Zebes Overview
Welcome to Planet Zebes, a labyrinthine world teeming with hostile lifeforms and hidden secrets. As Samus Aran, your mission is to infiltrate the Space Pirate stronghold, defeat Mother Brain, and eradicate the Metroid threat. This section will guide you through the initial areas of the original NES Metroid, helping you acquire essential upgrades and navigate the treacherous environments. Remember, exploration is key, but so is survival!
Landing on Planet Zebes: Brinstar Entry
Unlike later installments, the original Metroid for the NES begins directly within the subterranean caverns of Brinstar. Upon landing, your immediate goal is to acquire fundamental abilities to progress. The landing site itself is relatively safe, but dangers lurk just beyond. Follow these steps:
- Exit your Gunship: From your starting position, head left. You'll find yourself in a vertical shaft.
- Descend into Brinstar: Drop down this initial vertical shaft. Be wary of the small, hopping enemies (Zoomers) that cling to walls and floors.
- Navigate the initial cavern: Continue moving left through the first few screens. You'll encounter more Zoomers and possibly some flying Mellows. Eliminate them to avoid unnecessary damage.
- Locate the Morph Ball: Your first critical upgrade, the Morph Ball, is found very early in Brinstar.
- Continue left until you reach a large, open room with a distinctive circular pedestal in the center.
- The Morph Ball upgrade rests upon this pedestal. Collect it immediately.
- Action: Press Down on the D-Pad to transform into a ball. This allows Samus to roll into tight spaces.
- Practice and progress with Morph Ball: Immediately after acquiring the Morph Ball, use it to navigate through the small tunnels located within the same room. This will open up new pathways and allow you to proceed further into Brinstar.
Brinstar: The Initial Caverns
Brinstar is a vibrant, organic region characterized by its reddish-brown rock formations and diverse alien fauna. It's here you'll find crucial movement and offensive upgrades that are essential for deeper exploration.
Acquiring Bombs
Once you have the Morph Ball, the Bomb upgrade becomes accessible, further expanding your traversal and combat options. Bombs are crucial for destroying specific blocks and damaging enemies.
- From the Morph Ball chamber: After acquiring and practicing with the Morph Ball, exit the room to the left.
- Navigate the subsequent rooms: You'll move through a few more screens. Keep an eye out for enemies like the Rippers (invincible, flying creatures) and Skrees (diving bats).
- Locate the Bomb chamber: You will eventually reach another distinct chamber. Look for a suspicious-looking block on the floor.
- Use Morph Ball and Bombs: Transform into the Morph Ball and lay a bomb (press the 'B' button). The bomb will destroy the block, revealing a hidden passage.
- Collect the Bombs: Follow this passage to find the Bomb upgrade. This allows you to lay bombs while in Morph Ball form.
Finding Your First Missile Tank
Missiles are powerful secondary weapons essential for defeating bosses and opening specific Missile Blocks. Increasing your missile capacity is a high priority.
- From the Bomb chamber: After collecting Bombs, backtrack slightly or continue exploring the immediate vicinity of Brinstar.
- Search for destructible blocks: With Bombs, you can now destroy light-colored blocks that previously blocked your path. Explore thoroughly, laying bombs on suspicious floor or wall sections.
- Locate a hidden alcove: In one of the early Brinstar screens, often in a vertical shaft or a room with multiple platforms, look for a small alcove above you or a seemingly dead-end path. Use bombs to reveal a hidden passage.
- Collect the Missile Tank: Navigate through the newly opened path to find your first Missile Tank. This will increase your missile capacity by 5.
Initial Brinstar Exploration and Progression
With the Morph Ball, Bombs, and your first Missile Tank, you are now equipped to explore more deeply into Zebes. Your next goals in Brinstar typically involve finding the Long Beam and eventually making your way towards Norfair.
- Long Beam: This crucial upgrade extends the range of Samus's beam weapon, making combat significantly easier. It is typically found in the central-to-lower sections of Brinstar, often requiring the use of bombs to access. Look for a room with a series of platforms and a hidden path leading to it.
- Energy Tanks: Keep an eye out for Energy Tanks, which increase your maximum health. The first few are often found in Brinstar, sometimes behind bombable blocks or in slightly out-of-the-way alcoves.
- Navigating to Norfair: Brinstar connects to several other regions. The path to Norfair, the fiery volcanic region, is usually found in the lower-right sections of Brinstar. You'll typically need to navigate through a series of vertical shafts and horizontal corridors, using your new abilities to clear obstacles.
Common Pitfalls & Tips for Early Brinstar:
- Bomb Everything: If you're stuck or suspect a hidden path, lay bombs on every block in the vicinity. Many secrets are hidden behind destructible blocks.
- Map Awareness: The NES Metroid does not have an in-game map. Consider drawing your own or using an online resource to keep track of explored areas and potential secrets.
- Grinding for Health/Missiles: Don't be afraid to backtrack to areas with easily defeated enemies to farm for health (small energy orbs) and missiles (small missile pickups) if you're low.
- Rippers are Invincible: The small, flying creatures called Rippers cannot be harmed by your weapons. Avoid them or use their predictable patterns to navigate past them.
- Save Stations: Remember to use the glowing orb save stations (found in specific rooms) to record your progress. Dying without saving means losing all progress since your last save.
With these initial upgrades and strategies, you are well on your way to conquering the challenges of Planet Zebes. Good luck, Samus!
