Hive Lord

The Hive Lord is your first true test of combat prowess, encountered in the depths of the Arcterra Hive. This colossal insectoid beast guards the path to the Morph Ball Bomb upgrade.

Phase 1: Exposed Core

  • Attack Patterns:
    • Acid Spit: The Hive Lord will periodically spit corrosive acid in a wide arc. This attack is telegraphed by a guttural roar and a greenish glow from its mouth.
    • Mandible Swipe: If you get too close, it will attempt to swipe at Samus with its massive mandibles.
    • Minion Swarm: It will occasionally summon a swarm of small, flying Hive Drones to distract you.
    • Strategy:
      • Immediately target the glowing orange core on its underside. This is its primary weakness.
      • Use your Power Beam for consistent damage. Charge shots are effective when you have a clear opening.
      • Dodge the Acid Spit by strafing to the left or right. The attack has a slight delay, giving you time to react.
      • When Hive Drones appear, quickly dispatch them with a few rapid Power Beam shots. They can interrupt your attacks on the boss.
      • Maintain a medium distance to avoid the Mandible Swipe while still being able to accurately hit its core.

    Phase 2: Armored Defense

    • Trigger: After taking significant damage, the Hive Lord will retract its core and deploy armored plates, making it invulnerable to direct Power Beam attacks.
    • Attack Patterns:
      • Charged Acid Barrage: The Acid Spit becomes more frequent and can now track Samus more aggressively.
      • Ground Pound: It will occasionally slam its body into the ground, creating a small shockwave that can knock Samus back.
      • Reinforced Minions: The Hive Drones it summons in this phase are slightly more durable.
      • Strategy:
        • Your objective now shifts to its vulnerable leg joints. Target the glowing blue segments on its six legs.
        • Use charged Power Beam shots or rapid-fire to break these segments. Once a segment is destroyed, the leg will temporarily buckle.
        • After destroying two leg segments, the Hive Lord will momentarily collapse, exposing its core once again.
        • Unload as much damage as possible on the exposed core during this window. A fully charged Power Beam shot followed by rapid fire is ideal.
        • Repeat this process until the Hive Lord is defeated. Be mindful of the Ground Pound; jump to avoid the shockwave.
      • Reward: Defeating the Hive Lord grants you the Morph Ball Bomb, essential for accessing new areas and solving environmental puzzles.

      Kraid (Optional Mini-Boss)

While not a mandatory boss for story progression, Kraid offers a significant challenge and rewards you with a crucial upgrade. He is found in the hidden caverns of Volcanus Prime, accessible only after acquiring the Grapple Beam.

      Phase 1: Belly Vulnerability

      • Attack Patterns:
        • Claw Swipe: Kraid will attempt to swipe at Samus with his massive claws if you are too close.
        • Spike Projectiles: He will periodically launch sharp spikes from his belly, which travel in a straight line.
        • Roar Stun: A powerful roar can momentarily stun Samus if she's caught in its radius.
        • Strategy:
          • Kraid's primary weakness in this phase is his exposed belly. However, it's often out of reach.
          • Your goal is to get him to expose his belly. Fire charged Power Beam shots at his head. This will enrage him.
          • Once enraged, Kraid will rear back and let out a roar, briefly exposing his belly. This is your window!
          • Unload a volley of Power Beam shots into his belly. If you have the Charge Beam, a fully charged shot will deal significant damage.
          • Dodge the Spike Projectiles by strafing or jumping. The Roar Stun can be avoided by maintaining distance or by quickly morphing into Morph Ball form.

        Phase 2: Platforming & Precision

        • Trigger: After taking substantial damage, Kraid will smash the ground, creating platforms of varying heights around the arena.
        • Attack Patterns:
          • Fireball Barrage: Kraid will now spit multiple fireballs that track Samus.
          • Armored Spikes: His belly will now be partially armored, making direct hits less effective.
          • Platform Collapse: Some platforms will periodically crumble, forcing you to move.
          • Strategy:
            • The key to this phase is utilizing the newly formed platforms. Jump and use your Space Jump Boots to navigate.
            • Kraid will still expose his belly after being enraged by headshots, but now you need to be on a higher platform to reach it effectively.
            • Look for the glowing red spots on his arms and shoulders. These are secondary weak points. Hitting these will cause him to flinch, creating small openings.
            • Once his belly is exposed, aim for the unarmored sections. If you have acquired the Super Missile upgrade from the Phazon Mines, now is the time to use it! A single Super Missile hit to the exposed belly deals massive damage.
            • Be mindful of the crumbling platforms. Always have an escape route planned.
            • Continue to enrage him with headshots, use the platforms to gain elevation, and unleash your most powerful attacks on his exposed belly until he falls.
          • Reward: Defeating Kraid unlocks the Varia Suit, providing crucial heat resistance and reducing damage from environmental hazards and fire-based attacks. This is essential for exploring the hotter regions of Volcanus Prime.
