Upon entering Area 3, you'll immediately notice the reduced mobility underwater. Samus moves slower and jumps lower. Your primary goal in this area, beyond hunting Metroids, is to acquire the Gravity Suit. The Gravity Suit negates the effects of water on Samus's movement, allowing for normal speed and jump height, and also provides resistance to certain environmental hazards. To find it, you'll need to explore the deeper sections of Area 3, often requiring the use of the Spider Ball and Power Bombs to open new paths. Until you have the Gravity Suit, be patient with your movements and use the Screw Attack for temporary invincibility when navigating dense enemy clusters. Look for a large, submerged chamber that houses the upgrade.
