Boss: Parasite Queen
The Parasite Queen is the first major boss you'll encounter in Metroid: Zero Mission, located deep within the Crateria area. While she may seem intimidating, her attack patterns are straightforward, making her a good test of your basic combat skills.
Preparation
Before engaging the Parasite Queen, ensure you have collected all available upgrades in the immediate area. This includes:
- Missile Tank: There's often a Missile Tank hidden nearby before this boss, so explore thoroughly. Having at least 15-20 Missiles will make this fight significantly easier.
- Energy Tanks: While not strictly necessary for this early boss, having an extra Energy Tank or two will provide a comfortable buffer.
Make sure your health and missile count are topped off. There are usually enemies in the rooms leading up to the boss that can drop health and missiles.
Battle Strategy
The Parasite Queen is a stationary boss, meaning she won't move around the room. Her primary attack is a series of energy projectiles that she fires from her mouth. The key to defeating her lies in understanding her attack pattern and exploiting her weak point.
Phase 1: Projectile Barrage
- Dodge the Projectiles: The Parasite Queen will open her mouth and fire a spread of green energy projectiles. These can be easily dodged by standing on the platforms to the left or right of her, or by jumping over them if you're on the ground.
- Identify the Weak Point: Her only vulnerable spot is her open mouth. You cannot damage her when her mouth is closed.
- Attack with Missiles: When her mouth is open, unleash your Missiles. Each Missile hit will deal significant damage. Standard Beam shots will also work, but Missiles are far more effective.
- Conserve Missiles (Optional): If you're low on Missiles, you can use your regular Power Beam, but be prepared for a longer fight.
Phase 2: Increased Frequency
As you deal more damage, the Parasite Queen will begin to fire her projectiles more frequently. The strategy remains the same:
- Continue to dodge her attacks.
- Fire Missiles into her open mouth.
There are no additional attacks or environmental hazards to worry about during this fight. Focus on consistent missile hits and avoiding damage.
Tips for Success
- Stay Mobile: Even though she's stationary, you shouldn't be. Constantly move between the platforms to avoid her projectiles.
- Prioritize Missiles: Missiles are your best friend here. Don't be afraid to use them liberally.
- Patience: Don't rush. Wait for her mouth to open, then fire. Trying to hit her when her mouth is closed is a waste of ammo.
- Collect Drops: Occasionally, the Parasite Queen will drop small energy or missile refills. Grab these if you need them, but don't put yourself in harm's way to do so.
Once you've dealt enough damage, the Parasite Queen will explode, clearing the path forward and rewarding you with a satisfying victory. Proceed through the newly opened passage to continue your mission.
