The Final Confrontation: Mother Brain
Congratulations, Space Hunter! You've reached the climactic battle against the parasitic Mother Brain. This fight is a multi-stage encounter that will test your mastery of Samus's abilities. Ensure you have full Energy Tanks and a healthy supply of Missiles before entering Tourian.
Phase 1: Rinkas and Turrets
- Objective: Destroy the four turrets guarding Mother Brain.
- Strategy:
- Upon entering Mother Brain's chamber, you'll be assaulted by a barrage of Rinkas (flying rings) and laser fire from the turrets.
- Prioritize destroying the turrets. Each turret requires 5 Missiles or sustained Beam fire.
- Use your Screw Attack if you have it to clear out Rinkas quickly and safely. Otherwise, dodge their projectiles while focusing on the turrets.
- Be mindful of the acid pit below; falling in will inflict significant damage.
Phase 2: Mother Brain's Brain
- Objective: Destroy Mother Brain's protective glass and then her brain.
- Strategy:
- Once the turrets are down, Mother Brain's protective glass casing will be exposed.
- Fire Missiles directly at the glass. It will shatter after several hits.
- After the glass breaks, Mother Brain's brain will be vulnerable. Continue to unleash a volley of Missiles into her brain.
- Mother Brain will retaliate with a powerful laser beam. This beam can be devastating, so constantly move and jump to avoid it.
- If you run low on Missiles, switch to your most powerful Beam weapon, but Missiles are significantly more effective.
The Escape Sequence
Once Mother Brain is defeated, a self-destruct sequence will initiate! You have a limited time to escape Planet Zebes.
- Timer: A countdown timer will appear on screen. Do not waste a single second.
- Route: You must retrace your steps through Tourian and into Brinstar, then make your way to your Gunship.
- Obstacles:
- The path will be filled with collapsing blocks and new enemy placements.
- Use your Morph Ball and Bomb abilities to quickly navigate tight passages and destroy obstacles.
- The Speed Booster (if acquired) is invaluable here for traversing long horizontal sections quickly. Activate it and shine-spark through any barriers.
- Be prepared for unexpected enemy encounters. Don't stop to fight unless absolutely necessary; focus on evasion.
- The most critical section is often the vertical shaft leading out of Tourian. Master your wall jumps and Space Jump to ascend rapidly.
- Goal: Reach your Gunship in the Crateria Landing Site before the timer hits zero. Successfully boarding your ship will trigger the ending cutscene.
Post-Game Content and Endings
Unlike some later Metroid titles, the original Metroid on NES does not feature extensive post-game content or New Game+ modes. However, it does offer multiple endings based on your completion time.
Ending Variations
The ending cutscene you receive is determined by how quickly you complete the game. There are generally three main variations:
- Slowest Completion Time (e.g., 5+ hours): Samus will remove her helmet, revealing her as a woman, but she will remain in her Power Suit.
- Medium Completion Time (e.g., 3-5 hours): Samus will remove her helmet and her Power Suit, revealing her in a more casual outfit (often a leotard or bikini, depending on the version).
- Fastest Completion Time (e.g., under 3 hours): Samus will remove her helmet and her Power Suit, appearing in a very minimal outfit, often striking a pose. This is generally considered the "best" ending.
To achieve the faster endings, focus on:
- Minimizing backtracking: Plan your route efficiently.
- Skipping optional upgrades: Only collect essential items like Energy Tanks and Missile Expansions that aid in boss fights or progression.
- Mastering movement: Utilize techniques like the Space Jump and Screw Attack to traverse areas quickly and avoid combat.
- Efficient boss strategies: Learn the fastest ways to defeat Kraid, Ridley, and Mother Brain.
Self-Imposed Challenges
For players looking to extend their experience beyond the main game, consider these self-imposed challenges:
- 100% Item Completion: Find every single Missile Tank, Energy Tank, and upgrade in the game. This requires meticulous exploration of every hidden passage and destructible block.
- Low% Run: Complete the game with the absolute minimum number of upgrades possible. This often involves skipping many Energy Tanks and Missile Expansions, making boss fights significantly harder.
- Any% Speedrun: Focus solely on completing the game as fast as possible, regardless of item collection. This is where the fastest endings are achieved.
- No Damage Run: Attempt to complete the entire game without taking any damage. This is an extremely difficult challenge requiring perfect enemy knowledge and movement.
Replaying Metroid with these challenges in mind offers a fresh perspective and deepens your understanding of the game's mechanics and level design. Good luck, Space Hunter!
