Walkthrough: Dark Aether
Welcome, bounty hunter, to the treacherous realm of Dark Aether! This dimension is a twisted, hostile mirror of Aether, teeming with Phazon-corrupted creatures and environmental hazards. Survival here depends on quick reflexes, strategic use of your Light Suit, and careful management of your energy. Always prioritize finding Light Crystals and Light Beacons to recharge your energy and provide safe havens from the corrosive atmosphere. Remember, the Dark Beam is generally more effective against Dark Aether enemies, often freezing or slowing them, making them easier targets.
Entering Dark Aether: Agon Wastes
Your first foray into Dark Aether will be through the Portal Site in Light Agon Wastes. Be prepared for immediate resistance and the constant drain on your energy.
- Initial Objective: Locate the first Dark Temple Key.
- Upon entering, you'll find yourself in the Dark Agon Wastes. The air here is toxic; your energy will constantly drain unless you are within a Light Beacon's radius or wearing the Light Suit (which you won't have yet). Seek out Light Crystals immediately.
- Proceed through the Dark Agon Temple. Be wary of the Ing and Dark Splinters. While your Power Beam works, the Dark Beam is significantly more effective, often freezing these enemies, allowing for easy follow-up attacks.
- Navigate to the Judgment Pit. This area is often patrolled by Dark Pirates. Utilize your Scan Visor to identify weak points and exploit them. The Dark Beam can slow them, making headshots easier.
- Item Acquisition: Energy Tank
- Location: Trial Grounds.
- Puzzle: In the center of the Trial Grounds, you'll find a series of rotating platforms. You need to shoot the targets on the central pillar to align the platforms, creating a path to the Energy Tank. Use your Power Beam for these targets.
- Benefit: This is crucial for extending your survival time in Dark Aether.
- Your path will lead you to the Main Reactor. Here, you'll face your first major encounter with Dark Aether's unique environmental puzzles. Look for a series of platforms that activate when shot with the Power Beam.
- Key Location: First Dark Temple Key
- Location: Storage Depot B.
- Access: Accessible after navigating the Main Reactor.
- Guard: It's often guarded by a particularly aggressive Dark Pirate Commando. Use charged Dark Beam shots to slow it, then follow up with Super Missiles if you have them, or charged Power Beam shots.
Traversing Dark Aether: Torvus Bog
Once you've acquired the first key, your next destination will be the Dark counterpart of Torvus Bog. This area is even more perilous, with submerged sections and powerful Dark creatures.
- Accessing Dark Torvus: Return to a portal in Agon Wastes (e.g., Portal Site) and then proceed to the Torvus Lagoon in Light Aether to find the portal to Dark Torvus.
- In Dark Torvus Bog, the water itself is corrosive. Minimize your time submerged. Use your Boost Ball to quickly traverse underwater sections when necessary, and always look for Light Crystals or Light Beacons.
- Encounter: You will frequently encounter Dark Bloggs in the submerged areas. These creatures are vulnerable to charged Power Beam shots to their glowing mouths. The Dark Beam can also temporarily stun them, giving you an opening.
- Item Acquisition: Missile Expansion
- Location: Undertemple.
- Challenge: After a series of underwater platforming challenges and navigating through Dark Splinters, you'll find it in a small alcove.
- Benefit: This will be invaluable for dealing with tougher enemies and bosses.
- Objective: Your primary goal here is to activate the power conduits to open new paths. This often involves locating and shooting specific targets with your Power Beam.
- Key Location: Second Dark Temple Key
- Location: Hydrodynamo Station.
- Challenge: This area requires careful navigation of moving platforms and avoiding Dark Splinter Pods.
- Guard: Be prepared for a mini-boss encounter with a Dark Pirate Aerotrooper. Use your Dark Beam to slow it, then target its jetpack with missiles or charged Power Beam shots.
- Boss Battle: Alpha Blogg
- Location: Hydrodynamo Chamber, after acquiring the second key.
- Strategy: Alpha Blogg is a massive, aggressive creature. It charges at you relentlessly. The key is to lure it into the Light Beacon in the center of the arena. When it enters the light, it will be temporarily stunned. Unleash charged Power Beam shots and Missiles into its mouth while it's vulnerable. Repeat until defeated.
- Reward: Defeating Alpha Blogg will often clear the path forward or grant access to a crucial item.
Dark Aether: Sanctuary Fortress
The final stretch of your Dark Aether journey takes you to the mechanical, heavily fortified Sanctuary Fortress. This area introduces more complex environmental puzzles and advanced Dark Aether enemies.
- Accessing Dark Sanctuary: Travel to the Sanctuary Entrance in Light Aether and locate the portal.
- Environmental Hazard: Dark Sanctuary is characterized by its numerous energy fields and laser grids. Many of these can be temporarily disabled by shooting their power conduits with the Power Beam, but some require the Dark Visor to navigate safely by revealing hidden pathways or weak points.
- Enemy Variety: Expect to face a wide array of Dark Mechanoids, including Dark Quadraxis units and Dark War Wasps. The Super Missile is highly effective against these armored foes. Use the Dark Beam to freeze or slow them, then switch to Super Missiles for maximum damage.
- Item Acquisition: Energy Tank
- Location: Main Energy Transfer Station.
- Challenge: After a complex sequence of platforming and enemy encounters, often involving disabling force fields and activating switches, you can secure an Energy Tank.
- Guard: This area is often guarded by multiple Dark Pirate Commandos. Use the Dark Beam to freeze groups, then clear them out with Missiles or Power Beam.
- Puzzle Solving: Many areas, such as the Central Area Transport, will require you to activate switches or manipulate machinery to open pathways. Pay close attention to your Scan Visor for clues, as many puzzles involve shooting specific targets in a sequence or with a particular beam.
- Key Location: Third Dark Temple Key
- Location: Watch Station.
- Challenge: This area is heavily guarded by Dark Ings and requires you to disable several force fields. You'll need to find the power conduits for each force field, often hidden or requiring specific beam types to activate.
- Guard: Be prepared for a challenging fight against a Dark Tallon Metroid. Use the Dark Beam to freeze it, then hit it with Missiles or charged Power Beam shots.
- Boss Battle: Quadraxis
- Location: Central Area Transport, after acquiring the third key.
- Strategy: Quadraxis is a multi-phase boss.
- Phase 1 (Legs): Target the weak points on its legs with Missiles. Use the Dark Beam to slow its movements.
- Phase 2 (Head): Once the legs are destroyed, its head will detach. Use the Boost Ball to reach the upper platforms. Target the head's weak points with Missiles.
- Phase 3 (Core): The core will be exposed. Use the Light Beam to damage it. You'll need to use the Dark Visor to see the core's weak points.
- Reward: Defeating Quadraxis grants you the Light Suit, a critical upgrade that negates the environmental damage of Dark Aether and allows you to traverse Dark Water.
Dark Aether: Sky Temple
With the Light Suit, you can now fully explore the Sky Temple, the heart of Dark Aether, and confront the Ing Emperor.
- Accessing Sky Temple: The Sky Temple is located in the center of Dark Aether, accessible once you have the Light Suit. The main entrance is typically found in the Sky Temple Gateway.
- Environmental Navigation: The Light Suit makes navigating Dark Aether much safer, but the Sky Temple still presents unique challenges, including energy barriers and powerful Ing forces.
- Enemy Variety: Expect to face the toughest variants of Ing, including Ingstorm and Ing Smashers. The Light Beam is particularly effective against these enemies, often disintegrating them quickly.
- Item Acquisition: Power Bomb Expansion
- Location: Sky Temple Core.
- Challenge: Found after a series of intense battles and platforming segments within the core structure.
- Benefit: Crucial for breaking specific blocks and dealing massive damage to bosses.
- Final Objective: Confront the Emperor Ing.
- Boss Battle: Emperor Ing
- Location: Sky Temple Core.
- Strategy: Emperor Ing is the final boss of Dark Aether and has three distinct phases.
- Phase 1 (Tentacle Form): The Emperor will attack with its tentacles. Target the glowing eyes on the tentacles with the Light Beam. When its core is exposed, unleash Super Missiles.
- Phase 2 (Chrysalis Form): The Emperor transforms into a chrysalis. It will summon smaller Ing. Use the Dark Beam to freeze the Ing, then target the chrysalis's weak points with Power Bombs and Super Missiles.
- Phase 3 (True Form): The Emperor's true form is revealed. It will teleport and attack with various beams. Use the Light Beam when it's vulnerable and the Dark Beam to slow it down. Dodge its attacks and continuously fire charged beams and missiles at its core.
- Reward: Defeating Emperor Ing will allow you to absorb the Dark Aether energy, bringing you closer to restoring Aether.
