Damage Calculation
Understanding how damage is calculated in Metroid is crucial for survival, especially in later areas of Zebes. While the exact numerical values can vary slightly between enemy types and attacks, the core principles remain consistent. Mastering these mechanics will allow you to prioritize upgrades and strategize more effectively against the Space Pirates and their monstrous creations.
Base Damage & Samus's Health
- Samus's Base Health: Samus starts with 30 units of health. Each Energy Tank you collect increases your maximum health by 100 units.
- Enemy Attacks: Most enemy attacks deal a base amount of damage. For instance, a simple contact with a Zoomer in Brinstar might deal 5 damage, while a projectile from a Ridley in Tourian could deal significantly more.
- Damage Display: Samus's health bar is divided into segments. Each segment represents 30 health points. When you take damage, you'll see these segments deplete.
Damage Reduction & Mitigation
There are several ways to reduce the damage Samus takes, making exploration and boss battles much more manageable:
- Varia Suit: This is your primary defense upgrade. Located in a hidden chamber in Norfair (accessible after acquiring the Morph Ball and Bombs to break through blocks, then navigating a series of lava pits), the Varia Suit halves all incoming damage. This is an absolutely essential item for progressing beyond Brinstar and Kraid's Lair. Without it, areas like Norfair and Tourian become incredibly punishing.
- Screw Attack: While primarily an offensive upgrade, the Screw Attack (found in a secret passage in Norfair, requiring the Hi-Jump Boots to reach) also grants temporary invincibility frames while active. When Samus is spinning with the Screw Attack, she takes no damage from most enemies she comes into contact with. This is invaluable for clearing rooms quickly and safely.
- Energy Tanks: While not a damage reduction, collecting Energy Tanks directly increases your health pool, allowing you to absorb more hits before being defeated. There are a total of 8 Energy Tanks scattered throughout Zebes. Prioritize finding these, especially the one in Brinstar near the first Missile Tank, and the one in Kraid's Lair.
Environmental Hazards
Beyond enemy attacks, environmental hazards also contribute to damage. These are typically unaffected by the Varia Suit:
- Lava: Found predominantly in Norfair, stepping into lava deals continuous, rapid damage. The Varia Suit does NOT protect against lava damage. Avoid it at all costs.
- Acid: Similar to lava, acid pools (often found in Ridley's Lair) inflict constant damage. Again, the Varia Suit offers no protection.
- Spikes/Thorns: Contact with these stationary hazards, found in various areas, will deal a fixed amount of damage. The Varia Suit typically offers no defense here either.
Strategic Application
Knowing these damage mechanics allows for better strategic play:
- Early Game Survival: Focus on acquiring the first few Energy Tanks in Brinstar and Kraid's Lair. This buffer will be crucial for learning enemy patterns.
- Norfair Priority: Make a beeline for the Varia Suit in Norfair as soon as you have the necessary upgrades (Morph Ball, Bombs, and ideally Hi-Jump Boots). The damage reduction it provides is game-changing.
- Boss Fights: For bosses like Kraid and Ridley, the Varia Suit is practically mandatory. Even with it, learn their attack patterns to minimize damage taken. Consider using the Screw Attack strategically during Ridley's fight if you can maintain contact.
- Resource Management: Always be mindful of your current health and available Energy Tanks. If you're low on health, seek out a save point or a room with easily farmable enemies for health drops before proceeding into dangerous territory.
