Boss: Charge Beam Chozo Statue
The first major challenge you'll face in Brinstar is the enigmatic Chozo Statue, which guards the powerful Charge Beam. This encounter serves as an excellent introduction to boss mechanics in Metroid: Zero Mission, requiring precise movement and timing.
Preparation
Before engaging the Chozo Statue, ensure you've collected all available upgrades in the immediate vicinity. While not strictly necessary, having extra Missile Tanks and Energy Tanks will make the fight significantly easier.
- Missile Tanks: There are several Missile Tanks scattered throughout Brinstar. Aim to have at least 20-30 Missiles before this fight.
- Energy Tanks: Having at least two Energy Tanks (giving you 200 health) is highly recommended.
You'll find the Chozo Statue in a large, open room deep within Brinstar. The room has a high ceiling and several platforms, which you'll utilize during the battle.
Phase 1: Learning the Pattern
Upon entering the room and approaching the statue, it will animate and begin its attack sequence. The Chozo Statue has a straightforward, predictable pattern:
- Energy Orb Attack: The statue will raise its arm and fire a slow-moving, large energy orb directly at Samus's current position. This orb deals moderate damage if it connects.
- Missile Vulnerability: Immediately after firing the energy orb, the statue's chest will open, revealing a glowing core. This is its weak point.
Strategy
The key to defeating the Charge Beam Chozo Statue is to exploit its vulnerability window. Here's a step-by-step breakdown:
- Dodge the Orb: As soon as the statue begins to charge its energy orb, prepare to move. The orb travels slowly, giving you ample time to react. The most effective way to dodge is to simply run or jump over it. If you're on a higher platform, you can drop down.
- Expose the Core: Once the energy orb is fired, the statue's chest will open. This is your cue to attack.
- Unleash Missiles: Fire Missiles directly into the glowing core. Each Missile hit will register damage. You can typically get 2-3 Missiles off before the core closes.
- Repeat: The statue will then repeat its attack pattern. Continue to dodge the energy orb and fire Missiles into its core until it is defeated.
Tips for Success
- Stay Mobile: Never stand still for too long. Constant movement makes dodging the energy orb much easier.
- Platform Utilization: Use the platforms in the room to your advantage. You can jump between them to create distance from the orb or to get a better angle for your Missiles.
- Conserve Energy: While the statue's attacks are predictable, they can still chip away at your health. Try to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
- Beam Shots (Optional): If you run out of Missiles, you can still damage the core with your regular Beam shots, but it will take significantly longer to defeat the boss. Prioritize using Missiles.
Reward
Once the Chozo Statue is defeated, it will revert to its inanimate form. Approach it and touch the glowing orb it holds to acquire the Charge Beam. This essential upgrade allows Samus to charge her beam weapon for a more powerful shot, dealing increased damage and often piercing through multiple enemies.
