Enemies & Hazards
SR388 is a hostile planet, and Samus will encounter a vast array of indigenous lifeforms and environmental dangers determined to impede her mission. Understanding their attack patterns and weaknesses is crucial for survival and efficient Metroid extermination. This section details common enemies and environmental hazards you'll face, along with effective strategies.
Standard Enemies
Most standard enemies can be defeated with a few shots from your Power Beam, but some require specific tactics. Always prioritize avoiding damage, as health and missile pickups can be scarce.
- Hornoad: These reptilian creatures are common in the early areas. They typically walk along platforms and can be easily dispatched with a single Power Beam shot. Their primary attack is a headbutt if you get too close. A well-timed Melee Counter will stun them for an instant kill.
- Mochtroid: Not to be confused with actual Metroids, these small, insect-like creatures fly erratically. They are more annoying than dangerous, often flying into Samus. A single Power Beam shot is usually enough. Use your Free Aim to target them precisely.
- Fune: Aquatic enemies found in submerged areas. They swim back and forth and can be a nuisance when navigating underwater. The Power Beam works, but a Missile is more efficient for clearing them quickly, especially if you're low on health.
- Skree: These bat-like creatures hang from ceilings and drop down when Samus passes underneath. They are vulnerable while falling. Shoot them before they hit the ground to avoid their short-range pounce attack.
- Zebesian: Often found guarding specific areas or items, these creatures are more resilient than basic enemies. They fire projectiles and can take several Power Beam shots. A Melee Counter followed by a rapid-fire Power Beam burst is highly effective.
- Sidehopper: Large, insectoid enemies that hop across the ground. They are tough and can deal significant damage. Aim for their head with the Power Beam, or use a Missile for a quicker defeat. Their jumping pattern can be predictable, allowing for easy Melee Counters.
Environmental Hazards
SR388 is full of natural and artificial dangers that can harm Samus. Awareness and quick reflexes are key to navigating these hazards.
- Acid Pools: Bright green liquid that causes continuous damage upon contact. Avoid falling into these at all costs. Often, you'll need to use the Spider Ball or Space Jump to traverse areas with acid pools. Look for solid platforms or grapple points.
- Lava: Found in volcanic regions, lava is instantly lethal. Even brief contact will result in a game over. The Varia Suit does NOT protect against lava. Utilize the Space Jump, Screw Attack, and Grapple Beam to cross lava-filled rooms.
- Spikes: Sharp protrusions from walls, ceilings, or floors. Contact with spikes causes moderate damage. The Screw Attack provides temporary invincibility and allows Samus to pass through spikes without harm. Otherwise, carefully navigate around them.
- Crushing Blocks: These heavy blocks move up and down or side to side, often in a timed pattern. Getting caught between a crushing block and a solid surface is instantly fatal. Observe their movement patterns and time your movements precisely. The Morph Ball can sometimes allow you to squeeze through tight gaps.
- Energy Barriers: Force fields that block Samus's path. These are typically activated by switches or require specific beam upgrades to disable. For example, some barriers require the Plasma Beam to overload their generators.
- Toxic Gas: Certain areas are filled with noxious fumes that slowly drain Samus's health. The Varia Suit is essential for mitigating damage in these zones, but prolonged exposure will still be detrimental. Find and activate ventilation systems or quickly pass through these areas.
Advanced Combat Tips
- Melee Counter is Your Best Friend: Many enemies in Metroid: Samus Returns have specific attack animations that can be interrupted by a well-timed Melee Counter (X button). This stuns them, leaving them vulnerable to a powerful follow-up attack, often a one-hit kill. Practice this technique early and often.
- Free Aim for Precision: Holding L allows Samus to aim in a full 360-degree arc. This is invaluable for targeting weak points, hitting flying enemies, or shooting switches from awkward angles.
- Aeion Abilities for Crowd Control: Don't forget your Aeion Abilities! The Lightning Arm can stun multiple enemies, while the Scan Pulse can reveal hidden paths and enemies. The Beam Burst significantly increases your damage output against tougher foes.
- Missiles for Tougher Foes: While your Power Beam is versatile, Missiles are crucial for quickly dispatching stronger enemies and Metroids. Always keep an eye on your Missile count and replenish them when possible.
- Exploit Elemental Weaknesses: As you acquire new beam upgrades like the Ice Beam or Plasma Beam, experiment with them. Some enemies are particularly vulnerable to certain elemental attacks, freezing them in place or dealing extra damage.
