Item & Upgrade Descriptions
This section details all of Samus's essential upgrades and collectible items in Metroid: Zero Mission. Understanding what each item does and, more importantly, where to find them, is crucial for both progression and achieving that coveted 100% completion. We'll cover everything from fundamental movement upgrades to powerful weapon enhancements and vital energy tanks.
Movement & Utility Upgrades
- Morph Ball
- Description: Samus can transform into a small, compact sphere, allowing her to access narrow passages and roll through tight spaces. This is a fundamental ability for exploration and is required to proceed past many early game obstacles.
- Location: Acquired very early in Crateria. After navigating a short path from your crashed Gunship, you'll find the Morph Ball in a small, circular chamber. You cannot miss this upgrade as it's required to proceed past the initial area.
- Strategy: Use the Morph Ball to roll under low ceilings, through small tunnels, and into hidden crevices. Many secrets are tucked away in Morph Ball-accessible areas. It's also essential for performing Bomb Jumps.
- Specific Location: From your crashed ship in Crateria, head right, drop down, and continue right through the first few rooms. The Morph Ball is in a dedicated item room.
- Bomb
- Description: While in Morph Ball form, Samus can deploy small bombs that explode after a short delay. These bombs can destroy certain blocks (Bomb Blocks), damage enemies, and propel Samus upwards.
- Location: Found in Brinstar, shortly after acquiring the Morph Ball and entering the region. It's in a small room accessible via a Morph Ball tunnel.
- Strategy: Bombs are essential for opening new paths. Look for cracked blocks or suspicious floor/ceiling tiles. You can also use bombs to perform a "Bomb Jump" (deploying a bomb, then another just as the first explodes to gain extra height) to reach otherwise inaccessible ledges. Mastering Bomb Jumps is crucial for sequence breaking and 100% item collection.
- Specific Location: After entering Brinstar from Crateria, proceed right. You'll find the Bomb upgrade in a room that requires you to use your new Morph Ball ability to roll under a low passage.
- Long Beam
- Description: Extends the range of Samus's Power Beam, allowing her to hit enemies and targets from a greater distance. This makes combat significantly safer and easier.
- Location: Located in Brinstar, typically found after navigating through the initial areas and before encountering your first major boss. It's often in a room with a few enemies, requiring basic platforming to reach.
- Strategy: This is a quality-of-life upgrade that makes combat significantly easier. Prioritize picking it up early. It's not strictly required for progression but greatly reduces difficulty.
- Specific Location: From the first Save Room in Brinstar, head right, then down. You'll find the Long Beam in a room with several Zoomers, accessible by dropping through a floor.
- Charge Beam
- Description: Allows Samus to hold down the fire button to charge her Power Beam, releasing a more powerful shot that deals increased damage and can penetrate some enemy defenses.
- Location: Found in Brinstar, usually after defeating the first major boss, Kraid. It's often in a room that requires a bit of exploration to uncover.
- Strategy: The Charge Beam is vital for dealing with tougher enemies and bosses. Practice charging and releasing shots for maximum efficiency. It also allows for "Shinespark" setups later in the game when combined with the Speed Booster.
- Specific Location: After defeating Kraid in Brinstar, proceed through the newly opened path. The Charge Beam is in a room shortly after Kraid's lair, often accessible by a short vertical shaft.
- Ice Beam
- Description: Replaces the Power Beam's normal shot with an ice-based projectile that can freeze most enemies solid. Frozen enemies can then be used as platforms to reach higher areas or block projectiles.
- Location: Acquired in Norfair, typically found after navigating through the hot, lava-filled caverns. It's often guarded by a mini-boss or requires careful platforming over lava.
- Strategy: Freezing enemies is key for solving many environmental puzzles and reaching high ledges. Some enemies are vulnerable to ice, while others are resistant (e.g., fire-based enemies). It's also crucial for defeating certain bosses.
- Specific Location: Deep within Norfair, past the first few lava pits. You'll often find it in a room that requires you to navigate a series of platforms over a large lava pool.
- Wave Beam
- Description: Allows Samus's beam shots to pass through walls and obstacles, hitting enemies on the other side. This is incredibly useful for clearing rooms and hitting otherwise protected targets.
- Location: Found in Ridley's Lair, usually after defeating Ridley. It's often in a hidden room or requires a specific sequence of actions to reveal.
- Strategy: The Wave Beam is excellent for clearing rooms quickly and hitting enemies that are otherwise protected. Combine it with the Charge Beam for devastating charged shots that pierce through terrain and multiple enemies.
- Specific Location: After defeating Ridley, proceed through the path that opens. The Wave Beam is typically found in a room accessible shortly after, often requiring a Morph Ball tunnel or a hidden passage.
- Plasma Beam
- Description: The most powerful beam upgrade, allowing shots to pierce through multiple enemies and deal massive damage. This beam is essential for the endgame.
- Location: Acquired in Tourian, typically found late in the game, often after defeating Ridley and before facing Mother Brain.
- Strategy: This is your ultimate weapon. Use it to tear through the final enemies and bosses with ease. It's crucial for efficiently dispatching the Metroids in Tourian and dealing significant damage to Mother Brain.
- Specific Location: In the depths of Tourian, after navigating through the Metroid-infested corridors. It's usually in a dedicated item room just before the final boss chamber.
- Screw Attack
- Description: While performing a Space Jump, Samus becomes temporarily invulnerable and damages any enemies she comes into contact with. It also destroys certain blocks (Screw Attack Blocks) and some projectiles.
- Location: Found in Tourian, usually after defeating Ridley. It's often in a room that requires advanced platforming or bomb usage to reach.
- Strategy: The Screw Attack makes navigating enemy-filled areas trivial. Use it to clear paths and conserve health. It's also required to break specific Screw Attack blocks, often revealing hidden paths or items. Combine it with Space Jump for ultimate offensive and defensive mobility.
- Specific Location: In Tourian, after acquiring the Plasma Beam, you'll typically find the Screw Attack in a room that requires you to Space Jump through a series of obstacles or break a hidden block.
- Varia Suit
- Description: Reduces damage taken from enemies and environmental hazards (like superheated rooms in Norfair and lava). It changes Samus's suit color to orange.
- Location: Acquired in Norfair, usually after defeating Kraid. It's often in a large, central chamber or a key progression room.
- Strategy: The Varia Suit is essential for surviving the harsh environments of Norfair and later areas. Without it, you'll take constant damage in hot rooms, making progression difficult or impossible. Prioritize obtaining this as soon as Norfair becomes accessible.
- Specific Location: In a large, open room in the upper-mid section of Norfair, often requiring you to navigate around lava pools.
- Gravity Suit
- Description: Allows Samus to move freely and jump normally underwater, completely negating the movement penalty. It also provides further damage reduction beyond the Varia Suit and changes Samus's suit color to purple.
- Location: Found in Ridley's Lair, typically after defeating Ridley. It's often in a room that requires a combination of other abilities to access.
- Strategy: The Gravity Suit makes underwater sections much easier to navigate and opens up new paths in submerged areas that were previously too difficult to traverse. It's crucial for 100% completion and accessing certain late-game areas.
- Specific Location: After defeating Ridley, explore the deeper, water-filled sections of Ridley's Lair. The Gravity Suit is usually in a large, submerged chamber.
- Hi-Jump Boots
- Description: Increases Samus's jump height, allowing her to reach higher ledges and clear larger gaps. This is a crucial early-game movement upgrade.
- Location: Found in Brinstar, often in a room that requires some basic platforming or bomb usage to access.
- Strategy: This is a crucial early-game upgrade that significantly expands your exploration options. Look for areas you couldn't quite reach before. It's often required to progress through vertical shafts.
- Specific Location: In a vertical shaft in Brinstar, typically after acquiring the Morph Ball and Bombs. You'll need to use Bombs to clear a path to it.
- Space Jump
- Description: Allows Samus to continuously jump in mid-air, effectively granting unlimited flight as long as the jump button is timed correctly.
- Location: Acquired in Norfair, usually after obtaining the Varia Suit and navigating deeper into the region. It's often in a room that requires careful platforming over lava.
- Strategy: The Space Jump is one of the most powerful movement upgrades, opening up vast new areas and making traversal much easier. Combine it with the Screw Attack for ultimate mobility and defense. Mastering Space Jump timing is essential for advanced movement.
- Specific Location: Deep within Norfair, in a large, open vertical shaft filled with lava. You'll need the Varia Suit to survive the heat.
- Speed Booster
- Description: Allows Samus to run at incredibly high speeds, breaking through Speed Booster blocks and damaging enemies in her path. Activating it requires a long, unobstructed path.
- Location: Found in Crateria, often after defeating Kraid and gaining access to new areas. It's usually in a room that requires a long, unobstructed path to activate.
- Strategy: The Speed Booster is essential for breaking specific blocks and performing "Shinespark" maneuvers (charging the Speed Booster, then pressing down to store the charge and release it in any direction to burst through obstacles). Mastering Shinespark is key for 100% completion and accessing many hidden areas.
- Specific Location: In a long, horizontal corridor in Crateria, typically after you've gained access to the lower sections of the region.
Energy & Ammunition Upgrades
- Energy Tank
- Description: Increases Samus's maximum health by 100 units. There are 12 Energy Tanks in total, bringing your maximum health to 1300 (100 initial + 12 * 100).
- Location: Scattered throughout Zebes. Each region typically has multiple Energy Tanks. They are often hidden behind destructible blocks, in secret passages, or require specific abilities to reach.
- Strategy: Always prioritize collecting Energy Tanks. More health means more survivability, especially against bosses and environmental hazards. If you see a suspicious block or an unreachable ledge, an Energy Tank might be nearby.
- Notable Locations (Early Game Examples):
