Early Game Strategies
Welcome, bounty hunter! The early hours of your mission on Zebes are crucial for building a solid foundation. This section will guide you through the initial areas, ensuring you acquire essential upgrades and understand fundamental mechanics to survive the planet's hostile environments.
Crateria: The Surface Descent
Your adventure begins on the surface of Crateria. Your primary goal here is to familiarize yourself with basic movement and combat while making your way to the deeper regions of Zebes.
- Initial Descent: From your landing site, head left. You'll encounter your first enemies, the lowly Zoomer. Practice your beam shots and jumping.
- First Door: Continue left until you reach a blue door. These doors open with a single beam shot. Proceed through.
- Energy Tank #1: In the next room, you'll find your very first Energy Tank. Collect it immediately; this significantly increases your maximum health and is vital for early survival.
- Missile Tank #1: After grabbing the Energy Tank, drop down and head right. You'll find a small alcove containing a Missile Tank. This expands your missile capacity, which will be crucial for opening red doors and defeating stronger enemies.
- Entering Brinstar: Continue your descent, navigating through a series of vertical shafts and horizontal corridors. You'll eventually reach a long vertical shaft leading downwards. This is your gateway to Brinstar.
Brinstar: First Forays and Power-Ups
Brinstar is a sprawling, organic region that will test your platforming skills and introduce you to new enemy types. Focus on securing the critical upgrades found here.
Bomb Acquisition
Your first major objective in Brinstar is to obtain the Bombs. This ability is non-negotiable for progression, as it allows you to destroy certain blocks and access new paths.
- Path to Bombs: From the entrance to Brinstar, head right and drop down. Navigate through the winding passages, dealing with enemies like Skree and Geega. You'll eventually reach a room with a statue.
- Statue Room: The statue holds the Bombs. Approach it and collect the item.
- Using Bombs: Immediately after acquiring them, practice using Bombs by laying them in Morph Ball form. You'll notice certain blocks in the room can now be destroyed, revealing new pathways.
Morph Ball and Missile Expansion
With Bombs in hand, you can now access previously unreachable areas and further expand your arsenal.
- Morph Ball: While not an item you "collect" in the traditional sense, the ability to transform into the Morph Ball is granted alongside the Bombs. Remember to press down twice to activate it.
- Missile Tank #2: After getting the Bombs, use them to destroy the blocks directly beneath the statue. Drop down and proceed. You'll find another Missile Tank in a small hidden passage. Always be on the lookout for suspicious blocks!
- Navigating with Bombs: Use your new Bomb ability to clear paths and uncover hidden passages. Many early game secrets and shortcuts rely on Bomb usage.
General Early Game Tips
- Energy Management: Always prioritize collecting energy drops from defeated enemies. If you're low on health, consider farming a few enemies in a safe room before proceeding.
- Missile Conservation: While it's tempting to use missiles on every enemy, save them for red doors and tougher foes. Your initial missile count is limited.
- Explore Thoroughly: The original Metroid is famous for its hidden passages. If a path seems blocked, try bombing walls, floors, and ceilings. Many early Missile Tanks and even Energy Tanks are tucked away in unassuming spots.
- Map Awareness: While there isn't an in-game map in the traditional sense, try to mentally map out the areas you've visited. Understanding the layout will save you time and frustration.
- Practice Wall Jumping (Advanced): While not strictly necessary for early progression, mastering wall jumping can open up new sequence breaks and shortcuts. It's a challenging technique but worth practicing for speedrunners and advanced players.
