Post-Game Content & Completion

So you've defeated the Mother Brain and escaped Zebes, but your adventure isn't truly over! Metroid: Zero Mission offers a robust post-game experience for completionists and speedrunners alike. This section will guide you through achieving 100% item collection, unlocking secret endings, and tackling harder difficulties.

100% Item Collection

Achieving 100% item completion means finding every single Energy Tank, Missile Tank, Super Missile Tank, and Power Bomb Tank hidden across Zebes. While some are straightforward, many require advanced techniques or keen observation. The in-game map is your best friend here; any room with a red outline indicates an uncollected item. Pay close attention to areas that seem inaccessible or have suspicious blocks.

Key Areas for Hidden Items:

  • Crateria: Check the initial landing site thoroughly. There are often hidden passages requiring Bomb or Missile use. The area near the Mother Brain's lair also holds several Power Bomb expansions.
  • Brinstar: Many Missile Tanks are concealed behind fake blocks or in small alcoves accessible only by Morph Ball. The "Kraid's Lair" section of Brinstar is particularly dense with hidden items.
  • Norfair: This fiery region is notorious for requiring precise Wall Jumps or Bomb Jumps to reach elevated platforms or passages. Look for breakable blocks in ceilings and floors. The Lava Caves and Ridley's Lair areas are prime spots for these.
  • Kraid's Lair: Beyond the boss, explore every nook and cranny. Many items here are behind destructible blocks that blend into the background.
  • Ridley's Lair: Similar to Kraid's, this area has numerous hidden passages. Use your Power Bombs liberally to reveal secret routes, especially in the vertical shafts.
  • Tourian: While primarily a linear path to Mother Brain, there are a few Missile Tanks tucked away in the corners, often requiring a quick Wall Jump or careful Bomb placement.
  • Chutes & Shafts: Don't forget the long vertical shafts connecting different areas. Often, there are small ledges or hidden passages requiring a well-timed Space Jump or Screw Attack.

Strategies for Item Hunting:

  • Scan Every Wall: Use your regular beam to shoot every suspicious-looking block. Many hidden passages are revealed this way.
  • Bomb Everything: When in doubt, drop a Bomb. This is especially effective for revealing Morph Ball tunnels or breakable floor/ceiling blocks.
  • Power Bomb Usage: Power Bombs are excellent for clearing large areas of breakable blocks, often revealing multiple hidden paths or items at once. Use them in rooms that feel "empty" or have odd layouts.
  • Map Completion: Ensure every single square on your map is filled in. If a room has a red outline, there's an item there. If it's blue, you've collected everything in that room.
  • High Jump/Space Jump: Revisit areas with these abilities. Many items are located on high ledges that were previously unreachable.
  • Screw Attack: This ability allows you to effortlessly destroy many types of blocks, making item hunting much faster in certain areas.

Unlocking Secret Endings

Metroid: Zero Mission features multiple endings based on your completion time and item collection percentage. To view all of them, you'll need to play through the game multiple times under different conditions.

Ending Requirements:

  • Standard Ending: Complete the game on any difficulty with any item percentage and time. This is the most common ending.
  • Good Ending (Fast Time): Complete the game in under 2 hours (on Normal or Hard difficulty) with any item percentage.
  • Good Ending (High Item %): Complete the game with 100% item collection (on Normal or Hard difficulty) with any time.
  • Best Ending (Speedrun & 100%): This is the most challenging. Complete the game in under 2 hours AND achieve 100% item collection on Normal or Hard difficulty. This ending often features Samus in her Zero Suit.
  • Hard Mode Endings: Playing on Hard difficulty also influences the ending images, often showing more detailed or different poses for Samus. Achieving the "Best Ending" on Hard mode is the ultimate challenge.

Tip: To achieve the faster times, focus on minimizing backtracking and mastering boss fights. Skip optional items that aren't critical for progression, or save 100% runs for a separate playthrough.

Hard Mode and Beyond

Once you've completed the game on Normal, Hard mode becomes available. This isn't just a simple stat boost for enemies; Hard mode introduces:

  • Increased Enemy Damage: Enemies hit much harder, making careful evasion and quick kills essential.
  • Reduced Item Drops: Energy and Missile drops from enemies are less frequent, forcing you to manage your resources more carefully.
  • More Challenging Bosses: Bosses have more health and often faster attack patterns.

Mastering Hard mode is crucial for unlocking the most prestigious endings and truly testing your skills. Consider practicing specific boss fights or challenging sections on Normal mode before attempting them on Hard.

Unlockable Content:

  • Image Gallery: By achieving various endings and completion percentages, you'll unlock images in the game's gallery, showcasing Samus in different outfits and poses. Aim for 100% item collection on Hard mode for the most complete gallery.
  • Original Metroid (NES): Completing Metroid: Zero Mission on any difficulty unlocks the original NES Metroid game, accessible from the main menu. This is a fantastic bonus for fans of the series and a great way to see the roots of Samus's first adventure.

Good luck, bounty hunter! Zebes still holds many secrets for those dedicated enough to uncover them.
