Glitches & Exploits
While Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is a tightly designed experience, a few quirks and unintended mechanics can be exploited to your advantage, whether for speedrunning, sequence breaking, or simply exploring the game in new ways. Be aware that these advanced techniques often require precise timing, significant practice, and can sometimes lead to unexpected game behavior, though severe instability or save corruption is rare in the Prime series. Proceed with caution and consider backing up your save file if you're attempting particularly complex or risky exploits.
Space Jump Guardian Skip
This advanced technique allows you to bypass the Space Jump Guardian mini-boss entirely, saving significant time, especially in speedruns. This is a difficult maneuver and will likely require several attempts to master.
- Location: Temple Grounds, Grand Lore.
- Requirements: Morph Ball, Boost Ball.
- Goal: Reach the exit leading to the Agon Wastes Transport without defeating the Space Jump Guardian.
- Strategy:
- Enter the Grand Lore room from the Temple Grounds.
- Proceed to the central area where the Space Jump Guardian would normally materialize after a short cutscene.
- Instead of triggering the Guardian, look to the left side of the room (as you entered) for a small, elevated ledge. This ledge is directly beneath the higher platform that leads to the Agon Wastes Transport.
- Transform into Morph Ball mode.
- Position yourself on the lower ground directly below the small ledge.
- Perform a precise Boost Ball jump. The key is to release the Boost Ball charge at the absolute peak of your jump to maximize vertical momentum. You need to land on the small ledge. This step is the most difficult and requires consistent timing.
- Once successfully on the small ledge, immediately transform back into Samus.
- From this small ledge, perform a well-timed jump towards the higher platform that leads to the Agon Wastes Transport. You should be able to grab the edge of this platform.
- Pull yourself up onto the platform. If successful, you will have bypassed the Space Jump Guardian and can proceed to the Agon Wastes without engaging it in combat.
- Common Pitfalls: Missing the Boost Ball timing, failing to land on the small ledge, or not getting enough height for the final jump to the upper platform.
Early Dark Visor (Screw Attack Skip)
This exploit allows you to acquire the Dark Visor much earlier than intended, bypassing the requirement for the Screw Attack to access its location. This can open up new routing options and make certain areas more manageable sooner by allowing early access to Dark World navigation and Dark-specific enemy targeting.
- Exploit Start Location: Agon Wastes, Portal Site.
- Dark Visor Pickup Location: Dark Agon Temple, Main Energy Controller (accessed via Portal Site).
- Requirements: Morph Ball, Boost Ball, Spider Ball.
- Goal: Reach the Dark Agon Temple's Main Energy Controller to collect the Dark Visor without using the Screw Attack to destroy the barrier in the Portal Site.
- Strategy:
- Travel to the Portal Site in Agon Wastes. This is the room with the large Light World portal that leads to the Dark Agon Temple.
- Normally, a barrier requiring the Screw Attack blocks a Spider Ball track that leads directly to the portal. Instead of destroying this barrier, we will bypass it.
- Locate the base of the Spider Ball track that ascends towards the portal. Position Samus in Morph Ball mode directly beneath the start of this track, near the wall where the barrier would be.
- Charge and release a Boost Ball. The timing is critical here: you need to release the Boost Ball to gain maximum height, and as Samus reaches the absolute apex of her jump, quickly activate the Spider Ball.
- With precise timing and positioning, Samus will latch onto the Spider Ball track despite the barrier being intact. This is a very tight window and may take multiple attempts.
- Once latched onto the track, traverse it upwards to the platform where the Light World portal is located.
- Enter the Light World portal to transport to the Dark Agon Temple.
- You will arrive in the Main Energy Controller room of the Dark Agon Temple. The Dark Visor is located on a pedestal in this room.
- Collect the Dark Visor.
- Benefits: Early access to the Dark Visor allows for easier navigation in Dark Aether, reveals hidden platforms, and makes certain Dark Aether enemies (like the Ing) vulnerable to targeting much earlier in the game.
- Common Pitfalls: Missing the precise Boost Ball timing for Spider Ball activation, or not positioning correctly at the base of the track.
Bomb Jump into Morph Ball Tunnel (Early Power Bomb Expansion)
This classic Metroid technique is applicable in Echoes and allows you to reach a Power Bomb Expansion in the Temple Grounds earlier than the intended method, which typically involves acquiring the Gravity Boost or Space Jump first to reach higher ledges. Mastering bomb jumps is a fundamental skill for sequence breaking.
- Location: Temple Grounds, Main Energy Transfer Station.
- Requirements: Morph Ball, Bombs.
- Goal: Access a high Morph Ball tunnel containing a Power Bomb Expansion.
- Strategy:
- Navigate to the Main Energy Transfer Station in the Temple Grounds. This is the large, multi-level room with several energy conduits.
- Locate the Morph Ball tunnel that leads to a Power Bomb Expansion. This tunnel is situated high up on one of the walls, typically out of reach for a standard Morph Ball jump.
- Transform into Morph Ball mode.
- Position Samus directly beneath the entrance to the Morph Ball tunnel. Ensure you have enough space above you for the jump.
- Lay a bomb. As the bomb is about to explode (just before the flash), immediately lay a second bomb.
- The first bomb's explosion will propel Samus upwards. As she reaches the apex of this initial jump, the second bomb should explode, giving her an additional, crucial boost.
- With precise timing, this double bomb jump (or even a triple bomb jump for more height, if needed) will propel Samus high enough to enter the Morph Ball tunnel.
- Once inside the tunnel, navigate through it to collect the Power Bomb Expansion.
- Advanced Technique (Triple Bomb Jump): For tunnels requiring even more height, a triple bomb jump can be performed. Lay the first bomb, then the second just before the first explodes. As the second bomb is about to explode and propel you higher, lay a third bomb. The third bomb will then boost you further. This requires extremely precise timing.
- Benefits: Acquiring an additional Power Bomb Expansion early provides more offensive capabilities and allows for breaking certain Power Bomb blocks sooner, potentially opening up new paths or item pickups.
- Common Pitfalls: Incorrect timing between laying bombs, causing Samus to fall before gaining sufficient height, or laying bombs too quickly, resulting in only one effective explosion. Practice is key.
