Unearthing Missile Expansions
Missiles are Samus Aran's primary offensive tool against the dangerous Metroids of SR388. Increasing your missile capacity is paramount to survival and efficient Metroid eradication. These expansions are often hidden in challenging locations, requiring precise platforming and sometimes specific abilities to reach.
Missile Expansions are typically found in isolated chambers or hidden alcoves. They are visually represented as a missile icon within a block. To acquire one, you must destroy the block containing it. This usually requires a standard missile shot, but some might be guarded by enemies or require a Power Bomb to reveal.
General Acquisition Strategy:
- Thorough Exploration: Never assume an area is fully explored. Revisit locations after acquiring new abilities, as they often unlock access to previously unreachable missile expansions.
- Listen for Audio Cues: Sometimes, the game provides subtle audio cues when you are near a hidden item, though this is less pronounced in Metroid II compared to later titles.
- Observe Environmental Details: Look for any unusual block formations or areas that seem out of place. These are often indicators of hidden passages leading to upgrades.
- Utilize the Map: While the map doesn't explicitly mark missile locations, it helps you keep track of areas you've visited and those you haven't. If you're stuck, revisiting unexplored sections of the map is a good strategy.
- Power Bomb Usage: Certain Missile Expansions are hidden behind destructible walls that only Power Bombs can clear. Always keep a stock of Power Bombs for exploration.
The number of Missile Expansions available is finite, and collecting them all is crucial for facing the later, more powerful Metroid forms. Prioritize exploring areas that seem difficult to access or those that you haven't thoroughly searched. The reward for your perseverance will be a sificantly increased missile payload, making your hunt for the Metroids far more manageable.
Remember that some Missile Expansions are located in areas that are also home to Metroid nests. Clearing the Metroids in these sectors can sometimes alter the environment, potentially opening new routes to these valuable upgrades.
