Walkthrough: Sanctuary Fortress
Welcome to the Sanctuary Fortress, the technological heart of Aether and the final major area you'll explore. This zone is a labyrinth of mechanical constructs, powerful Luminoth technology, and some of the toughest Ing forces you've encountered yet. Prepare for intense combat, intricate puzzles, and a significant amount of backtracking if you're aiming for 100% item completion. This comprehensive guide will lead you through the critical path, detail key item acquisitions, and provide strategies for navigating this complex area, including the formidable boss encounter.
Initial Entry and Central Hub Navigation
- Entering Sanctuary Fortress: After completing your objectives in Torvus Bog, you will typically access Sanctuary Fortress via the Torvus Transport Station. This leads you directly into the Sanctuary Entrance chamber. Proceed through the initial corridor, eliminating any Ingclaws or War Wasps you encounter.
- Main Research: You'll quickly arrive at the Main Research chamber. This large, multi-level room serves as a central hub for the fortress. Immediately upon entering, look for a Missile Expansion hidden behind some crates on the ground floor, near the entrance from Sanctuary Entrance.
- Energy Tank Acquisition (Main Research): From the ground floor of Main Research, locate the magnetic tracks on the western wall. Use your Spider Ball to ascend these tracks. Navigate the series of tracks, avoiding electrical hazards, until you reach a door on the upper level leading to Reactor Access. Inside Reactor Access, you'll find an Energy Tank floating in the center of the room. This is a crucial early pickup for the challenges ahead.
- Navigating to Sentinel's Path: Return to Main Research. Your next objective is to reach the Sentinel's Path on the eastern side of the chamber. This involves using more Spider Ball tracks and potentially activating some platforms by shooting targets. Be wary of the robotic enemies, especially the Ingclaws that cling to walls and the Ingstorm drones.
Sentinel's Path and Dynamo Chamber
- Sentinel's Path Challenges: Sentinel's Path is a long, vertical shaft filled with intricate Spider Ball puzzles and environmental hazards.
- First Spider Ball Puzzle: Navigate the initial set of magnetic tracks. You'll encounter War Wasps and Ingstorm enemies. Use your Power Beam or Dark Beam to dispatch them quickly.
- Boost Ball Section: At a certain point, you'll need to use your Boost Ball to gain momentum and launch across gaps on the magnetic tracks. Timing is key here; a mistimed boost will send you falling.
- Missile Expansion on the Way: Keep an eye out for a hidden alcove along the Sentinel's Path. Approximately halfway up, look for a destructible panel on the wall. Blast it with a Missile to reveal a small passage containing a Missile Expansion.
- Dynamo Chamber: At the top of Sentinel's Path, you'll enter the Dynamo Chamber. This room is characterized by its large, rotating central mechanism.
- Activating the Dynamo: You'll need to use your Power Bomb on a specific structural weakness to activate the Dynamo, which will power up other areas of the fortress. Look for a cracked section on the central pillar or a glowing conduit.
- Energy Tank Reward: Once the Dynamo is active, a platform will rise from the central mechanism, granting you access to another Energy Tank floating above.
Acquiring Key Abilities: Screw Attack and Dark Visor
- Eastern Spire Access: From the Dynamo Chamber, proceed through the newly powered-up doors to the eastern side of the fortress. You'll pass through areas like Watch Station and Grand Spire. Be prepared for increased enemy resistance, including Ing Smashers and Dark Pirate Commandos.
- Screw Attack Acquisition: Your primary goal in this section is the Screw Attack. Navigate through the eastern spire until you reach the Central Area Transport. This area features a series of challenging platforming sections and combat encounters. After defeating a wave of Ing Smashers and solving a minor puzzle involving activating platforms, the Screw Attack will be revealed. This powerful ability allows you to become temporarily invincible, deal significant damage to enemies, and cross large gaps.
- Dark Visor Discovery: After obtaining the Screw Attack, backtrack slightly to the Main Energy Transfer room (accessible from the Grand Spire). You'll need to use your newly acquired Screw Attack to reach a previously inaccessible platform or activate a mechanism. The Dark Visor is located in this room. This essential upgrade allows you to see invisible platforms, enemies, and energy conduits in both Light and Dark Aether, crucial for navigating the fortress.
- Missile Expansion in Main Energy Transfer: While in Main Energy Transfer, immediately after acquiring the Dark Visor, activate it. You will reveal a hidden platform or a series of invisible magnetic tracks leading to a Missile Expansion in an alcove.
Navigating with New Abilities and Preparing for the Boss
- Gate Chamber and Boost Ball Maze: With the Screw Attack and Dark Visor, new paths open up. Head towards the Gate Chamber. This area features a complex Boost Ball maze. You'll need precise timing and Boost Ball jumps to navigate the magnetic tracks and activate the gate mechanism. Use your Dark Visor to reveal hidden sections of the maze or activate invisible switches.
- Power Bomb Expansion (Gate Chamber): Within the Gate Chamber's Boost Ball maze, there's a hidden path. Look for a section of magnetic track that seems to lead nowhere, or a destructible block that can be revealed with the Dark Visor. This will open a path to a Power Bomb Expansion.
- Accessing the Hive Temple Transport: Once the Gate Chamber's mechanism is activated, a path will open leading to the Hive Temple Transport. This transport will take you to the final section of Sanctuary Fortress.
- Save Station and Recharge: Before proceeding to the final boss of Sanctuary Fortress, ensure you find the Save Station and Energy Recharge Station in the Sanctuary Map Station or a nearby accessible room. Fully replenish your health, missiles, and power bombs. This is critical for the upcoming battle.
Boss Encounter: Quadraxis
The ultimate challenge of Sanctuary Fortress is the colossal Quadraxis, a massive Luminoth defense system corrupted by the Ing. This multi-stage boss fight requires a combination of all your abilities and keen awareness of its attack patterns. The battle takes place in the Quadraxis Battleground.
Phase 1: Destroying the Legs
- Target: Quadraxis's four legs.
- Strategy: The legs are armored, but each has a glowing weak point. Lock onto these points and unleash your Light Beam or Super Missiles. The Light Beam is particularly effective here.
- Attacks: Quadraxis will stomp, fire energy projectiles, and sweep its legs. Maintain distance and use your Boost Ball or Screw Attack to evade.
- Tip: Focus on one leg at a time to disable it quickly. Once a leg is destroyed, it will emit a burst of energy.
Phase 2: Head Detachment and Weak Point Exposure
- Target: The main head's three antennae.
- Strategy: Once all four legs are destroyed, Quadraxis's main head will detach and float independently. It will become cloaked. Activate your Dark Visor to reveal its three glowing antennae. Target these antennae with your Dark Beam or Darkburst to inflict damage.
- Attacks: The head will fire rapid energy blasts and deploy smaller Ing drones. Keep moving and use your Screw Attack to clear out drones if they become overwhelming.
- Tip: The antennae are small targets. Take your time with your shots. Each antenna will explode when destroyed.
Phase 3: Core Exposure and Final Assault
- Target: The exposed central core.
- Strategy: After destroying the three antennae, the head will fall to the ground, exposing its central core. Simultaneously, the main body will reactivate and begin firing a powerful laser. You need to use your Boost Ball to launch yourself onto the main body's magnetic tracks. Navigate these tracks using Spider Ball and Boost Ball to reach the top of the main body. Once there, use your Screw Attack to damage the exposed core of the fallen head below. Repeat this process until the core is destroyed.
- Attacks: The main body fires a continuous, sweeping laser. The fallen head will also fire projectiles. The environment itself becomes a hazard.
- Tip: Timing your Boost Ball jumps on the magnetic tracks is crucial. The Screw Attack is your most effective weapon against the core. You may need to perform multiple Screw Attacks to finish the boss.
Congratulations on conquering the Sanctuary Fortress! With Quadraxis defeated, you've secured another key component in your mission to restore Aether and gained the Annihilator Beam. Prepare for the final confrontation!
