Health & Damage System
Understanding Samus's health and how damage is dealt and mitigated is crucial for surviving the hostile environments of Tallon IV. This section details the mechanics of your energy, how to replenish it, and strategies for minimizing incoming damage.
Samus's Energy (Health)
Your current health is represented by the large, segmented bar on your Heads-Up Display (HUD). Each segment represents a specific amount of energy. Initially, Samus begins with 99 health points. This base capacity can be significantly increased by collecting Energy Tanks.
- Energy Tanks: Each Energy Tank you collect adds 100 health points to your maximum capacity. There are a total of 14 Energy Tanks scattered across Tallon IV. Collecting all of them will bring your maximum health to 1499.
- Energy Tank Locations (Early Game Examples):
- Chozo Ruins: One Energy Tank is found in the Main Plaza, accessible after acquiring the Morph Ball. Roll through the small tunnel near the waterfall.
- Tallon Overworld: Another is located in the Cargo Freight Lift to Deck Gamma, requiring the Morph Ball Bomb to break open a grate.
- Phendrana Drifts: A relatively early tank can be found in the Phendrana Shorelines, behind a sheet of ice that can be melted with the Plasma Beam (later in the game).
Health Replenishment
Maintaining Samus's health is vital. There are several ways to restore lost energy:
- Energy Orbs: These small, glowing orbs are dropped by defeated enemies and sometimes found in destructible crates or environmental objects. They restore a small amount of health.
- Large Energy Orbs: Less common than their smaller counterparts, these orbs restore a significant portion of Samus's health. They are often found after defeating mini-bosses or in hidden areas.
- Save Stations: Fully restore Samus's health and missiles upon use. Always make it a priority to visit a Save Station when your health is low, especially before entering a new, potentially dangerous area.
- Ship Heal: Returning to your Gunship in the Landing Site of Tallon Overworld will fully restore your health and missiles. This is a reliable, albeit sometimes time-consuming, way to recover.
Damage Mechanics & Mitigation
Damage in Metroid Prime Remastered comes from various sources, and understanding how to minimize it is key to survival.
Environmental Hazards
Many areas on Tallon IV pose environmental threats that can chip away at Samus's health. These include:
- Lava/Acid Pools: Found in areas like Magmoor Caverns and Phazon Mines. Stepping into these instantly drains health. The Varia Suit and Gravity Suit offer protection, but prolonged exposure is still dangerous.
- Extreme Temperatures: Phendrana Drifts' frigid temperatures and Magmoor Caverns' intense heat will damage Samus over time without the appropriate suit upgrades.
- Varia Suit: Protects against high temperatures (Magmoor Caverns). Obtainable in the Magmoor Caverns after defeating the Incinerator Drone.
- Gravity Suit: Protects against low temperatures (Phendrana Drifts) and allows free movement underwater. Found in the Underwater Cavern in Phendrana Drifts.
- Toxic Gas/Phazon: Areas like the Phazon Mines contain toxic gases and raw Phazon, which inflict continuous damage. The Phazon Suit (acquired later in the game) provides immunity to Phazon damage.
- Physical Obstacles: Falling from great heights, being crushed by moving platforms, or colliding with certain environmental elements can also cause minor damage.
Enemy Attacks
Each enemy in Metroid Prime Remastered has unique attack patterns and damage outputs. Scanning enemies with your Scan Visor will provide valuable information on their weaknesses and attack types.
- Weak Points: Many enemies have specific weak points that, when targeted, deal significantly more damage. For example, the eye of a Plazmite or the glowing core of a Space Pirate.
- Beam Types: Different beam weapons (Power Beam, Ice Beam, Wave Beam, Plasma Beam) are more effective against certain enemy types. Using the correct beam can drastically reduce the time it takes to defeat an enemy and, consequently, the damage you take.
- Ice Beam: Effective against fiery enemies and can freeze some foes.
- Wave Beam: Strong against electrical enemies and can bypass some energy shields.
- Plasma Beam: Devastating against ice-based enemies and can melt certain obstacles.
- Charge Shots & Missiles: Utilizing charged beam shots and Missiles for high-damage output is crucial for quickly dispatching tougher enemies and bosses, reducing their opportunity to attack.
Damage Reduction
Your Power Suit provides inherent damage reduction, but specific upgrades enhance this further:
- Varia Suit: In addition to heat protection, the Varia Suit offers a general increase in damage resistance against all incoming attacks.
- Gravity Suit: Provides further damage resistance on top of the Varia Suit, making Samus even more durable.
- Phazon Suit: The ultimate defensive upgrade, offering the highest damage resistance and complete immunity to Phazon radiation.
By effectively managing your energy, knowing when and how to heal, and strategically utilizing your suit upgrades and weapon systems, you can navigate the perils of Tallon IV with greater confidence and success.
