Boss: Quadraxis
Quadraxis is a colossal, Ing-possessed Luminoth war golem and a formidable boss in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. While it is a major antagonist and a significant hurdle, it is not the final boss of the game; that distinction belongs to Emperor Ing. This multi-phase battle is a true test of Samus's combat prowess, demanding precision, quick reflexes, and a comprehensive understanding of her arsenal. Be prepared for a challenging fight, especially on Hard mode.
Preparation & Recommended Loadout
Before entering the Quadraxis battle in the Great Temple, ensure you are fully equipped and stocked. This fight is a marathon, not a sprint.
- Energy Tanks: Maximize your Energy Tanks. At least 7-8 are highly recommended for a comfortable fight.
- Missile Expansion: Have as many Missile Expansions as possible. Super Missiles are critical in multiple phases.
- Beam Combos: Ensure you have the Light Beam, Dark Beam, and their respective combos (Lightburst, Darkburst).
- Suit Upgrades: The Gravity Boost and Screw Attack are invaluable for mobility and evasion.
- Scan Visor: Always scan bosses at the start of each phase to update your Logbook and reveal potential weaknesses.
Phase 1: Leg Destruction
The initial phase focuses on crippling Quadraxis's mobility. Your primary targets are its glowing blue kneecaps.
- Targeting: Quadraxis has eight massive legs. Only specific kneecaps will flash a vibrant blue, indicating their vulnerability. You must constantly move and use your Lock-On to identify these targets.
- Weapon of Choice: The Super Missile is your most effective weapon here. A single, well-aimed Super Missile will instantly destroy a vulnerable kneecap.
- Strategy:
- Maintain Distance & Evasion: Keep a significant distance from Quadraxis. Strafe constantly to avoid its various attacks, which include devastating ground shockwaves (indicated by a blue ripple on the floor) and rapid-fire energy blasts from its head.
- Identify & Strike: Lock on to a flashing blue kneecap and fire a Super Missile. Don't waste missiles on non-flashing kneecaps.
- Shockwave Counter: After destroying a kneecap, Quadraxis will often unleash a powerful shockwave attack. Jump over these or use the Screw Attack for temporary invincibility.
- Energy/Ammo Resupply Tactic: If you are low on health or missiles, look for Quadraxis's glowing red feet. Boost Ball under a glowing red foot to destroy it. This will often yield an Ultra Energy or Missile Ammo. Be aware that these feet regenerate after you destroy a kneecap, so use this tactic strategically when needed, but prioritize kneecap destruction.
- Progression: Continue this process until all eight kneecaps are destroyed. Quadraxis will then collapse, initiating the next phase.
Phase 2: Head Detachment & Cable Severing
With its legs incapacitated, Quadraxis's massive head will detach and begin to hover, protected by an impervious energy shield.
- Targeting: The head's shield is invulnerable to most attacks. Your objective is to target the four glowing, segmented cables that link the detached head to the main body.
- Weapon of Choice: Charged Light Beam shots are highly effective against these cables. The Light Beam's rapid fire can also be useful for sustained damage.
- Strategy:
- Evasive Maneuvers: The detached head will move erratically around the arena, firing various energy projectiles and occasionally sweeping lasers. Stay highly mobile, utilizing your Space Jump and Screw Attack to evade incoming attacks.
- Focus Fire: Charge your Light Beam and fire at the connecting cables. Each cable requires multiple hits to sever. Focus on one cable at a time until it's destroyed before moving to the next.
- Environmental Awareness: Use the pillars and structures in the arena for temporary cover if you need to recharge your beam or assess the situation, but don't rely on them too heavily as they can be destroyed.
- Progression: Once all four cables are destroyed, the head will become fully separated from the body and fall to the ground, temporarily vulnerable.
Phase 3: Vulnerable Head Core Assault
The separated head is now on the ground, exposing its vulnerable core. This is your window for significant damage.
- Targeting: The exposed, glowing core located within Quadraxis's fallen head is your primary target.
- Weapon of Choice: Unload a concentrated volley of Super Missiles into the core.
- Strategy:
- Rapid Damage: As soon as the head falls, quickly switch to your Super Missiles. Lock on to the core and unleash as many Super Missiles as you can into it before the head reactivates. The faster you are, the more damage you'll inflict in this brief window.
- Beam Follow-up: If you run out of Super Missiles or need to conserve them, switch to charged Power Beam shots or charged Light Beam shots for additional damage.
- Repeat Cycle: After taking significant damage, the head will reactivate and re-attach to the body, and the cycle will repeat from Phase 2 (head detachment). You will likely need to repeat Phases 2 and 3 several times to fully destroy Quadraxis's head. Each time, the head may exhibit slightly more aggressive attack patterns.
Phase 4: Antenna Destruction
Once the head is completely destroyed, the main body of Quadraxis will become active again, but with a new, critical vulnerability: its central antenna.
- Targeting: The large, glowing antenna extending from the top of Quadraxis's main body. This is a delicate component that controls its powerful attacks.
- Weapon of Choice: The Dark Beam and the Darkburst combo are absolutely crucial here.
- Strategy:
- Evasion of Laser: Quadraxis will now primarily use its devastating, sweeping laser attack. This laser can inflict heavy damage. Stay on the move, using your Space Jump and Screw Attack to avoid its path. The arena's environment can offer minimal cover, but constant movement is key.
- Dark Beam Stun: Charge your Dark Beam and fire at the antenna. The Dark Beam will temporarily freeze the antenna's rotation and stun it, making it vulnerable.
- Darkburst Finisher: While the antenna is frozen by the Dark Beam, quickly switch to your Darkburst combo and fire it directly at the antenna. The Darkburst will create a localized dark vortex, inflicting significant damage to the antenna.
- Repeat & Destroy: You'll need to repeat this Dark Beam/Darkburst combo multiple times to fully destroy the antenna. Be patient and prioritize evasion between your attacks.
Phase 5: Final Core Assault
With the antenna destroyed, Quadraxis will be severely weakened, exposing its final, critical core. This is the final push.
- Targeting: The now exposed, pulsating, glowing core located within Quadraxis's main body.
- Weapon of Choice: Unleash all remaining Super Missiles and charged Power Beam shots.
- Strategy:
- Death Throes: Quadraxis will be in its death throes, but it is still capable of firing its remaining attacks, albeit less frequently and with less precision. Continue to dodge and stay mobile.
- Missile Barrage: Lock on to the core and fire every Super Missile you have left. This is the time to empty your missile reserves.
- Beam Finisher: Once your Super Missiles are depleted, switch to charged Power Beam shots. The Power Beam, especially when charged, can still inflict respectable damage.
- Relentless Assault: Continue the assault without pause. Quadraxis will eventually explode in a spectacular fashion, marking your hard-earned victory.
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Missile Management: Super Missiles are precious. Use them only when explicitly recommended for maximum impact.
- Evasion is Key: Quadraxis has powerful attacks. Mastering evasion and movement is more important than raw damage output in many phases.
- Scan Visor: Always scan Quadraxis at the beginning of each phase to ensure you have the latest tactical data and Logbook entries.
- Health & Ammo: Don't be afraid to use the Boost Ball tactic on the red feet in Phase 1 if you're critically low on health or missiles.
- Patience: This is a long, multi-stage battle. Don't rush. Learn Quadraxis's patterns and exploit its vulnerabilities methodically.
