Game Modes

Metroid: Zero Mission offers a few distinct ways to experience Samus Aran's origin story. Beyond the standard playthrough, there are options for both new players and seasoned veterans looking for a challenge or to revisit the classic.

Normal Game

This is the default mode and the recommended starting point for most players. It provides a balanced experience, allowing you to learn the game's mechanics, explore Zebes, and uncover its secrets without excessive difficulty. Expect a fair challenge, but with ample opportunities to find Energy Tanks and Missile Expansions to aid your journey.

  • Objective: Defeat the Space Pirates, Mother Brain, and escape Zebes.
  • Difficulty: Standard enemy health and damage, reasonable boss patterns.
  • Item Locations: All Energy Tanks, Missile Expansions, Super Missile Expansions, and Power Bomb Expansions are available in their standard locations. Consult the "Item Locations" section of this guide for detailed maps and strategies to acquire them.
  • Strategy for New Players:
    1. Prioritize collecting Energy Tanks early on, especially in Brinstar and Kraid's Lair, to increase your survivability.
    2. Don't be afraid to backtrack! Many areas become accessible only after acquiring new abilities like the Morph Ball, Bombs, or High Jump Boots.
    3. Practice your shinesparks! Mastering this technique is crucial for reaching certain hidden areas and collecting valuable items.
    4. Save frequently at Save Stations. There's nothing worse than losing progress to a tough boss or unexpected enemy.

Hard Game

Unlocked after completing the game once on Normal difficulty, Hard Mode significantly ramps up the challenge. This mode is designed for players who have a solid understanding of the game's layout, enemy patterns, and Samus's abilities. Expect enemies to deal more damage, bosses to have increased health, and resources to be scarcer.

  • Objective: Same as Normal Game, but with increased difficulty.
  • Difficulty:
    • Enemies inflict more damage.
    • Bosses have increased HP and may have slightly faster attack patterns.
    • Energy and Missile drops from enemies are less frequent.
  • Item Locations: All items are in the same locations as Normal Mode, but acquiring them becomes more critical due to the increased difficulty.
  • Strategy for Hard Mode:
    1. Damage Mitigation: Focus heavily on avoiding damage. Learn enemy attack patterns and utilize Samus's agility.
    2. Resource Management: Be judicious with your Missiles and Super Missiles. Only use them when necessary, especially against bosses.
    3. Early Upgrades: Prioritize collecting Energy Tanks and Missile Expansions as early as possible to give yourself a fighting chance. The first Energy Tank in Brinstar (accessible via a hidden passage near the elevator from Crateria) is vital.
    4. Master Movement: Advanced techniques like wall-jumping and bomb-jumping become even more important for navigating quickly and avoiding hazards.
    5. Boss Specifics: For bosses like Kraid and Ridley, learn their precise weak points and attack windows to minimize the fight duration and conserve health. For example, against Kraid, aim for his mouth with Missiles when it's open.

Gallery Mode

This mode is a bonus feature unlocked by completing the game. It allows you to view various images related to Metroid: Zero Mission and the original Metroid game. The specific images unlocked depend on your completion time and percentage in the main game modes.

  • Access: Select "Gallery" from the main menu after completing the game on any difficulty.
  • Unlocking Content:
    • Completing the game on Normal or Hard will unlock a set of images.
    • Achieving a 100% item collection rate will unlock additional images.
    • Finishing the game within specific time limits (e.g., under 2 hours, under 1 hour) will also unlock unique artwork.
  • Tip: If you're aiming for all gallery images, consider speedrunning on Hard Mode with 100% item collection for the ultimate challenge and reward.

Original Metroid

A fantastic bonus feature, this allows you to play the original Famicom Disk System / NES version of Metroid directly from the Zero Mission cartridge. This is unlocked upon completing Metroid: Zero Mission on any difficulty.

  • Access: Select "Original Metroid" from the main menu after completing Zero Mission.
  • Experience: Relive the classic adventure that started it all, with its challenging difficulty, cryptic map, and groundbreaking exploration.
  • Note: This is a direct port of the original game, so expect the same mechanics, graphics, and sound from the 1986 classic. There are no modern enhancements or quality-of-life changes.
  • Strategy for Original Metroid:
    1. Map Knowledge: The original Metroid does not have an in-game map. It's highly recommended to use an external map or draw your own to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of Zebes.
    2. Energy Management: Energy Tanks are few and far between. Conserve your health and be wary of enemy respawns.
    3. Missile Conservation: Missiles are crucial for opening red doors and defeating bosses. Don't waste them!
    4. Hidden Passages: Many crucial items and paths are hidden behind destructible blocks. Shoot every block that looks suspicious.
