, accessible by destroying a block with a Missile.
- Missile Expansion 2 (Area 1): After acquiring the Morph Ball, return to the initial vertical shaft. There's a small crawlspace on the right side near the top that leads to this expansion.
- Missile Expansion 3 (Area 2): In the room directly above the first Alpha Metroid encounter, use the Morph Ball to navigate a narrow passage to the right.
- Missile Expansion 4 (Area 2): After defeating the first Alpha Metroid, proceed further right. This expansion is in a small, easily overlooked chamber.
- Missile Expansion 5 (Area 3): In the lava-filled area, after acquiring the Spider Ball, use it to climb a vertical shaft. At the top, there's a hidden passage to the left.
- Missile Expansion 6 (Area 3): Within the same lava area, look for a destructible floor block (use a Power Bomb if you have it, or shoot extensively) that leads to a lower chamber.
- Missile Expansion 7 (Area 4): After obtaining the Space Jump, revisit the large vertical shaft leading to the lower parts of Area 4. There's a high-up platform on the right that was previously unreachable.
- Missile Expansion 8 (Area 4): In the area with the first Gamma Metroid, explore the upper ledges. One of them hides this expansion behind a regular block.
- Missile Expansion 9 (Area 5): In the complex corridors of Area 5, look for a room with a series of moving platforms. This expansion is often found in a hidden alcove at the top of the room.
- Missile Expansion 10 (Area 5): After defeating the first Zeta Metroid, backtrack slightly and look for a newly opened path or a destructible wall in the vicinity.
- Missile Expansion 11 (Area 6): In the underwater sections, after acquiring the Screw Attack, destroy a series of blocks in a horizontal passage to reveal this expansion.
- Missile Expansion 12 (Area 6): Within a large, open underwater chamber, this expansion is often found on a high ledge that requires precise Space Jump maneuvers.
- Missile Expansion 13 (Area 7): In the rocky, desolate area, look for a room with several destructible floor blocks. One of them leads to a hidden chamber below.
- Missile Expansion 14 (Area 7): After defeating the first Omega Metroid, explore the surrounding rooms for a path that opens up, revealing this expansion.
- Missile Expansion 15 (Area 8): In the deep caverns of Area 8, this expansion is often found in a room with a complex layout, requiring the Spider Ball to navigate narrow passages.
- Missile Expansion 16 (Area 8): Near the final Metroid encounters in this area, look for a hidden passage behind a Power Bomb block.
- Missile Expansion 17 (Area 9): In the final descent, this expansion is often placed in a challenging-to-reach spot, requiring a combination of abilities like Space Jump and Screw Attack.
- Missile Expansion 18 (Area 9): Very close to the Queen Metroid's lair, this expansion is usually in a side path that might be easily overlooked in the excitement.
Power Bomb Expansions
Power Bomb Expansions increase your Power Bomb capacity by 2. These powerful explosives are essential for clearing specific blocks and revealing hidden paths.
- Power Bomb Expansion 1 (Area 3): After acquiring the Power Bomb, return to the lava-filled area. There's a section with a series of Power Bomb blocks that, once cleared, lead to this expansion.
- Power Bomb Expansion 2 (Area 4): In the large vertical shaft that connects to the lower parts of Area 4, look for a Power Bomb block on the right wall, high up, accessible with Space Jump.
- Power Bomb Expansion 3 (Area 5): In a room with several destructible blocks, use a Power Bomb to reveal a hidden passage leading to this expansion.
- Power Bomb Expansion 4 (Area 6): Within the underwater sections, there's a Power Bomb block on the floor of a large chamber. Destroy it to access a lower area with the expansion.
- Power Bomb Expansion 5 (Area 7): In the desolate, rocky area, look for a room with a seemingly solid wall. A Power Bomb will reveal a hidden path to this expansion.
- Power Bomb Expansion 6 (Area 8): Deep within the caverns, this expansion is often found behind a series of Power Bomb blocks in a complex room.
Beam Upgrades
- Ice Beam (Area 2): After defeating the first Alpha Metroid, proceed right through the newly opened path. The Ice Beam is located in the next major room, often guarded by enemies. This beam is crucial for freezing Metroids.
