Neutral Mobs

Understand Minecraft's neutral mobs. Learn which mobs like spiders, endermen, and wolves attack when provoked and what valuable items they drop.

Neutral Mobs

Neutral mobs in Minecraft are creatures that will not attack players unless provoked. This means they can coexist peacefully in your world, but if you choose to attack them or get too close under certain circumstances, they will retaliate. Understanding their behavior is key to safely interacting with them and utilizing their drops.

Neutral mobs offer a balance between passive mobs, which never attack, and hostile mobs, which are always aggressive. They can be found in various biomes and situations, and their aggression is triggered by specific player actions. This makes them interesting to encounter, as you can choose whether to engage them or leave them be.

Here are some of the most common neutral mobs in Minecraft:

  • Spiders: Spiders are neutral during the day but become hostile at night or in dark areas. If you attack a spider, it will become hostile regardless of the time of day. They drop String and sometimes Spider Eyes.
  • Cave Spiders: These smaller, venomous spiders are always hostile and are typically found in abandoned mineshafts. They inflict poison damage. They drop String and Spider Eyes.
  • Endermen: These tall, dark creatures are neutral unless you look directly at their head or attack them. When provoked, they teleport erratically and attack with their bare hands. They drop Ender Pearls, which are essential for teleportation and brewing. They are found in the Overworld, Nether, and The End.
  • Dolphins: Found in ocean biomes, dolphins are friendly and will even help players by leading them to shipwrecks or ocean ruins if given a Raw Cod or Salmon. They become hostile if attacked.
  • Iron Golems: These large, powerful protectors spawn naturally in villages or can be built by players using Iron Blocks and a Carved Pumpkin. They are neutral unless a player attacks them or attacks a villager in their presence. They drop Iron Ingots and sometimes Poppies.
  • Wolves: Found in forests and taiga biomes, wolves are neutral until attacked. If you attack a wolf, its pack mates will also become hostile. However, if you tame a wolf by feeding it Bones, it becomes a loyal pet that will fight alongside you and will not attack you. Tamed wolves drop nothing upon death.
  • Bee: Bees are neutral unless their nest or beehive is disturbed or attacked. If provoked, they will swarm and sting the player, inflicting poison damage. They drop Honeycomb and Honey Bottles.
  • Panda: Pandas spawn in Jungles and have varying personalities (lazy, aggressive, etc.). They are generally neutral but can become aggressive if attacked. They drop Bamboo.
  • Goats: As discussed in a previous section, goats are neutral but will ram players if provoked or approached too closely. They drop Buckets of Goat Horn.
  • Zombified Piglins: Found in the Nether, these are the zombie-like versions of Piglins. They are neutral unless attacked or if a player attacks one of their brethren. If provoked, they will attack in large numbers. They drop Gold Ingots, Rotten Flesh, and Golden Carrots.

Interacting with neutral mobs can be beneficial. For example, taming wolves provides a powerful ally, and harvesting from bee nests can yield honey and honeycomb. Endermen are a crucial source of Ender Pearls for late-game progression.

Neutral Mob Behavior and Drops
