Beam Combos & Charge Attacks
Mastering Samus's Beam Combos and Charge Attacks is crucial for efficient combat and puzzle-solving in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. These powerful techniques consume Missiles but deliver devastating damage or unique effects. Always consider your Missile count before unleashing a combo, especially against tougher foes or when exploring new areas.
Charge Attacks
Each Beam type (Power, Dark, Light, Annihilator) has a distinct Charge Attack. To execute, hold down the 'R' button (or equivalent charge beam button) until your arm cannon glows, then release. These are often more powerful than standard shots and can trigger environmental effects or stun enemies.
- Power Beam Charge: A basic charged shot, useful for moderate damage and opening standard Beam Doors.
- Dark Beam Charge: Fires a slow-moving, high-damage projectile that can freeze certain enemies or activate Dark-aligned mechanisms. Essential for navigating Dark Aether.
- Light Beam Charge: Unleashes a rapid burst of light energy, effective against Dark Aether creatures and for powering Light-aligned devices. Crucial for restoring Light Crystals.
- Annihilator Beam Charge: The ultimate charged shot, combining Dark and Light energy for massive damage. It can also activate both Dark and Light mechanisms simultaneously.
Beam Combos
Beam Combos are activated by charging a specific Beam and then pressing the 'Y' button (or Missile button) before releasing the charge. Each combo consumes a set amount of Missiles but offers unparalleled offensive power or utility.
Dark Beam Combos
The Dark Beam offers two potent combos:
- Darkburst:
- Requirement: Dark Beam + Super Missile upgrade.
- Activation: Charge Dark Beam, then press 'Y' before releasing.
- Missile Cost: 5 Missiles.
- Effect: Fires a dark energy sphere that creates a miniature singularity, pulling in and devastating enemies within its radius. Extremely effective against groups of smaller foes or stationary targets.
- Strategy: Use in tight corridors in the Agon Wastes or Torvus Bog to clear out swarms of Inglets or other weak enemies.
- Darkmoor:
- Requirement: Dark Beam + Seeker Missile upgrade.
- Activation: Charge Dark Beam, then press 'Y' before releasing.
- Missile Cost: 5 Missiles.
- Effect: Launches a volley of five homing dark projectiles. Each projectile seeks out a different target or multiple projectiles can converge on a single, locked-on enemy.
- Strategy: Excellent for engaging multiple airborne enemies like Warrior Ing or Shriekbats in the Sanctuary Fortress. Also useful for quickly dispatching a single, resilient foe by locking on and firing all five into them.
Light Beam Combos
The Light Beam also features two powerful combos:
- Lightburst:
- Requirement: Light Beam + Super Missile upgrade.
- Activation: Charge Light Beam, then press 'Y' before releasing.
- Missile Cost: 5 Missiles.
- Effect: Unleashes a concentrated blast of light energy that pierces through multiple enemies. Highly effective against enemies weak to light or those lined up.
- Strategy: Ideal for clearing out lines of Ing creatures or breaking through enemy shields. Particularly useful in the Dark Aether areas where Ing are prevalent.
- Lightmoor:
- Requirement: Light Beam + Seeker Missile upgrade.
- Activation: Charge Light Beam, then press 'Y' before releasing.
- Missile Cost: 5 Missiles.
- Effect: Fires five homing light projectiles, similar to the Darkmoor but with light properties.
- Strategy: Best used against multiple Dark Aether creatures or to focus fire on a single, tough Ing. The homing capability makes it reliable even against fast-moving targets.
Annihilator Beam Combo
The Annihilator Beam, being the most powerful, has one devastating combo:
- Annihilator Combo:
- Requirement: Annihilator Beam + Super Missile upgrade.
- Activation: Charge Annihilator Beam, then press 'Y' before releasing.
- Missile Cost: 10 Missiles.
- Effect: Fires a massive, highly damaging projectile that deals both Dark and Light damage. It also has a significant area-of-effect upon impact.
- Strategy: Reserve this for boss battles, mini-bosses, or extremely tough elite enemies. Its high Missile cost means it should be used strategically. The Annihilator Combo is particularly effective against the final bosses and heavily armored Ing forms.
Remember to collect Missile Expansions to increase your maximum Missile capacity, allowing for more frequent use of these powerful attacks. Prioritize these upgrades, especially in the early to mid-game, to gain a significant combat advantage.
