Inventory Management
Effective inventory management in Metroid: Zero Mission is crucial for survival and exploration. Unlike some other Metroid titles, Samus's inventory is primarily comprised of permanent upgrades and consumable Missile/Super Missile and Energy Tank reserves. There's no complex item juggling, but knowing what you have, how to use it, and where to find more is key.
Understanding Your Inventory Screen
Access your inventory by pressing the START button. This screen provides vital information:
- Energy Tanks: Displays your current health and the number of Energy Tanks you possess. Each full tank adds 100 health points.
- Missiles: Shows your current Missile count and your maximum capacity. Missiles are used for opening red doors and defeating certain enemies/bosses.
- Super Missiles: (Acquired later) Displays your current Super Missile count and maximum capacity. Super Missiles are more powerful than standard Missiles and are required for opening green doors and dealing significant damage to tougher foes.
- Equipped Beam: Indicates your currently active beam weapon. You can cycle through acquired beams (Charge Beam, Ice Beam, Wide Beam, Plasma Beam) using the SELECT button.
- Equipped Suit: Shows your current suit (Power Suit, Varia Suit, Gravity Suit).
- Equipped Boots: Displays your current boot upgrade (High Jump Boots, Space Jump).
- Other Abilities: Lists other acquired abilities like Morph Ball, Bombs, Screw Attack, Speed Booster, etc.
Consumable Management: Energy and Ammo
While most upgrades are permanent, careful management of your Energy and Missile/Super Missile reserves is paramount. Running out of these at critical moments can lead to frustrating setbacks.
Energy Management
Your health is represented by Energy. Collecting Energy Tanks permanently increases your maximum health. Smaller energy pickups (usually dropped by enemies or found in breakable blocks) restore a small amount of health.
- Prioritize Energy Tanks: Always seek out and collect Energy Tanks. They are often found in hidden areas or as rewards for defeating mini-bosses. A common early-game Energy Tank can be found in Brinstar, accessible after acquiring the Morph Ball and Bombs, by bombing a suspicious floor in a vertical shaft.
- Farm Enemies: If low on health before a boss or a challenging area, return to a room with easily defeated enemies that drop energy. The flying creatures in Crateria or the small ground-crawlers in Brinstar are good early targets.
- Save Stations: Utilize Save Stations not just to save your progress, but also to fully replenish your energy and missiles. Plan your routes to pass by these stations frequently.
Missile and Super Missile Management
Missiles and Super Missiles are your primary offensive tools against stronger enemies and bosses, and are essential for progression.
- Missile Expansions: These items permanently increase your maximum Missile capacity by 5. They are scattered throughout Zebes. An early Missile Expansion can be found in Crateria, just above the landing site, requiring a carefully aimed shot to a hidden block. Another is in Brinstar, accessible after acquiring the Morph Ball, by bombing a path to a small alcove.
- Super Missile Expansions: These increase your Super Missile capacity by 2. They are rarer than Missile Expansions and typically found in later areas. The first Super Missile Expansion is usually found in Norfair, often after defeating Kraid.
- Conserve Ammo: Don't waste Missiles on common enemies unless absolutely necessary. Your Power Beam is sufficient for most standard threats. Save your Missiles for red doors, green doors (Super Missiles), and boss fights.
- Replenish Ammo: Like energy, enemies can drop Missile and Super Missile pickups. Larger enemies and mini-bosses are more likely to drop these. Save Stations also fully replenish your ammo.
Strategic Item Usage
While you don't "use" most upgrades in the traditional sense, knowing when and how to leverage them is key.
- Beam Switching (SELECT button):
- Ice Beam: Essential for freezing enemies to use as platforms or to disable them. Crucial for reaching high ledges and solving certain puzzles.
- Wide Beam: Increases the width of your beam, hitting multiple targets. Excellent for clearing rooms quickly.
- Plasma Beam: The strongest beam, piercing through enemies. Ideal for boss fights and heavily armored foes.
- Charge Beam: Allows you to charge your shots for increased damage. Always useful.
- Strategy: Often, you'll want to combine beams for maximum effect (e.g., Charge + Plasma Beam). Experiment with combinations to find what works best for different situations.
- Morph Ball & Bombs:
- Morph Ball: Allows access to small tunnels and hidden passages.
- Bombs: Used to destroy certain blocks, reveal hidden paths, and propel Samus upwards in Morph Ball form. Master bomb jumping for advanced exploration and sequence breaking.
- Strategy: Always try bombing suspicious floors or walls in Morph Ball tunnels; many secrets are hidden this way.
- Screw Attack:
- Activates an invulnerable, damaging spin jump. Use it to tear through enemies and destroy special blocks.
- Strategy: Once acquired, the Screw Attack makes many areas significantly easier. Don't be afraid to use it to plow through enemy-infested rooms.
- Speed Booster & Shinespark:
- Speed Booster: Allows Samus to run at high speeds, destroying enemies in her path.
- Shinespark: A powerful, directional dash activated after Speed Boosting. Essential for breaking Speed Booster blocks and reaching distant areas.
- Strategy: Mastering Shinespark puzzles is often required for 100% completion and accessing certain areas. Practice the timing and directional inputs.
By keeping a close eye on your resources and understanding the utility of each item, you'll navigate Zebes much more efficiently and effectively.
