Boss: Emperor Ing
The Emperor Ing is the final boss of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, a multi-stage encounter that will test all of Samus's abilities. Come prepared with a full complement of Energy Tanks and Missile Expansions. This guide will break down each phase to ensure your victory.
Phase 1: Tentacle Terror
In this initial phase, the Emperor Ing's core is protected by a series of powerful tentacles. Your primary goal is to destroy these tentacles to expose its vulnerable eye.
- Recommended Loadout: For this phase, the Annihilator Beam is your primary weapon for dealing with the tentacles, and the Light Beam for the exposed eye. Ensure you have a healthy supply of Missiles.
- Targeting the Tentacles: Focus your fire on the Emperor Ing's tentacles. While the Power Beam can damage them, the Annihilator Beam is highly recommended due to its homing capabilities and high damage output against Ing creatures. This allows you to maintain distance and focus on dodging while your shots find their mark.
- Ammo Management: Using the Annihilator Beam has the added benefit of potentially dropping both Light and Dark Beam ammo, helping you replenish your reserves during the fight. Don't be overly conservative with your shots; keeping the pressure on is key.
- Dodge and Weave: The tentacles will perform various sweeping attacks and slam attacks. Utilize your Space Jump and strafing to avoid these. Keep a medium distance to give yourself more reaction time.
- Exposing the Eye: Once enough tentacles are destroyed, the Emperor Ing's central eye will be revealed. This is your window of opportunity for significant damage.
- Attacking the Eye:
- Charged Light Shots: Your most reliable source of damage against the exposed eye will be charged shots from the Light Beam. Aim precisely, as the eye has partial shielding, and shots that hit the covering will do no damage.
- Missile Barrage: If you have a good opening and a surplus of Missiles, a volley of 3-5 Missiles directly into the exposed eye can deal substantial damage.
- Sonic Boom (High Risk/High Reward): A single Sonic Boom (formed by combining a charged Annihilator Beam shot with a Missile) can inflict massive damage, potentially decimating a large portion of the Emperor Ing's health bar in this phase. However, this is a risky maneuver due to the high ammo cost (10 Missiles per shot) and the brief window of vulnerability. Only attempt if you are confident in your aim and have ample Missile reserves.
- Repeat: The Emperor Ing will regenerate its tentacles. Continue to destroy them and attack the exposed eye until the phase transitions. This phase requires patience and consistent damage output.
Phase 2: Ing Core
After dealing enough damage in the first phase, the Emperor Ing will shed its outer shell, revealing its true form: the Ing Core. This phase takes place in a dark, enclosed arena, emphasizing speed and evasion.
- Recommended Loadout: The Light Beam is paramount here due to the Ing Core's extreme vulnerability to Light energy. Keep your Missiles ready for strategic use.
- Light Beam is Key: The Ing Core is highly vulnerable to the Light Beam. Equip it and prepare for a fast-paced fight. Continuously fire charged Light Beam shots at the Ing Core. It will move rapidly around the arena, so maintaining a lock-on (if possible) or leading your shots is crucial.
- Dodge and Weave: The Ing Core will launch various attacks, including rapid energy projectiles, sweeping laser beams, and physical charges. Utilize your Space Jump and Boost Ball to avoid taking damage. Constant movement is your best defense.
- Energy Projectiles: These are often fired in bursts. Strafe continuously to avoid them.
- Sweeping Laser: The core will sometimes emit a wide laser beam that sweeps across the arena. Double-jump over it or Boost Ball under it if you're close enough to the ground.
- Charge Attack: The core will occasionally charge directly at Samus. Use a well-timed Space Jump or Boost Ball dodge to evade.
- Dark World Portals and Ing Swarms: The Ing Core may occasionally open portals to the Dark World, summoning smaller Ing creatures (Warrior Ing, Hunter Ing). Eliminate these quickly with the Light Beam to prevent them from overwhelming you and to collect potential energy or missile drops. Prioritize the core, but don't let the smaller Ing distract you too much.
- Missile Barrage (Optional, but Effective): If you have a surplus of Missiles, they can be very effective against the Ing Core, especially when it's stationary for a brief moment after an attack or when it's recovering from a charge. A few well-placed Missiles can significantly shorten this phase.
- Resource Management: Keep an eye on your Energy Tanks. If you take too much damage, consider using a Power Bomb to clear the smaller Ing and potentially get some energy drops, though Power Bombs are generally better saved for the next phase if you're struggling.
Phase 3: Dark Samus
The final stage of the Emperor Ing battle sees its essence transfer into a familiar, corrupted form: Dark Samus. This is a direct confrontation against your doppelganger, a true test of your combat skills.
- Recommended Loadout: The Light Beam remains your weapon of choice, as Dark Samus is highly susceptible to Light energy. Keep your Missiles ready for burst damage.
- Aggressive Offense: Dark Samus is relentless and highly mobile. You need to be equally aggressive. Continuously fire charged Light Beam shots while strafing and dodging. Never stand still.
- Dark Samus's Attacks and Counter-Strategies:
- Phazon Shots: Dark Samus will fire rapid Phazon projectiles. These are her most common attack. Strafe constantly and use your Space Jump to avoid these.
- Phazon Beam: She may charge up a powerful, wide Phazon Beam. This attack is telegraphed by her glowing intensely and a distinct sound. This gives you a moment to jump or Boost Ball out of the way. If caught, it deals heavy damage.
- Phazon Missile Barrage: Dark Samus can launch a volley of homing Phazon Missiles. These can be difficult to avoid. Focus on dodging by strafing and jumping.
- Dash Attack: Dark Samus will occasionally dash directly towards you, often followed by a melee strike. Use your Space Jump to leap over her or Boost Ball to quickly move aside. A well-timed dodge can leave her vulnerable for a counter-attack.
- Phazon Pillar Summon: Dark Samus might summon pillars of Phazon from the ground. These are relatively easy to avoid by simply moving away from their spawn points.
- Counter-Attacking Windows: After Dark Samus completes a major attack (like the Phazon Beam or a Dash Attack), there's often a brief window where she is vulnerable. Capitalize on these moments with fully charged Light Beam shots.
- Missile Barrage: If you have a good opening and Dark Samus is momentarily stunned or recovering, a volley of 3-5 Missiles can deal significant damage. Don't waste them on her while she's highly mobile.
- Stay Mobile: The absolute key to surviving this phase is constant movement. Never stand still. Utilize the entire arena to your advantage.
- Energy Management: If your energy is critically low, and you have Power Bombs remaining, consider using one. While they don't deal significant damage to Dark Samus, they can clear the screen of any minor Phazon hazards she might have created and potentially drop energy.
With careful execution, mastery of your beam weapons, and persistent dodging, the Emperor Ing and Dark Samus will fall, and Aether will be saved!
